THERE were three industrial structures that dominated Irishtown, largely because they were physically so prominent, on this relatively flat area which had been denuded of trees in the early 1850s. Towering above the tents, huts, simple slab structures and small weatherboard cottages was the Bendigo Gas Company Works with its very tall octagonal brick chimney. The gasworks could be spotted kilometres away from up the valley of the Bendigo Creek and Bendigo Flat. Even the retort building of the gas works, very different from what is on the site today, was considered at the time to be a large structure, it too having been built of brick. There were, in the late 1850s, very few brick buildings to be found in Irishtown. The gasworks was to have a number of rebuilds and expansions during the time the site was used. Irishtown residents slowly incorporated chimneys built of brick for their homes if they could be afforded, otherwise simple stone fire places or self-made mud bricks had to suffice. Even the hotels and

JAMES LERK stores of Irishtown were not elaborate in their construction, but they served this poor community well. The bakers of Irishtown had their brick ovens, but the bakeries themselves were of weatherboard. It was not until the turn of the 20th century that bakers built their whole business and manufacturing buildings entirely of brick. The second indus-

trial site was that of the Tyson’s Reef Mine, which was located on the north side of Thunder Street, between Bakewell and Caledonia streets. This mine was one of the early ones to have a steam-powered plant, culminating in a 22.2-metretall round brick chimney from the boiler house. There were two boilers each 5.48 metres in length, a 39.6 metre flue from the boiler house ran up the hill where the chimney was located, giving it a good foundation. According to JN

Macartney, mining corespondent, the quartz of Tyson’s Reef was first worked in 1855, and great results were obtained from it. So much so that investors were keen to develop its gold resources at depth and they invested in steam machinery made by McLennan and Co of Glasgow. Joseph Butler, the engineer in charge of the construction, was justly proud of the plant erected in April and May 1859. The Tyson’s Reef Mine worked, off and on, right

into the 20th century. Some of the financiers behind the project were Messrs England, Snowdon, Rutherford, Story, Holmes, Robinson, Myers and English. There were other less significant mines in Irishtown, but alluvial activity continued right into the 1890s. As there was still alluvial activity in the area it meant that the street gutters were not shallow as they are today, but deep open channels. The crossing for the channel opposite the gas works outside Mr C Walter’s shop, was the cause of complaint in 1890, by Joseph Vance. Vance let the council know that a portion of the timber had been torn away, making it dangerous for pedestrians in daylight or dark. The third dominant building complex in Irishtown was that of Andrew Thunder’s Brewery, located in the area bounded by Lucan and Harney streets. A portion of the sandstone wall of this onceimpressive structure can still be seen on the footpath fence line in Harney Street. Thunder was the first to introduce ice making into the brewery process in the Australian colonies.
