A MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR & BOARD OF TRUSTEES PRESIDENT FRIENDS & SUPPORTERS, On behalf of the 5,400 Club members of Boys & Girls Club of Clifton in 2019, we are pleased to share our latest Annual Report. Each and every one of you were an important part of BGC Clifton’s work last year. The programs, events, and Club member success stories, highlighted within are the results of your time, passion, and resources. We hope you are as proud of our impact as we are. Behind each of these highlights is a child with potential who simply needed to be given an opportunity to shine. It’s the teen who came to a Club to play basketball and found a love of robotics. It’s the second graders who lost confidence when they couldn’t read as well as their friends but have now surpassed reading levels for their grade. You are receiving this Annual Report because you were an instrumental part of our Club members’ successes in 2019. Thank you for making Great Futures possible!

As our 2020 Strategic Plan comes to a close, we know that our work has only begun. In alignment with our national organization, we are beginning to develop Great Futures 2025 to meet the needs of our youth today. We will be looking at new organizational models and partnerships that will allow us to expand and serve additional communities. We will be focusing on hiring and retaining the best staff and delivering the most impactful programming to give our kids their best chance at reaching their full potential. As we work to finalize our 2025 plan, we will share with you and our other top stakeholders to get your thoughts and input.

Great Futures Start Here…

For our kids to have great futures, they must do well in school. We work to ensure academic success for all of our children by making sure they graduate from high school, with a solid plan for their future. In 2019, we served 400 youth members in before school childcare programs starting @ 7:00 A.M. servicing all 17 elementary schools. We also served 1,429 youth members in after school childcare programs in 12 Clifton schools and at our Club facility; providing mentoring, tutoring, homework help and recreational activities. In addition, we implemented a BGCA ‘Summer Brain Gain” program designed to prevent summer learning loss in our 8-week summer day camp program.

Boys & Girls Club of Clifton has been a bedrock institution in our community since 1947. Our core principles are a guiding light for our city, state, and nation, demonstrating every day how children and teens should be heard, valued, loved and understood. What we achieve as an organization is made possible by the many critical partners and donors with whom we work — individuals, corporations, foundations, city/state/federal governments, and other nonprofits.

Together, the challenges are made a bit easier and the successes for kids much sweeter. Thank you for your trust, support, and partnership.

Every day is truly an adventure in the life of a child. As our BGCA tagline suggests “Great Futures Start Here…” for youth members through our program services and your continued generosity. AT A GLANCE

The Boys & Girls Club of Clifton is an organization that provides Clifton’s and Woodland Park’s youth with quality out-of-school programming. The organization consists of the main Club facility, located at 181 Colfax Avenue, and 15 School extension sites (Clifton Schools 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, Woodland Park’s Charles Olbon, Beatrice Gilmore, and Memorial Middle). Operating 308 days out of the year, Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. until 6 p.m., we provide day care services for children of all ages ranging from 2½ years through their teens. In addition to the child day care services, we provide many other services including educational, sports & recreation, leadership, and character development programs.

CORE PROGRAMS Kinderkare

Kinderkare is our quality afterschool program that provides transportation from school to our facility. Multiple hands-on interactive activities are provided daily to reinforce what is learned in kindergarten. The Kinderkare program includes art, reading readiness, computer skills, smart board interaction, educational and recreational games. Our summer program activities include weekly field trips, gym, swim and outdoor play.

Camp Clifton

Camp Clifton is an 8 week interactive camp for members ages 6 – 15. Parents have the opportunity to have their camper participate on a weekly basis or for the entire summer. Campers are grouped according to age with a ratio of 1:15. Campers enjoy various activities throughout the day in a fun setting surrounded by friends.

After School Program

Our year-round daycare center provides care for 2 ½ -4 year olds.

Our safe and loving environment has been in service nearly 40 years.

Our center-based classrooms offer a variety of hands-on activities including science, technology, art, reading readiness, cooking, swimming and yoga. We provide our children with a fun and nurturing atmosphere which helps them learn. In addition, weekly field trips are offered during our 8 week summer program.

The Boys & Girls Club of Clifton has partnered with The Clifton & Woodland Park School Districts to provide before and after care programs. Entering our doors our members experience a safe haven, a place to learn and grow, an opportunity to build lifelong friendships, developing of trusting and caring relationship with staff in a fun, supervised and educational environment.

Minds in Motion

A Federally Funded afterschool program that services grades 3, 4 & 5 at Clifton Public School # 4, #12 and # 17 is an enrichment program based on a STEAM theme: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math with Fine Arts. Classes include: Public Speaking, Coding, Crime Scene Investigation, Step, Yoga, Instruments, Astronomy, Fresh Water, Solar Energy, and Science in Art, Cartooning, Technology, Science Spectacular, Math Fun, and Chorus.

Our program also provide free snacks and hot dinner daily, community service, character building, citizenship, trips, and recreational activities.

CORE PROGRAMS Teen Programs

Our teen center is designed to give teens a place and space to call their own.

The teen program provides pre-teens and teens ages 11 to 17 to flourish in an environment where they are safe and supervised by dedicated and committed staff. Our educational and fun programs promote healthy choices and lifestyles, special activities such as teen nights, parties, trips, college tours and building dreams and setting goals of achievements they can be proud of.

Sports Program

Our well rounded sports program fosters, encourages and provide kids an avenue to build confidence, good sportsmanship, teamwork, and skill development. All while in a fun, interacting learning environment while forming friendships and positive relationships with staff and lifelong friends. Our sports program includes; yoga, basketball, indoor soccer, sport clinics, karate, volleyball, swimming and dance.

Educational Programs

From September through August, the Club offers evidence-based, education programs that closely align with the developmental needs of young people. We offer programming in the following education and career areas: Project Learn reinforces and enhances the skills and knowledge young people learn at school during the after school hours at the Club. Power Hour-helps members ages 6-18 achieve academic success by providing homework help, tutoring, and high-yield learning activities. My.Future is BGCA’s mobile-friendly social platform with access to over 125 Boys & Girls Club program activities in areas such as STEM, leadership and the arts. With My.Future, kids and teens can learn new skills, connect with their friends, and earn recognition and rewards in a safe and fun online environment. STEM programming includes Waterbotics, Lego Mindstorms, “Explore It,” “Design It” and STEM Mentoring- activities that get youth to think like scientists, engineers, and mathematicians, using technology as an integral part of their research. Career Exploration Day is a job-shadowing opportunity for high school juniors, sponsored by leaders from the Clifton community. At this all-day event, students learn about careers, resume writing and interviewing skills and techniques presented by corporate human resource representatives and the local university.

In the summertime, members participate in Summer Brain Gain, a six-week evidenced-based program, designed to mitigate summer learning loss. Members maintain the Club garden, an outdoor classroom-planting, growing, harvesting and consuming produce through experiential learning. In addition, we offer special presentations in financial literacy, and nutrition education, as well as health and wellness activities.

NICHOLAS MARTINI FOUNDATION AQUATICS CENTER

Swim Program The Aquatic Department provides classes and programs to more than 5,179 members ranging from 6 months old to adults. Parents now can easily register their children for swim lessons online using the Parent Portal website.

The swim program consists of a series of levels designed to teach toddler, youth, and adult from water exploration through skill and stroke proficiency. Our facility also offers other programs, such as adult lap swim, water exercises, and youth and family open swim. We also offer a small workout gym with equipment for adults and older swim team member use. Other rental options allow families to celebrate birthday parties and other important occasions on Saturdays and Sundays.

Our Club is also the home of the Clifton Seahawks Swim Team, who we are proud to say are a very successful and accomplished swim team. The team consists of 164 swimmers, ages five through seventeen, that take part in organized swim meets and trips throughout the season. The program offers a Pre-Swim team, currently with 16 members who are working hard to reach their goals and move on to the team in the near future. Our swimmers are well known and are recognized to have broken individual and relay records. In 2019, the Seahawks took home 2nd Place in the annual Boys & Girls Club National Championship swim competition held in St. Petersburg, Florida.

THE CLUB EXPERIENCE

Boys & Girls Club fill the gap between school and home. We provide welcoming, positive environments in which kids and teens have fun, participate in life-changing programs, and build supportive relationships with peers and caring adults.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS The Club offers programs that enable youth to become proficient in basic educational skills and to embrace technology so they can achieve sucess in a career.

GOOD CHARACTER & CITIZENSHIP Programs in this area empower youth to support and influence their club and community, sustain meaningful relationships with others, develop a positive self-image, and participate in the democratic process.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLES These programs help our youth to develop the capacity to engage in positive behaviors that nurture their own well-being, set personal goals, and live successfully as self-sufficient adults.

Boys & Girls Club of Clifton’s Programs Torch Club A chartered small group leadership and service club for young men and women ages 11 through 13. This program is designed to be a vehicle through which Club staff can help meet the special character development needs of younger adolescents at a critical stage in their life. Members learn to elect officers and work together to implement activities in four areas: service to Club and community, education, health and fitness and social recreation.

Keystone Club Leadership development experience provides opportunities for young people ages 14 through 17. Youth participate both in and out of the Club with the guidance of an adult advisor in three focus areas of academic success, career preparation and community service. BGCC had 28 participants.

Million Members, Million Hours of Service A BGCA program that is designed to get Clubs to increase the number of youth participating in volunteer and service projects to 1 million members each donating at least one hour of service in a single year. BGCC had 383 participants.

Youth of the Year A program that recognizes outstanding youth who embody all the finest leadership and character qualities of a true Boys & Girls Club member. It is an opportunity for those individuals to truly shine as representatives of our organization and as examples of the positive effect of Boys & Girls Club programs and how we influence and change young lives.

OJP Mentoring Program A program where trained adult volunteers, staff and high school mentors work with other members deemed at risk for academic failure, social difficulty or in need of a supportive mentoring relationship.

2019 Income & Expenses Dues and fees account for 50.29% of our operating budget. Membership fees are assessed per child, with discounts offered to families with more than one child enrolled. Fees for child care,after school, and aquatic programs are modest and many children receive full and partial scholarships.

The Club receives no funding from city tax dollars. The remaining 49.71 % of our $5.6 million annual budget is obtained through fundraising. This includes individual donations, grants by CASA, community development funding, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, our Annual Campaign, Summer Scholarship Campaign, Alumni Gala, Tricky Tray, Casino Night, Food & Wine Festival, Car & Motorcycle show, Food Truck Festival, and Golf Tournament Facility Rentals Other Income 1.27% 1.06%

our 2019 “Youth of the Year”

Yasmin, is an outstanding student, a 2020 graduate from Montclair Kimberly Academy. Her introduction to the Club started at age six when she started swim lessons.

10 years later, she says ‘the Club is home to me a place where I’m able to express my ideas freely, and home to many lifelong friendships.” “The Club,” she says, “provided me a place in which I’ve come to believe in myself, but also in the good in others. An active swim team member, which she says has taught her competitive skills sets and where she has learned to be disciplined and value hard work. Her dream is to attend Harvard University and continue her studies in mathematics. Through the support of the Boys & Girls Club of Clifton, Yasmin became a leader, following her passion to make a difference.
