Brian Gross Fine Art is pleased to publish a catalog of the exhibition “Ridin’ the West: Works by Roy De Forest and Dana Hart-Stone”, which was presented from July 22 – October 18, 2019 at the Edward M. Dowd Art & Art History Building Gallery at Santa Clara University. Co-organized by Brian Gross Fine Art and Santa Clara University, the exhibition explored the use of the American West by these two artists as inspiration for creating their artworks. Roy De Forest (1930-2007) was a famous American artist whose works depict figures and animals in folk-like, semi-abstracted landscapes rendered in brilliant colors, textures, and patterns inspired by the American West. Bay Area artist Dana Hart-Stone appropriates vintage vernacular photographs of life in the American West to create intricately patterned works on canvas laced with collective memory and nostalgia. His paintings pay homage to the personal histories of everyday people, while simultaneously pointing to the formation of an American identity.
