by Joe Bickerstaff How far back does the “history” of Wasaga Beach go? The forming of our sandy shores were the result of glacial activities during the Ice Age. The first non-native to walk our beach was Etienne Brule in the early 1600s. During the Way of 1812, a defining point in the conflict was the battle that occurred here and Schooner Town was a military outpost. Logging was our first industry in the mid 1800s when most of the majestic White Pines were leveled and hauled away in log booms on the river. The early 1900s saw the beginning of the Wasaga Beach as we know it today. The Capstan Inn on the beach was the first hotel of many to follow in 1912. Rail travel brought people to Stayner, Elmvale and Collingwood, where horse drawn coaches and wagons would bring them to The Beach. As the tourists came in droves, more and more businesses sprung up along the beach and river as our Main Street was developed to welcome and serve all who visited. With this relatively recent history in mind, it has always been my desire to bring together some of the local businesses people who were involved in the early days tourism in The Beach, not only to pay homage to the original Wasaga Beach families, but to remind us of the creativeness and uniqueness of The Way Wasaga Was. With the partnering of Beach BOOSTER Group and Waterside Retirement Lodge to work on this project, we held The Way Wasaga Was; Main Street Revisited on Saturday the 19th. The good folks at Waterside provided the encouragement and a lot of hard work to make this event a success! Over 300 people attended our event, all enjoying the meeting of old friends, making new ones and a trip down memory lane as they took in the many artifacts, photos and video presentations. Courtesy Mr. Photo Bing Jowet, a well known local business personality in The Beach readily volunteered his services when first approached with the idea for the event. It was Bing’s tireless efforts in tracking down and contacting 100 plus Special Guests, insuring important BING Wasaga Beach families were invited to join us. These Special Guests provided the many familiar faces and special stories that welcomed all. Beach BOOSTER Group gives a special thanks to our partner in this event, Waterside Retirement Lodge. Krista, Tanya and staff worked hard to ensure all enjoyed. We thank our participants, The Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce, The Town of Wasaga Beach, The Heritage Committee, Stonebridge Town Centre and Wild Wing-Wasaga Beach with their Wasaga Beach Speedway exhibit. Special thanks to our valued sponsors. Tim Hortons provided gifts, refreshments and treats to all who attended and our friends at 97.7 The Beach promoted the event and Chris Carrigan added to the fun and excitement as he broadcast live throughout the day from our gathering.

Wasaga Beach is just a summer place, think again! We are just getting into the Christmas season and have a lot on our minds as we look forward to the Holidays. Once Christmas is over and the fun of the New Year's arrival is enjoyed... there is still a lot to do through our Winter months. February, the shortest month yet seems forever to get through. You wake up day after day with the feeling that spring is never going to arrive and you forget what sunshine even is. Sure there is Valentine's Day but that's not really considered a holiday and it's only one day. Just when you think February couldn't get any worse you see an advertisement for Snowman Mania and suddenly things start to look up. The Town of Wasaga Beach has partnered with the Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce to bring the community a large scale winter event to celebrate winter fun and community spirit. This annual event is a true demonstration of how great events happen when great partnerships occur. Snowman Mania is way more than just snowmen. The four day festival consists of activities for all ages and interests. From a chili cook-off, snowmobile poker run, toboggan party, pancake breakfast, ice skating and not to mention the best fireworks display in Simcoe County. Almost every service club, organization, school and business gets involved one way or another with this truly community based winter celebration. This February when you can't seem to shake the winter blah's remember February 17th through February 20th is your opportunity to have that mini vacation right here in your own backyard. If you think Wasaga Beach is just a summer place, think again! ~ Holly Haire-Ellis Point of View is a regular feature of beach BOOSTER and is exactly that, simply a point of view. Any Point of View is meant to create thoughts and dialogue on how to make our Wasaga Beach an even better community to live, enjoy and to do business. We welcome your valued thoughts and feed back! yours truly, The beach BOOSTER staff.

Restoring Lake Michigan-Huron Water Levels The history and facts surrounding the significant, 12 years of unprecedented low water levels of Lakes Michigan-Huron are well documented. I have lived on Georgian Bay for over thirty-five years and it is obvious that we are losing wetlands and exposed shorelines have been taken over by the invasive reed Phragmites Australis which is so tall and dense that it provides no opportunity for wildlife or fish habitat. This water represents over one fifth of the World’s Fresh Water and carries the term “fossil water”, as it dates back 10,000 years to melting of the Glacier Ice Age. Only one percent of this water is renewed annually. But the International Upper Great Lakes Study Board has recommended that nothing be done about the 5.8% increased conveyance in the St Clair River. This loss of water from Lakes Michigan and Huron is over 2 times the diversion of Great Lakes water at Chicago and is a breech of the Boundary Waters Treaty. The gravity of the situation should be obvious. Severe impacts are already raising economic, environmental, biological and social concerns. Time has come to save these Lakes! Many solutions have been explored. Until recently, submerged, fixed or water-inflated weirs, installed in the St. Clair River to slow the water flow (like a speed bump), thereby backing-up Lake levels, seemed the preferred choice. Today, the best solution is available. This proven technology consists of a field of 396 submerged electricity-generating turbines, which would be installed on the deep sections of the river bottom of the St. Clair River near the Blue Water Bridge. The technology was invented in the Netherlands and is used extensively there and in Scotland and England to generate power from tidal action. The Bay of Fundy also has some very large 100 feet wide turbines. . Here, government studies have shown that the presence of a field of these turbines results in no impact on fish or other marine life. The Quebec Government has installed three turbines in the St. Lawrence River near Montreal on final test. Once approved, they will be used to allow communities to become energy independent. Perhaps most importantly, the State of Michigan has provided a permit to an independent private company to install three test turbines in the St. Clair River. The turbines are installed now. They will evaluate if this type of installation can generate electricity profitably. Reputable hydrologists have recently studied what impact the installation of a grid of 396 turbines would have. Their conclusions suggest that if the turbines are installed very slowly, over a 10 year period, Michigan-Huron water levels would gradually increase by approximately 25cm (10 inches) over an 18 year period. Also, during this period water levels of Lakes St. Clair and Erie would decline temporarily by 5- 8cm (2- 3 inches) over the first 10 years, then gradually recover to normal levels by the end of the 18 year period. This well-proven technological solution provides a wellbalanced path to avoid the catastrophic effects of serious, further water level declines in Lake Michigan/Huron. At the same time, this solution generates significant electrical power on a constant rate, 24 hours a day, every day. A green solution that is on the shelf, ready to be implemented. Music Angel Gets High Praise After having a chance to try the Music Angel I can truly say I’m impressed. The sound is great and the convenience of a small portable speaker system with an internal rechargeable battery can’t be beat. It’s so versatile I’ve enjoyed using it while in my shop, relaxing on the deck and surfing the internet. It has turned my Ipad from a device that cuts you off from the people around you to a music source to be enjoyed by the entire group. The FM Radio reception is excellent and I'm putting on all my favourite music on a Mini SD CARD to be played on Music Angel. Release Date: Wednesday November 23, 2011 Runtime: 1hr 38min Genre: Family, Musical Studio: Walt Disney Pictures Director: James Bobin Original Music Composer: Christophe Beck Screenplay: Jason Segel, Nicholas Stoller, Jim Henson (Characters) Cast: Jason Segel, Amy Adams, Chris Cooper, Rashida Jones

The Muppets has received nothing but positive reviews and I understand why. It is a happy musical comedy that could cheer up even the grumpiest and crustiest filmgoer because with The Muppets you can never really go wrong with it’s joyful and fun disposition. It will bring a big smile to your face. If it doesn’t; well then perhaps you have lost the little kid inside yourself. The Muppets is a movie that audiences of all ages can appreciate especially if you like musical comedy and can allow yourself to enjoy these comical puppets that were first originally created by legendary puppeteer Jim Henson. Walter, the world’s biggest Muppet fan; travels to Hollywood with his brother Gary (Jason Segal) along with his brother’s girlfriend Mary (Amy Adams) to visit the original Muppet Theater which is located in an old building. They soon discover that an underhanded and greedy businessman Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) plans to profit by getting rid of the famous building. Walter and Gary come up with a plan to get all the Muppets back together – with the help of Kermit the Frog – to stage a huge fund-raising telethon. They need to raise $10 million dollars to save the theater. Along the way we are treated to several musical dance scenes and there is enough humor added to make us all laugh. I was especially impressed with Amy Adams. She had a refreshing presence on the screen and her musical number in the restaurant was my favorite musical scene. Chris Cooper also had me surprised with his funny rap number. It was fun to see all the old characters – Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear and Kermit the Frog. Watching The Muppets reminded me of being in my daughter’s bedroom when we have fun playing together with all her stuffed animals. When we just allow our imaginations to run loose and to be kids again it is amazing how much fun we can have. Note: Our movie reviewer, Peter Frieday watches the movies locally at CinePlex in Collingwood and volunteers to write reviews from his home in our area. Peter will not write a review about a movie unless he has seen the movie himself.

Epicure's Everyday Meatloaf

How the Internet Got Started In ancient Israel , it came to pass that a trader by the name of Abraham Com did take unto himself a young wife by the name of Dot. And Dot Com was a comely woman, broad of shoulder and long of leg. Indeed, she was often called Amazon Dot Com. And she said unto Abraham, her husband, "Why dost thou travel so far from town to town with thy goods when thou canst trade without ever leaving thy tent?" And Abraham did look at her as though she were several saddle bags short of a camel load, but simply said, "How, dear?" And Dot replied, "I will place drums in all the towns and drums in between to send messages saying what you have for sale, and they will reply telling you who hath the best price. And the sale can be made on the drums and delivery made by Uriah's Pony Stable (UPS)." Abraham thought long and decided he would let Dot have her way with the drums. And the drums rang out and were an immediate success. Abraham sold all the goods he had at the top price, without ever having to move from his tent. To prevent neighboring countries from overhearing what the drums were saying, Dot devised a system that only she and the drummers knew. It was known as Must Send Drum Over Sound (MSDOS), and she also developed a language to transmit ideas and pictures - Hebrew To The People (HTTP). And the young men did take to Dot Com's trading as doth the greedy horsefly take to camel dung. They were called Nomadic Ecclesiastical Rich Dominican Sybarites, or NERDS. And lo, the land was so feverish with joy at the new riches and the deafening sound of drums that no one noticed that the real riches were going to that enterprising drum dealer, Brother William of Gates, who bought off every drum maker in the land. And indeed did insist on drums to be made that would work only with Brother Gates' drumheads and drumsticks. And Dot did say, "Oh, Abraham, what we have started is being taken over by others." And Abraham looked out over the Bay of Ezekiel , or eBay as it came to be known. He said, "We need a name that reflects what we are." And Dot replied, "Young Ambitious Hebrew Owner Operators." "YAHOO," said Abraham. And because it was Dot's idea, they named it YAHOO Dot Com. Abraham's cousin, Joshua, being the young Gregarious Energetic Educated Kid (GEEK) that he was, soon started using Dot's drums to locate things around the countryside. It soon became known as God's Own Official Guide to Locating Everything (GOOGLE). That is how it all began. And that's the truth.

Sails on the Ice

Winter is on its way complete with the sports of the season. One that is rarely seen today was common on the Lakes of Georgian Bay. Ice boating was once popular on frozen sheets of ice at Wasaga Beach and in the harbors of Collingwood, Barrie and Orillia and on lakes like Simcoe and Couchiching. Iceboats were usually homemade affairs. Built in a triangular shape and mounted on these large skates, the iceboat had a mast and a bowsprit carrying two sails. The normal crew was two but up to a dozen passengers could hitch a ride. Travelling in a good winter wind the iceboat often attained a speed of 25 miles an hour in those pre-metric days.

There was an added thrill in whipping across ice on Georgian Bay. Catching a good breeze also meant keeping constant outlook for cracks, air holes or surface springs. Many an iceboat flew over the ice and then suddenly under it. Except in parts of Quebec and Ontario's north iceboating lost its following sometime after the First World War. On the frozen lakes of Georgian Bay this winter there is a new seasonal sport designed to get the adrenalin rushing. Invented by the most devout of summer sailboarders, surfing on ice consists of mounting the traditional windsurfer mast and sail on two ordinary downhill skis with a crossbar joining them. Using the same boots and bindings that alpine skiers employ for getting down slopes, the ice surfer hops on his skis and through artful balancing and pure nerve, takes across the ice sometimes at incredible speeds. Don't forget to wear a helmet. And there are now commercial rigs on the market so check with your summertime sailboard shop for a rig.

Snowmobile Pre-Season Tips from the Wasaga Snowmobile Club and our friends at SNOWGOER MAGAZINE This is one of the best times of the year. We've already transitioned from summer into fall, and now we're slowly sliding from fall into winter. The cold nights, a coating of frost in the morning, getting outside marking trails and getting ready for another snowmobile season are all wonderful elements of this season. Another important thing that should be on your checklist is to make sure your sled is ready so that when the first rideable snow falls, you can pull the cord and go. Whether you do the work or leave it up to a shop, here are three snowmobile pre-season tips. 1.Bearings Early season bearing failures are common because snowmobiles sit stationary all summer while the bearing and its race picks up corrosion. Once the bearing starts to roll again, the corroded bearing and race heat up and either damage the seal and cause loss of lubrication or the heat draws in moisture and causes complete failure. To prevent this, grease the bearing — if possible — now before you hit the trail, and be sure to do it next spring before storage. Listen for noise and wear, replace them if you can hear a lot of grumbling or can feel roughness. 2.Carburetors If a carbureted sled won't idle, the sled needs some attention, otherwise it could suffer damage that is expensive to repair. Start your machine and evaluate its running quality. It should idle smoothly and consistently within about 15 seconds. If it won't continue to run without your help, either by running the choke or primer, the pilot jets in the carburetors are probably plugged, and if those jets are obstructed, the main jets likely are, too. A plugged pilot jet won't usually cause damage, just poor low-end performance, but if fuel can't flow through the main jets — which come into play above half throttle — the fuel/air ratio will be too lean and cause a burndown. Just like that, you're out a few hundred bucks that it takes to rebuild it. 3.Chaincase You wouldn't drive your truck if it didn't have transmission fluid, and you certainly shouldn't drive a snowmobile without lubrication for its drivetrain, either. Chaincase oil might have leaked out over the summer months, leaving the chain and sprockets dry, and without oil in the case to cool and make the parts slippery, they probably won't last more than a few miles. Chaincase oil should be changed annually because it breaks down due to heat, and it can even absorb moisture caused by the hot/cold cycles. You can get away with simply draining and refilling the oil, but it's best to remove the chaincase cover and inspect the parts for excessive wear or damage.
