Dissolvable Noodle Packaging
In the existing world of instant ramen noodles, there is often more plastic than noodle. With 100 billion annual servings worldwide, instant noodles can be cooked and eaten in under ten minutes. The plastic packaging, however, can take eight decades or more to decompose. Most kerbside recycling schemes do not accept plastic film packaging, contributing considerably to plastic pollution. This devastating issue encouraged me to develop a solution in 2019, during my second year studying Product Design at Ravensbourne University London. The result? The dissolvable noodle pack.
Dry noodles are packaged in an edible, tasteless starchbased film that dissolves in contact with boiling water. To eliminate plastic sachets of seasonings, the dried spices and flavourings have been incorporated into the starch-based film at the manufacturing stage. When cooked, the film dissolves and the seasonings are released into the noodles without the need for fiddly plastic sachets. The biobased film is heat sealed to ensure the noodles stay fresh. To further dispense with unnecessary plastic, and for hygiene purposes, the noodle parcels are packaged in a wax-coated paper outer.
Looking ahead I hope to develop this project further. I aim to explore the opportunities that dehydrated ready meals and food waste reduction present. This project will be the start of combining sustainability with convenience, to effortlessly pursue a more environmentally conscious lifestyle.
