September in the Forest
This summer I have had many hours of enjoyment sitting by my garden pond, watching and noting the varied wild plants and animals that live there or make visits. The pond was made with plenty of hard work: hours of digging, placing the liner, planting aquatic and marginal plants and finally softening the edges with rocks and pebbles. I am heartily grateful to all those who’ve helped with this 9-year project!
There have been successes and failures. On the positive side, we had creatures such as newts, backswimmers and pond skaters almost from day one. There had been a sheep dip at the farm which had filled up with water and turned into quite a nice little pond in its own right, so when the big new pond was filled we scooped out its residents and relocated them. Dragonflies and damselflies visited, as did frogs and toads. Birds came to drink and bathe in the shallows; pied wagtails being the most frequent bathers.
The establishment of pond plants was more troublesome. Submerged plants such as hornwort and even the usually rampant Canadian pond weed just refused to get going for years. This didn’t help the water quality, which often resembled pea soup. Now things are rather better, but my attempts to transplant the three kinds of pond snails have still come to nothing, so keeping the water clean is a struggle. This year I’ve had a new visitor which features in the photo. Can you spot it? It’s a caterpillar of a china-mark moth: a pretty brown and white-mottled moth named presumably for the resemblance to china makers’ marks. The larva makes itself a little raft with oval pieces chewed out of leaves, lying snugly between the 2 and drifting about on the pond surface. The unfortunate thing is that I have so many and the plants have taken quite a hit! Late September is the best time to carry out any pond work such as thinning out over-exuberant vegetation. I shall try to scoop out some of the slime lying on the bottom without disturbing too many beasties, which won’t be hibernating yet.
Of course the ‘natural’ ponds in the forest don’t get cleared out and seldom get any attention at all unless they are damaged, for instance in the case of the 2007 floods when at least two of the larger water bodies overtopped their dams. They do have a natural progression; a life cycle of colonisation and growth that takes them towards damp scrub and woodland. Left to their own devices they would cease to be water bodies at all. This would not concern us if enough new ponds were being formed by natural or artificial means to take their place, but this habitat is scarce and the populations of creatures which rely on it are in a precarious state. This month always has a feeling of returning to the norm; of picking up where we left off when the sun came out and we realised it was holiday time. I’ve written before about routine and its benefits, but the other side of that “getting back to normal” is rummaging around to find out what normal looks like post-holiday. For instance, how did we manage to start the day off with such slickness? Where are all the things associated with work as opposed to play? And why aren’t there any clean dishes for morning cereal?
All this looking back was sparked off by a visit to my garage to search for a paintbrush. In the corner, just behind the terribly useful crate of electrical things that have proliferated since the millenium (when I moved house but haven’t touched since) is a big box of back numbers of the Bridge. You see, I keep one copy every month just in case. Not sure in case of what, but they make mildly interesting reading. Seeing them there, I dusted a few off and began reading. Then I thought I’d try sharing some bits and pieces with you each month till we all get bored. You’ll find this month’s on p29 but what chiefly struck me was how little has changed. September 1995 had a front page headline, “Why Not Join The W.I?”. The Community Centre in Shaw Hedge Road was humming with activity and Bewdley Festival was drumming up support for the following month. On the other hand, the magazine still had the unmistakeable flavour of a church magazine, was in black and white with no photos, and was only 28 pages long. So actually I think the magazine itself has changed quite a lot. Colour photos, many more articles from our readers, news of clubs that would have made the 1995 readers widen their eyes and exclaim “Zumba? What’s that?” And Flood barriers - if only!” So there have been changes; and not all change is for the worse. Margaret

The Hunt is on for Reading Champions in the Wyre Forest area!
If you’re reading this sentence without any difficulty, then you’re probably someone who, like most of us, gives little thought to what life would be like if you couldn’t read.
It may be one thing not to have read your favourite book or a newspaper, but can you imagine the effect it would have had on your everyday life, if you had not been able to read anything at all? Not road signs, labels on supermarket goods, application forms, letters from your electricity supplier or child’s school, instructions on medicines, a bed-time story for your child or grandchild
A ‘Skills for Life’ survey of 16-65 years olds in 2011 found that 5% of adults in England and Wales could only recognise a few common words, with a further 2.1% barely able to read simple health and safety notices at work; that’s hundreds of thousands of people. But help is at hand. A pioneering, registered charity called Read Easy UK, which was set up in 2011 to tackle this ‘invisible’ problem, has already helped hundreds of people learn to read. It is now on a mission to set up a branch in the Wyre Forest and Cleobury Mortimer area – but needs volunteers to make it a reality.
To get things off the ground, Read Easy is looking for people who are interested in supporting the group by helping to set up a managing committee, fund-raise or assist with possible venues. There may also be organisations, agencies or individuals who can support by referring people who struggle with their reading. And, of course, there will also be a need for volunteer reading coaches.
An open public meeting to explain how the Read Easy scheme works and how people can get involved will take place at Kidderminster Library, Market Street, Kidderminster at 5.15 p.m. on Tuesday 3rd October 2017. Sharing, Celebrating and Enhancing John Ruskin's Legacy in the Wyre Forest
The launch of an exciting new project took place at Bewdley Museum on 24th July. Based at St. George's Farm in Ruskin Land, the area of the Wyre Forest cared for by Ruskin’s Guild of St George and managed by the Wyre Community Land Trust, the project aims to explore the story of what happened at Ruskin Land, how Ruskin’s ideas have been incorporated into the modern forest, and what can be done to reinterpret his vision today in meaningful, creative and productive ways.
Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Guild of St George, the project seeks to deepen the links between the local community and the forest through a wide range of events and activities starting with the ABC of Ruskin Land exhibition, which has been running through July and August in the Museum sawyard. The two-year programme begins this summer and concludes in 2019 when the bicentenary of John Ruskin’s birth will be celebrated. Tickets are now on sale for Bewdley’s seventh annual celebration of writing. John le Carré appears on the Thursday evening in a live-streamed event from the Royal Festival Hall. Four Sunday Times bestsellers appear in person: Sarah Turner, known to millions as ‘The Unmumsy Mum’; writers of women’s fiction, Milly Johnson and Cathy Bramley; and romantic novelist Dinah Jefferies who is making her second appearance in Book Week.
The event culminates on the Saturday night when Brian Patten joins us to read new and favourite poems and reflect on his career with Neville Farmer.
Three actors Ray Brooks, Brian Freeland and John Challis, cover acting, travel and garden renovation and Barney Hoskyns is this year’s chronicler of the music scene. Local writers, Anne and Lizzie Hill on local history, Tim Gibbons on football, Fenella Flack on the follow up to Ironside, and Rosemary Winnall MBE on the Nature of Wyre, complete the eclectic and exciting Bewdley Book Week line up.

Burltons, Cookes & Sayers Almshouses
Bewdley operates many charities but one which might not be so well known is the Almshouse Charity. It came together in 1998 following the amalgamation of six Charitable Trusts that had been founded many years ago by generous benefactors.
There are three separate houses in Park Lane, High Street and Lower Park providing a total of 14 dwellings some of which can accommodate couples. They provide affordable accommodation for older people who have lived and served within the community and who have limited ďŹ nancial means. All the properties are about 400 years old and are Grade II Listed which brings with it a host of different challenges! The Cookes site was a former bakehouse which is unique and picturesque with its tall chimneys.
The charity is chaired by Richard Perrin and ďŹ ve local volunteer trustees. I am the clerk and manage the sites day to day with the support of a warden. Residents pay a weekly maintenance contribution which is similar to rent. There is currently a small waiting list but applications are always welcomed if you ďŹ t the criteria; details of which can be obtained from the clerk by calling 07738 554932 or e-mailing s.harvey1885@btinternet.com.

Community News As School holidays finish and a new academic year begins, school bookings are really busy during September World War 2 events especially. Luckily for me, we have expanded our staff, so a big welcome to Ruth Stevenson, David Bonnick and Barbara Paradise. This will enable the Museum to offer a diverse and extended curriculum to schools and Groups. Basic Crochet classes start on Thursday 7th September. Classes will be based in the education room. They will be for an hour and a half per session and the cost will be £10.00 per session. The first course will last for four weeks and will enable you to produce blanket squares. There will be some wool available for these early learning sessions and that is included in the price. Bewdley Museum and Tourist Information Centre Service Science Survey at Bewdley Museum
During May, June and July Bewdley Museum took part in a survey conducted by a national company called Service Science. As part of the West Midlands Development Programme the company anonymously visited, called and contacted the museum in a number of ways. Service Science carry out several hundred visits a year on nationally. Within our survey there were 14 categories and within each of these areas there were up to 25 detailed questions.
Our results are absolutely fantastic; overall we scored 95.4% out of 100%
Axel Klenert from Service Science MD visited all of the West Midland Museums last year and said that Bewdley is certainly one of the top five. He said, “I was very impressed when I visited. I would confidently recommend Bewdley Museum as Best in its Class and would have no problem suggesting to West Midlands Development Team that they use it as a leading example of a modern run heritage site without having lost its main objective”. One of my themes has been how a single dad struggles to perform tasks often associated with mum such as the mystery of platting a little girl's hair or baking a cake. From my point of view such things are a foreign language - I know it
It is thus something of a disappointment that jobs traditionally the male reserve are to me only slightly less obtuse. Tiles frustrate. I put a few tiles up in my kitchen without a spirit level. At the time they didn't seem wonky but on later reflection they remind me of counterfeit cigarettes.
The grouting in my bathroom has steadily been blackening from mould. I have tried bleach and some recommended potion from B 'n' Q without any real success. I found £1 grout in a pound shop in Kidderminster. Smearing the new grout over the old superficially solved one problem but left my tiles knobbly with grout that missed its mark.
My hot tap upstairs has a life of its own. It is liable to randomly make a 'chunk, chunk, chunk' sound when it tires of service.
It seems as I tackle and bodge-solve one house problem another pops up. What good am I if I fail in both roles?
With no wife to give me words of encouragement I turned to my daughter for a moral fillip. She studied the bathroom tiling and grout and noted, "You missed a bit."

This month we are looking back to 1995, the year eBay was launched, Sarajevo was under siege and John Major became P.M.
Here in Bewdley, bingo, Friendship Circle and playgroups could be found over at Shaw Hedge Road; you could take a Phillips coach to the Lake District for 3 days for ÂŁ120, the Medical Centre wanted to set up a voluntary patient transport group. Bewdley Butchery sent in a rather awful poem and Forever Christmas had a Tea Room. There was a four-page insert from Bewdley Primary Health Care team with a long section on Sun Protection and travel advice; Dr Inglis was about to become one of the first people in the world to obtain a post-grad qualification in Travel Medicine. KODS to perform Olivier Award winning Comedy ‘Nell Gwynn’
Kidderminster Operatic & Dramatic Society (KODS) are looking forward to being one of the first amateurs to perform the new award winning comedy ‘Nell Gwynn’ at the Rose theatre, 20-23rd September. The play by Jessica Swale gives a whistlestop tour of Nell's life from orange seller to star in Thomas Killigrew's King's Company, as one of the first English actresses, and as Charles II's mistress. Historical accuracy is not Swale's intent, but it's a fair approximation to real events. The leading role Nell Gwynn it to be played by Jill Parmenter with Ian Jones as Charles II and whe whole cast are enjoying rehearsals in preparation for what will be an enjoyable evening of wit, passion, pathos, with some medieval music and frivolity thrown in. Professionally ‘Nell Gwynn’ previously won the 2016 Laurence Olivier best Comedy award and has had many critically acclaimed reviews from the press and punters alike.
The show’s director, Tom Paine, says; ‘This show has been an enjoyable challenge and a nice change to the usual plays we perform. The mix of comedy and music with a good story and characters make this a fantastic play. The cast have been working hard ready to give a great evening of ntertainment’. ‘Nell Gwynn’ will run from Wednesday 20th to Saturday 23rd September. Stourport based charity Mentor Link is looking for volunteers to help in the charity shop on High Street.

Bewdley Festival 2017 celebrating 30 years of success and the WI
The WI features this year, with Maggie Andrews’ presentation on the afternoon of Tuesday 10th October entitled ‘100 Years of the Womens Institute – The Acceptable Face of Feminism’. Elsewhere in the daytime programme, local naturalist and broadcaster Brett Westwood is close to selling out again and fans of The Archers are looking forward to a visit from Timothy Watson aka ‘Rob Titchener’.
But it is the women who are proving popular. Jenni Murray and Sara Pascoe are very nearly sold out, impressionist Jan Ravens is selling very well and, only 10 days after tickets went on sale, Lesley Smith is sold out.
For music lovers there is a rare treat with 10cc’s Graham Gouldman’s ‘Heart Full of Songs’ touring for the first time since 2013, plus The Tom Robinson Band visiting Bewdley as part of a short exclusive tour, T’pau appearing in full concert mode and a Classical concert of celebratory music in St Anne’s Church.
And don’t forget Roger McGough and Little Machine on opening night – poetry and music in a great mix – finishing with a rousing chorus of Lily the Pink!

This year Cards for Good Causes will again open its shop in St. George’s Hall Undercroft (basement). We look forward to seeing all our regular customers and friends. We shall be open for business on Monday 24th October until Saturday 16th December, 10am to 4pm.
Cards for Good Causes (CFGC) sells Christmas cards and other small gifts on behalf of 30 charities both local and national. CFGC gives back at least 70p in the £ to the original charity. We have an excellent team of over 30 local people from Bewdley and the surrounding areas who work in the shop for short periods of time. We would be pleased to welcome any new volunteers to our team. Bewdley Town Council News September
Car Parking Charge Increases The Town Council have lodged an objection to Wyre Forest District Council’s plans to raise car parking charges in Bewdley from October. The objections are as follows: 1. The Council objects to any increases in charges which there has been no justification given. The charges are already high in relation to other similar towns in Worcestershire. 2. The Council does not agree that car parking policy should be standardised across the district as Bewdley attracts very different types of visitors to, say, Kidderminster, focussing more on tourism which means that there MUST be provision for coaches, mini buses and camper type vehicles to park in the town. Height barriers and new restrictions on any vehicle over 2m parking on any surface car park does not work for Bewdley. 3. The Council objects to the OAP season ticket qualifying age being raised to 67, considering that the Government is not planning to increase the State Pension age to 67 until 2026. What justification is there for this? These comments were lodged with the Solicitor of the Council at Wyre Forest House on the 8th August. Heritage Festival and Harvest Fair As we enter the Autumn season we have two very exciting weekends coming up in Bewdley. The first is the Heritage Festival on the 9th - 10th September which will include a heritage market and a display of all the town’s historic regalia in the Guildhall. On October the 7th and 8th the town will host the Harvest Fair which will include the Riverside Market, soup trail, apple pie competition and a whole lot more to be revealed shortly! www.bewdleytowncouncil.org Victorian Christmas in Bewdley The Town Council are organising the second Victorian Christmas in Bewdley and Lights Switch On which this year is on Saturday 2nd December. The huge market will open at 11am with main stage entertainment from 2pm-7pm. More details to follow but put the date in your diaries! Local Development Plan The Council submitted its response to Wyre Forest DC’s Preferred Options consultation. The response was in line with the emerging Neighbourhood Plan objectives and policies. The response can be found on our website on the “consultations” page. Future Town Council Meetings Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.00pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise (Please note change of time).
