Editorial News

The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley

It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month Visit us at www.bewdleybridge.org.uk

Welcome to December’s edition of The Bridge.

Bewdley Town Council wants to find out what residents think about their idea of purchasing the former Barclays Bank building in Load Street. Turn to page 47 to find where to get more information about this proposal and how to register your views.

On page 23, we invite you to share a Saturday night in Bewdley with the Street Pastors. Discover why this team of people is willing to be on our streets in all weathers into the small hours, and why lollies and flipflops are so popular.

As the long dark nights set in and the weather becomes colder, we are fortunate that there are organisations in Bewdley offering a warm welcome to those who appreciate some company in the daytime. The Together Project and Bewdley Evergreens are always pleased to see new faces. Turn to pages 27 and 41 for contact details.

Elsewhere in the magazine, October’s Bewdley Festival and Duck House Community Arts project are celebrated. See the winning duck houses and read about a bit of railway history in the centre pages.

And this month’s magazine is, of course, full of events to celebrate Christmas: carols and concerts, theatre and pantomime, charity events and festivals. As ever during Advent and Christmas, Bewdley’s churches offer special services from carols in candlelight to the excitement of a busy nativity service. Look out for details throughout the magazine.

Margaret, Martin, Ann, Peter and Gill wish you all a very happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

Saturday night in Bewdley

It’s 11o’clock, and the Street Pastors in their navy uniforms walk two by two down Load Street. One pair stop to talk to the doorman at The George and agree with him that it’s fairly quiet tonight. On the other side of the road the other pair stop to pick up a discarded glass and bottle left against a shop front and put them in a litter bin where they can’t do any harm. The four join up to check out Arches and greet members of the crowd which covers the pavements.

After midnight it’s another story, with a mass of inebriated people on the move and some competing noisily for taxis. Two girls are weaving up the street, not doing a very good job of supporting each other. On enquiry they say they’re fine but one accepts a pair of flip-flops in place of her risky heels and they carry on up to the next watering hole. A group further on ask what the Street Pastors do: ‘Do you go to church or something?’, ‘Do you look after lads too?’, ‘Haven’t you got boyfriends to go out with?’ They are drunk but friendly, and they are given business cards and asked to ‘like’ the Bewdley Street Pastors on Facebook. They’ve heard of the lollies (good de-fusers of arguments and a source of sugar to counteract the alcohol) and get one each before the Pastors move on.

It’s something anyone from Bewdley’s churches can do after some preliminary training. Its value is in making the town a safer, friendlier place for evening visitors out for a drink. A helping hand at the right time can pre-empt trouble later, reducing accidents, violence and preventing people in a vulnerable state being taken advantage of. Christmas and New Year especially, for many people, are times to enjoy yourself by excessive drinking. Pubs and bars have successful businesses but sometimes the consequences for Bewdley can be that the centre of the town suffers noise, litter and unpleasant surprises on the pavements and doorways.

At this time of the year, please think of the Street Pastors who patrol their town because they love it and want it to be a good and happy place for everyone to be.

Bewdley Traders’ Association

The Bewdley Traders’ Association is being reformed in order to contribute towards the development of our town. We believe there is an urgent need to come together to consider how the town can plan to attract in new businesses, provide a positive welcome to visitors and develop the local economy.

The annual subscription will be £20, which then gives traders access to a range of support services from the Hereford and Worcester Chamber of Commerce. The Association is also being supported by the Town Council and the Towns Centre Manager.

Bewdley’s part in railway ca Pictures of Flying Scotsman in last month’s Bridge recorded the Severn Valley Railway visit in September by this famous locomotive. Less well known is that this visit also marked another significant piece of railway history. Quietly and determinedly since 1972, carriage restorers have been steadily overhauling nine old teak-bodied carriages from the London & North Eastern Railway services between London, the North, East Anglia and Scotland. These were all designed by Sir Nigel Gresley, chiefly famous for his Flying Scotsman and Mallard locomotives. Mallard still holds the 126mph world speed record for steam. The group works in all weathers, mainly on an open site in Bewdley Station Yard. As the SVR’s fares don’t cover such restorations, members have also raised the money for these projects, the last two restorations costing £185k and £75k. Recently completed was the ninth restoration, adapting a former pigeon van to become a ‘Brake Third’ with some passenger seating. This vehicle originally carried parcels traffic and baskets of racing pigeons for release at remote locations. Such traffic was once a major railway business but now all goes by road. Part of this carriage is restored to original condition reflecting this former pigeon traffic. The last time nine Gresley teak carriages formed a single train was for a special charter in May 1964 – also involving haulage by Flying Scotsman. The engine’s fame rather over-shadowed this piece of carriage history made on SVR and Bewdley’s part in this. The quote of the event must be from the lady who asked whether the carriages behind Flying Scotsman were “from the train that costs a lot and goes to Venice”! All nine carriages in the SVR’s Gresley ‘teak train’ hauled by Flying Scotsman are owned by the SVR’s Charitable Trust. Earlier this year one of their LNER teak carriages was a high profile exhibit at London’s King’s Cross connected with the unveiling of Sir Nigel Gresley’s statue there. The Trust always welcomes donations to assist its on-going restoration work. More information at http://svrtrust.org.uk.

Mistletoe and Whine

My favourite time of year approaches once more, all too soon; indeed my condition is now so bad I start feeling lousy as soon as the clocks go back. No amount of cash spent by Coca Cola and John Lewis is going to get me in the mood for Christmas. I am what I am; I've embraced it. End of. So rather than spoil the mood I'll just remind you that we are now in our new spot in the medical centre building (at the far end; you can access us from the waiting room if you've been to the see the doctor).

We are still offering Rhyme Time on Friday mornings at 9.30 am, so if you have a little one (0-3 years) please feel free to come along and join in.* Don't be shy!

We are also still offering sessions with our Digital Champion Christine, who can help you get started and ďŹ nd your way around your laptop or tablet. Contact the library for an appointment; she is here on Thursdays between 10 am and 12 noon. Just think, if you can access the internet you can go online and follow Father Christmas's progress around the world on Christmas Eve!........If you really want to.

Seriously, hope you all have a good one. Kay Sanderson Bewdley Library

The Festive season will start in the Museum on Sunday 4th December (1pm-2.15pm) with ‘The Little English Theatre Co’s’ production of Zorro’s Christmas Adventure. This tells the story of the time when Santa crash lands in Mexico, and it looks like Christmas is going to be cancelled. Fortunately, Santa meets the one and only Zorro and all is well! Tickets for the production are £4 per person and are available in advance from the Tourist Information Centre.

Father Christmas’s Grotto will be open for business on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th December, from 12pm – 3pm. Throughout the whole day, 10am-4.30pm, delicious seasonal food will be served in the Shambles Cafe, a wide variety of traditional and contemporary Craft items will be on sale and there will be Live Music around the site. On Saturday, Winterfold School will be providing the entertainment, whilst on Sunday, visitors can come along and join Lutley Community Voices choir as they perform a selection of Christmas favourites. Further information about ‘What’s on’ at the Museum can be found on our website: www.bewdleymuseum.co.uk or phone 0845 603 5699. The Museum Shop and TIC will be offering extended opening hours for this Winter Season, when it will be open daily from 10am - 4.30pm. The retail staff have been stocking up with plenty of seasonal goods. There are lots of Gift ideas for everyone and, of course, service with a smile. Bewdley Festival Community Arts Project Duck House Trail 2016 Winners

Eager participants gathered last month at St George’s Hall, Bewdley to hear the result of this year’s public voting. The forty-plus entries had been on display in the town’s Jubilee Gardens throughout October and had attracted over 800 public votes. The project is the brainchild of Colin Hill, Bewdley Festival’s Arts co-ordinator, who presented trophies to the winner and runners up. The blank duckhouses, ready for decoration, were made by users of The Emily Jordan Foundation, a local charity whose aim is to help people with moderate learning and physical disabilities to lead full lives. Funding to run the project came from an award by the Mid-counties Co-operative Community Fund. Shayne Taylor from the Co-operative Communities team congratulated Bewdley Festival for the success of this year’s event with its widespread community support. Dave Collins from Bewdley Festival was pleased to see the community taking part in even greater numbers and with even more ingenuity of design.” The top three were very closely grouped. First place was awarded to Bewdley Tennis Club, represented by Nicky Guest, second place was The Old Waggon and Horses, represented by Denise Eaton, and in third place was Bewdley Primary School, represented by Helen Humphrey. Pictures of the winning duck houses are on this month’s colour pages. Denise Eaton, Nicky Guest and Helen Humphrey

Christmas Rush, Bewdley Style

CARDS FOR GOOD CAUSES CHRISTMAS 2016

With Christmas not too far away, I’ll pull out all the stops and buy a range of lovely gifts in Bewdley’s local shops.

The Cards for Good Causes shop remains open in St. George’s Hall until 18th December on Mondays to Saturdays10am - 4.30pm

My first stop is at Notions and I consider wools and patterns for my crafty niece and daughter who’ll love those beads and buttons.

The Bewdley shop sells cards for over 30 charities, both local and national, along with many stocking fillers, gift tags and wrapping. At least 75p in every £1 goes direct to the charities.

At the Melting Pot I stop to buy a teapot for my brother. Hand-painted by ‘Yours truly’. it won’t be like any other!

There’s the shop in the Museum and Traidcraft in St Anne’s for things to put in stockings for eager little hands.

Rooms for Hire

at the Quaker Meeting House Lower Park, Bewdley Range of rooms Fully equipped kitchen Disability friendly Attractive secluded garden Reasonable rates For more information about hiring this historic building please contact: Tony Sargent on: 01299 405943 or tigrish@btinternet.com

Satsumas from the Farm Shop, the chemist’s soaps and creams, nice books in the Emporium. There’s plenty here, it seems.

Pretty scarves are to be had in all the town’s gift shops. The florist has Christmas cactuses and hyacinths in pots.

Mum claims she won’t need anything but I don’t follow what she says. I buy chocolate from the Post Office, liquorice from Teddy Gray’s.

Art Exhibition by Bewdley artist

Some bottles from the Brewery and Stilton blue and smelly: I’ll make a Christmas hamper up with goodies from the Deli.

John Instance

3rd and 4th December 11am-4 pm The Old Town Hall, Wyre Hill.

I want to look in every shop; they look so bright and cheery. I’ll pause for tea and gooey cake, then I won’t be so weary!

Behind the Baton

By the time you read this, the Bewdley Christmas lights will have been switched on, the first taste of mulled wine will have crossed our lips and I will have sung my first batch of carols for this Christmas season!

If you fancy a very traditional and seasonal musical introduction to Christmas, then can I encourage you to put the 10th December in your calendars when Bewdley Choral Society will be giving their annual Carol Concert in St. Anne’s church. I find it can be quite a challenge choosing Christmas music because I often get lured back to all my old favourites, sometimes accompanied by a resulting groan from the choir “not that one AGAIN” when I announce what’s next at a rehearsal. So this year, I am determined to pick some different carols and avoid the trap of the same old stuff! Having said that, there will be plenty of the usual favourites for audience participation, so if you want to spend an evening in a warm church and get into the Christmas mood, please come and join us then. Look out as well for the Bewdley Concert Band Christmas concert on 18th December.

Music is and has always been such an integral part of Christmas but, sadly, these days we are subjected to Christmas tunes from early October in the shops so the novelty tends to wear off a bit by the time it’s actually Christmas. Piped music in a shop cannot come close to the enjoyment of live music at this time of year and there will be plenty of it in Bewdley, as always and appealing to all tastes. So if you don’t fancy the traditional approach, please keep an eye out on the web, the billboards and in shop/pub windows for all the various live music events that will be happening and allow a little musical Christmas cheer to lighten up your Christmas holiday. A Happy Christmas to you all. Alastair Elliott

Kidderminster and District Soroptimists

At our last Business Meeting we welcomed Lucy Buckland from Worcestershire Young Carers to tell us about the work this organisation is doing with children and young people who look after a parent, guardian or sibling within their home.Young carers often provide regular and ongoing care and emotional support for family members with a physical or learning disability, long-term illness, mental health difficulties, drug or alcohol dependency or other forms of addictions. Most of these carers are between 10-14 years, but they can be significantly younger. The 2011 Census figures show that in Worcestershire 3490 children and young people identified themselves as young carers.

The Worcester Team gives support to about 250 young carers aged 7 – 25, including a number in our area. The aim of the work is to raise the young carers’ self-esteem and confidence by providing the ‘space’ to express frustration in a positive way. This is done with dedicated one-to-one support as well as monthly club meetings, exciting day trips and short breaks. These give the youngsters the time and the space to have fun and mix with other young carers who understand their situation. They can be children for a short time. The profits from our recent Afternoon Tea with Henry Sandon were given to this charity and our president had great pleasure in handing over a cheque for £500 to Lucy Buckland.

Collections for Refugees

Clothing collections to support refugees in camps in France and beyond are currently being taken at All Saints’ Church. Collections will also be taken at St. Anne's Church between 8th-11th December.

Meets in the garden on the east side of the river just below Bewdley Bridge at 1.45pm for a prompt start at 2.00pm.

Sunday 4th December: a walk of approximately 2-3 miles in the Ribbesford area. Sunday 1st January: a walk of approximately 2 miles through & along the Bewdley byways.

The most needed items are NEW underwear, hoodies, joggers/jeans- male and female in small and medium, all ages for children. Also, used unlocked smartphones for PAYG SIM cards. A new study by UNHCR finds mobile phones and internet access is as critical to refugees' safety and security as food, shelter and water. All items will go direct to refugees in camps, courtesy of local charity People in Motion. http://www.people-in-motion.co.uk

Bewdley Festival 2016

A varied programme was well received by our local and regional audience, although ticket sales were down on last year. The Rutles got Festival off to a terrific start and drew fans from far afield; Max Keen gave another great “lecture” to his usual sell-out crowd and Ann Reid’s cabaret was a wonderfully light-hearted and gentle evening of songs and stories from this much-loved actress.

Sunday saw children enjoy Ashley Wass and Matthew Trussler’s performance of Wonderland, narrated for the first time ever by Louis de Bernieres - followed by an exceptionally spirited evening solo piano recital from Ashley Wass themed around the works of Shakespeare.

Stars from television and radio featured again this year. Charlotte Green treated an enraptured audience to readings from her autobiography and tales from behind the scenes at BBC radio, all in that wonderful voice, and TV Historian Kate Williams celebrated the Queen at 90 with an intriguing illustrated talk. The ebullient Andy McConnell, Antiques Roadshow’s expert on glass, leapt from the stage and paced amongst the audience to relate the History of the British Glass Industry, a talk especially prepared for Festival. Andy Kershaw relentlessly worked the stage telling his life story as a DJ, broadcaster and foreign correspondent.

This year’s ‘journey by film’ took a sell-out audience to Milan to study the genius of Leonardo da Vinci. Lucy Adlington and Meridith Towne provided a highly amusing insight into the dramatic changes in women’s fashions that were a direct consequence of WWI. George Egg Anarchist Cook frenetically prepared a three course meal for audience members to sample – but using only the equipment found in a hotel room. Brett Westwood thrilled a sell-out audience with his tales of a Naturalist’s Life with particular reference to the Wyre Forest – another talk prepared especially for Festival. Micro-engineer Graham Short amazed his audience, explaining the physical and mental stresses involved in producing engraved art that can only be viewed under a microscope - and he had engraved Festival’s logo onto the head of a pin especially for the occasion. Comedian Miles Jupp’s sell-out appearance saw him sharing those aspects of life that we all find frustrating and annoying. Lesley Smith portrayed the early years of Margaret Thatcher to another of her sell-out audiences. Judy Tzuke, accompanied by her daughter and two amazingly talented guitarists, delighted her fans with a repertoire of beautifully gentle songs.

Party Night with Our Friends Electric and DJ Chris Martin gave people the chance to dance the night away to the hits of the 80s.

This year’s Festival Church Service was completely transformed to include local voices and local school children singing ‘Tick Tock’ a song especially written by Bewdley composer Jim Ineson.

Bewdley Town Council News November 2016

Town Council Accommodation and Community “Hub” The Town Council are asking residents what they think of a proposal to purchase the former Barclays Bank building in Load Street. The Council would use this as their main offices (as the current office accommodation is too small) and as an accessible meeting space for the community. In the medium/long term the building could serve as a local council information point for residents (including district and county council services), and somewhere for local community groups to showcase their activities and services. Let the Council know what you think by completing the survey on the website at www.bewdleytowncouncil.org. You can also find out more about the proposals on the website under the “Your Council – Consultations” section, or e-mail townclerk@bewdleytowncouncil.org.

Large Vehicles in Bewdley Town Centre The Council are very keen to consider ways in which town centre traffic congestion can be reduced, and ensuring that our Grade I Listed bridge is not put under too much strain. The Council are writing to all businesses in the town centre who use large lorries for deliveries to consider using smaller “feeder” vehicles to service their businesses to limit congestion and help conserve our historic bridge.

Town Council Website The Town Council website is growing! We hope to be able to include details of local businesses, where to stay and eat along with as many local events, shows and talks as possible. If you have an event, business, club or association you would like listed on the website, please e-mail office@bewdleytowncouncil.org.You can take a look at the website at www.bewdleytowncouncil.org.

Town Council Grants This month, the Council agreed to grant £1500 to Bewdley Youth Café, and £500 to All Saints Church who are fitting a new kitchenette. The Council also has a smaller fund available where community groups can apply for help with the costs of putting on events or for general advertising. Grants are available for up to £100 and can be applied for at any time throughout the year. Details can be found on the council’s website as always.

Future Town Council Meetings Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.30pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are: 5th December 2016 and 3rd January 2017. Agendas of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Foyer and by the Library Entrance. All Agendas and Minutes are available on the Town Council’s website www.bewdleytowncouncil.org. 53

December in the Forest

It’s pretty quiet on the farm at the moment. There’s a flock of Wiltshire Horn ewes on an extended visit, minding their own business in the cider orchard hay field. The chickens squawk and mutter occasionally, but one cockerel is definitely quieter than two, and I’ve got used to him leading the hens on cheeky forays over the gate into the flower garden. The boy lambs (wethers) and the two pigs have gone to provide some very tasty dinners, such being their raison d’etre. The cattle herd are cared for by the Wyre Community Land Trust and only occasionally come to Uncllys to munch our grass and have their annual TB test.

This makes life easier for the farmers in the winter months. We have our work cut out for us keeping the house warm by barrowing logs from the woodstores to the stoves, and if there’s a freeze we’ll be getting water to the livestock. Winter is the time for traditional tasks such as pruning, mending fences and machinery and hedgelaying. In the forest itself the last of the leaves are dropping from the oaks. Big drifts of leaves have been on the ground for a month now but are gradually being nibbled away by worms, millipedes, woodlice and suchlike helped by fungi and bacteria, so that their nutrients and organic fibres are added to the woodland soil. Recently I helped to dig out a heap of beech leaf mould (compost) and it was noticeable that, despite having stood for two years, the leaves are still not completely broken down. The leaves of the each tree species will have a slightly different chemical composition and not only show a range of resistance to decomposition but attract a different assemblage of organisms to feed on them. Carbon dioxide is released into the soil as they are broken down, so that there is more in a forest soil than in the column of air above it from ground level to the top of the atmosphere (see Michael Allaby’s Woodland Trust Book of British Woodlands.) This ‘carbon sink’ effect is a very precious attribute of woodlands and one which is reversed when forests are cleared.

Now that the trees are bare we are able to see through them again, and the holly is once more king of the forest with its shiny evergreen leaves and bright red berries. No wonder we use it to brighten our Christmas season! Linda Iles
