The Bridge November 2016

November in the Forest

The wild creatures of the Wyre Forest’s streams are as varied and precious as their dry land counterparts. If you have ever watched a dipper bobbing and diving into the waters of Dowles Brook you will realise that it is finding plenty of food among the rocks and pebbles of the stream bed. This includes the larvae of caddis and stone flies as well as small fish. Take a closer look at a small section of the Brook or one of its tributaries and you may see these small inhabitants for yourself: disturb some stones and you are sure to see the freshwater shrimps (Gammerus pulex – familiar to all students of freshwater ecology), only up to 1cm long but memorable for their frenzied sideways-on swimming motion.

Aquatic wildlife is very sensitive to changes in water quality. In the forest the threats are mainly increase in silt carried from arable fields, and pollution from fertilisers, pesticides, fuel spills and such like. Park Brook, which originates in New Parks and flows into Dowles Brook via Park Pool, has never properly recovered from a pollution incident some 20 years ago.

The native white-clawed crayfish was numerous in these streams and local people recall collecting them for a tasty dinner in the past. They are up to 10cm long and spend the day hiding under rocks and logs, emerging at night to search for food. Norman Hickin (in The natural history of an English Forest) said, “In the Wyre Forest the crayfish is abundant, occurring under almost every likely stone in mid-stream where the flow of water is fastest and clearest”. That was written in 1971, but now they are endangered and populations like that in the Wyre’s streams are monitored carefully. The main factor in their decline is the spread of the American signal crayfish, which escaped from locations where they were bred commercially for food. Far worse than its competition for food is the parasitic fungus it carries (‘Crayfish plague’) which is fatal to its British relative. Sadly the Bell Brook, which flows through Hitterhill Coppice on the south-east side of the forest, appears to have completely lost what was a relatively thriving population this year. The cause of this disappearance is most likely crayfish plague, brought in by accident from waters containing the signal crayfish, so notices have been posted by Natural England asking bikers, walkers and their dogs not to go into the streams and to wash boots, bikes (and dogs!) if they do so that there is no risk of spreading infection further. With luck the native crayfish will be able to recolonise the brook in time.

The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley

It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month Visit us at www.bewdleybridge.org.uk

This month’s thought: just sitting and thinking. That’s actually what the first of my Bridge jobs is, as the beginning of the month draws near. Lucky me; most of us don’t have an excuse just to sit doing nothing. A radio programme last month on Daydreaming pointed out that sitting doing nothing in particular has become tantamount to confessing that you are either quite shockingly lazy or morally corrupt; yet pre-the Industrial Revolution it was quite the thing for intellectuals, rich young ladies and poets. Even the rural poor had time off with a raw turnip and a glass of small ale when they could contemplate the unfairness of the Corn Laws or just sit and watch the pig fatten. Of course, we all know that our long hours and working lunches haven’t increased our output. Of course we all know that wacky American-style offices with hammocks and table tennis equipment encourage creative thought. Yet still we persist in boasting that we haven’t got a minute to ourselves and feel a glow of satisfaction at our industrious lifestyle. At which point I draw nervously back; there are among us people who have no choice in the matter, and I’m not denying that. Nevertheless I want to be helpful; the Bridge always seeks to inform. So here’s my Thought for the Month: Spend ten minutes a day doing some serious Daydreaming. To help you, I have compiled a useful list of things to say when challenged. * The classic. Ineffectual, but a useful entry-level retort. “I was resting my eyes.” * “I was channelling my Healing Chakras.” * “I’ve just realised; it’s the square of theta times e over x.” * “No, I’m not asleep; I was re-imagining the upstairs toilet.” * One that’s useful to silence a bore you can’t get rid of: “Hush! Do you hear those bells of Fairyland?” * and for our younger readers: “I bet Mozart’s mum and dad didn’t tell him to go and do something.” Anyway, I must go. I need to sit down and finish that sonnet I wasn't writing. Margaret

Bewdley’s New Rector

Community News

Following the Rev Keith James’ move to Norwich last year, Bewdley’s parishes of Ribbesford with Bewdley and Wribbenhall have been without a rector. Last month we heard that the Reverend Chris Allen will be installed as Rector on Monday 7th November at St Anne’s Church.

Chris is already well known to people locally, having been an Associate Minister (volunteer) for the past five years in the four churches of the benefice (St Leonard’s Ribbesford; St Anne’s Bewdley; St Andrew’s Button Oak; All Saints Wribbenhall).

Chris was ordained in 1980 and for the past 20 years has worked in community regeneration initiatives – running his own company since 2000 as an adviser to central and local government. Returning to parish ministry has come as a surprise to him.

“I was not looking for a job back in the church – being very content with being a ‘volunteer vicar’ whilst working on community projects. However, as time passed by in the vacancy at church, I began to feel the ‘nudge’ of God (which is the best way I can describe it). For me it was the most fantastic post and I couldn’t understand why clergy were not tripping over each other to live and work in Bewdley and Wribbenhall. I had joked with people that if there weren’t an appointment, I would have to think about applying!

As we continued without a Rector, and I did a few more things as cover, I remembered what an immense privilege it is to walk with people through the happiest and most sad times of their lives. After two failures to appoint, I was convinced of that nudge.

I have been overwhelmed by the way the churches have welcomed the news, and I’ve been getting used to the idea of this immense change of direction for me and our family. My wife Jo is the great support of my life and without her blessing, this could not be.”

During November and December, the Museum will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10am - 4.30pm. Bewdley’s ‘Christmas Lights switch-on’ will be taking place on Saturday 26th November. This year, it will be a Victorian themed event and there will be plenty of live entertainment in the town from midday onwards. The Museum and gift shop will be open all day from 10am - 5pm with the Shambles café offering seasonal favourites. Visitors can browse for unique Christmas Gifts in the Museum shop and resident Craft Studios. The Festive season will continue in the Museum on Sunday 4th December (1pm – 2.15pm) with The Little English Theatre Co’s production of Zorro’s Christmas Adventure. This tells the story of the time when Santa crash lands in Mexico, and it looks like Christmas is going to be cancelled. Fortunately, Santa meets the one and only Zorro and all is well! Tickets for the production are £4 per person and are available from TIC. Father Christmas’s Grotto will be open for business on 17th and 18th December – more details will follow. Further information about ‘What’s on’ at the Museum can be found on our website: www.bewdleymuseum.co.uk or phone 0845 603 5699.

The Museum Shop and TIC will be offering extended opening hours for this Winter Season, when it will be open daily from 10am - 4.30pm. The retail staff have been beavering away, sourcing new stock as we move into the run up to Christmas. There will be lots of Gift ideas for everyone and of course, service with a smile. For enquiries and information, please refer to the website www.visitwyreforest.co.uk or phone 0845 607 7819. The Shop and TIC will be closed throughout January and re-open on Monday 6th February 2017, 10am - 4.30pm.

Bewdley WI is two years old!

We have to admit some trepidation when we set about starting a new WI (Women’s Institute) in our lively, active community with so many long established cultural, educational and charitable organisations. How could a new WI possibly compete and provide interest and entertainment for our busy population of cultivated, intelligent, creative and busy women?

It is, of course, work in progress, but we have tried to achieve variety: our meetings have included talks on local history, ecology and wildlife, a sombre reflection on the Battle of the Somme and the hilarious memoirs of a cartoonist. We have enjoyed demonstrations by a chocolatier, a baker, florists and gardeners and have been on our feet with yoga and rather loud in a percussion workshop. We have a BWI Book Club, which, in collaboration with our wonderful library, has promoted eclectic reading and our Art and Craft group produces memorable pieces – readers may remember the wonderful oak tree design on the medical centre hoardings. The wider WI context is important to us: we have lively debates over Annual Resolutions, and, prompted by the Food Waste Campaign, now have a relationship with a local Food Bank. Perhaps most importantly, we have learned so much from each other. In ‘social’ meetings, members have shared their passions and their skills – cement mixing in Italy, poetry composition, geology… Members participate enthusiastically, suggest new departures creatively, welcome visitors warmly, bake most deliciously. They are everything we are, and we thank them!

Our next meeting is 14 November in St George’s Hall at 7.30, when Janet Ince will start us planning ahead with ideas for Christmas table décor and wreaths. Further ahead, 3 December, same place, same time, a ‘bring and share’ meal with a European Christmas theme. Do join us – visitors are always sure of a warm and friendly welcome.

The Duck Houses

Jubilee Gardens were again enlivened during Bewdley Festival by the presence of over forty splendid duck houses.

They varied from the witty to the beautiful and attracted lots of attention from visitors.

As we go to press, we don’t know the winner but all the entrants deserve our thanks for having provided us with lots to look at and admire.

Wyre Forest Repair Café November 19th 10a.m. - 2p.m. in St. George’s Hall. Pre-Christmas Special – Christmas lights

Transition Bewdley continue to run the Repair Café where people can bring their broken, damaged or torn household and personal items for repair advice or repair free of charge.

In November we are encouraging people to get their Christmas lights out of the loft and bring them along to the Repair Café where our volunteers can safety-check them. How frustrating it is for most families when they get out the lights which worked perfectly the previous year, only to find they don't work now - many people give up and rush to the shops to buy a new set. It actually doesn't take long to identify the duff bulbs, and we can advise people where to buy replacements and the correct voltage/wattage etc as many types are available on line. At the same time we will check the plug, fuse, power pack, wiring etc and apply a PAT test.

The new venue at St. George’s Hall has convenient car-parking nearby and has enabled people to bring larger heavier items for repair. Its proximity to the library and shops has resulted in more people dropping in. Visitors have been enjoying delicious coffee, home made cakes and a chat with other Repair Café customers in The Hall Café while they wait. Whatever it is, if it's broken, you are welcome to bring it along and our volunteer repairers will have a go or at least provide advice about what your best course of action might be. Repairs are free, but we encourage donations to ensure we can keep running the Repair Café in future. Free. For more details contact John Rhymer at john.rhymer50@gmail.com 01299 403424

Saving Children’s Lives By Growing Chilli Peppers

Community News

One of the Bewdley Baptist Church Members, Sue Hutson, is planning to visit Rukungiri, Uganda next year, as a volunteer to work with the Chilli Children Trust. This trust is a Christian charity working to improve the lives of thousand of orphans and disabled children. The name Chilli Children is given because families registered with the project are taught to grow Chilli Peppers for sale, which gives them a means of self-reliance. In order to visit Rukungiri Sue Hutson must raise £5000. She hopes to do this by “Swimming The Channel” - in the new Kidderminster Leisure Centre ! Sue will carry out the swim over a period of 12 weeks, while still carrying out her duties as a Special Needs Carer in a local home. The Chilli Children Trust supports a project for children with disabilities in Rukungiri, Uganda. This Project was set up in 1995 by the North Kigezi Diocese of the Church of Uganda as a Christian response to the problems faced by orphaned and disabled children and their families. It provides support for parents and carers, and teaches them to help their child

More details can be found on the WWW by going to: CHILLI CHILDREN TRUST. Donations towards Sue’s visit to Uganda can be forwarded to: Mission Direct 27 Bury Road, Hitchin. SG5 1RT. Registered charity: 1107824

Community News

Bewdley Development Trust (BDT) is a Community Interest Company that exists to support the communities in Bewdley. BDT aims to help to make Bewdley an even better place to live, work and visit.

BDT’s proudest achievement has been its leading role in the refurbishment of St George’s Hall, with which it remains involved. In recent years BDT has also set up a number of events and activities such as the Local Produce Market, Spring and Harvest Fairs and the town’s website. BDT has taken the decision to continue these activities through our partners, particularly Bewdley Town Council and Wyre Forest District Council, and to take a different approach to supporting the town.

BDT is looking to appoint new Directors to help us to shape and develop our new role. As with our current Directors, we prefer our new Directors to live and/or work in Bewdley. We are keen to extend the range of skills and experience around the Board table, especially in the areas of regeneration, communications, media and community development. We would also like to increase the diversity of the Board and would welcome interest from women and young people.

If you would like to find out more about BDT with a view to applying to become a Director, please contact BDT’s Chairman, Jacky Griffin, at admin@bewdley.org.uk. We are planning to review applications on 28 November 2016.

Collections for Refugees

Clothing collections to support refugees in camps in France and beyond are currently being taken at All Saints’ Church. Collections will be taken at St. Anne's Church between 17th-20th November and 8th-11th December in marked boxes.

The most needed items are NEW underwear, hoodies, joggers/jeans- male and female in small and medium, all ages for children. Also, used unlocked smartphones for PAYG SIM cards.

A new study by UNHCR finds mobile phones and internet access is as critical to refugees' safety and security as food, shelter and water. Smartphones will go to children in Calais before the dismantling of the camp so they can remain in contact with charities. 100 children went missing the last time parts of the camp were dismantled. All items will go direct to refugees in camps, courtesy of local charity People in Motion. 35

Letter to the Editor

Loved your article in The Bridge. Never been to Bewdley but it sounds like it smells incredible.

I had a consultation with my housemates about our top eight evocative pleasant smells, here's what we wafted up between us. 8) Freshly cooked bread. Those Saturday mornings by the bakery that we lived above.

7) The dying embers of the sugar beet factory in Kidderminster.

6) A new book.

5) Reheated pies at a football game.

4) Petrol's nice, isn't it?

3) Cough medicine, just the smell of it is enough to transport me back to the deliciously numb bubble within which I spent three years of my youth. 2) Freshly printed paper. Handing in the final draft of your first novel.

1) The first spread of manure on the fields. Childhoods playing on the leisure centre park.

Really enjoyed your list, hope you enjoyed ours, too! Yours smellingly, Hugh

Logs to burn

Logs to burn, logs to burn, Logs to save the coal a turn Here’s a word to make you wise, When you hear the woodman’s cries. Never heed his usual tale, That he has good logs for sale, But read these lines and really learn the proper kind of logs to burn. OAK logs will warm you well, If they’re old and dry. LARCH logs of pine wood smell, But the sparks will fly. BEECH logs for Christmas time, YEW logs heat well. SCOTCH logs it is a crime For anyone to sell.

BIRCH logs will burn too fast, CHESTNUT scarce at all. HAWTHORN logs are good to last, If you cut them in the fall. HOLLY logs will burn like wax You should burn them green ELM logs like smouldering flax No flame to be seen PEAR logs and APPLE logs, They will scent your room. CHERRY logs across the dogs, Smell like flowers in bloom. But ASH logs, all smooth and grey, Burn them green or old; Buy up all that come your way, They’re worth their weight in gold. 43

Chestnuts Roasting

Readers may remember Heather and Alan Fairs’ tea-time entertainment, The Folks Who Live on the Hill, back in January, which raised the huge sum of nearly £3,500 for the Save the Children Fund. They’re doing it again (or something very much like it but with a pre-Christmas flavour) to raise funds for the Friends of Hartlebury Castle.

There will be a ‘Vintage Afternoon Tea with Music’ at Hartlebury Castle on Sunday 4th December at 2.30pm. (NB earlier time). Tickets are £12.50, available from the Hartlebury Castle Box Office, or by telephone on 01299 250416 (11 am until 4.30 pm).

Bewdley Traders’ Association

Community News

The Bewdley Traders’ Association is being reformed in order to contribute towards the development of our town. We believe there is an urgent need to come together to consider how the town can plan to attract in new businesses, provide a positive welcome to visitors, and develop the local economy. The annual subscription will be £20, which then gives traders access to a range of support services from the Hereford and Worcester Chamber of Commerce. The Association is also being supported by the Town Council and the Towns Centre Manager. For more details contact either

Dave Carr (dave@bewdleybrewery.co.uk) 01299-405148, or Revd Chris Allen (chris.allen@compass.uk.net) 07956 303037.

Bewdley Town Council News November 2016

Victorian Christmas in Bewdley – 26th November 2016 Plans for the Victorian Christmas in Bewdley are well under way. This year, there will be a “Main Stage” in Load Street where a variety of great acts will perform, including Rattlesnake Jake, Tenuto and Bewdley Concert Band. Load Street will have a selection of catering stalls selling tasty seasonal treats, and the shops will be encouraged to stay open longer so you can stock up on Christmas presents while you listen to the music. The main market will be in the Load Street car park, and along Severnside North and South. Do come along in your best Victorian outfit! Don’t forget that the only place to keep up to date with this event is on the Town Council website at www.bewdleytowncouncil.org

Welch Gate Air Quality Management Area The Town Council considered a report from Councillor Anna Coleman calling for the District Council to provide public car parking on the Wribbenhall side of the river. This would alleviate pressure on the bridge, and reduce traffic congestion in the town centre, and particularly in Welch Gate where nitrogen dioxide levels are too high. This would involve identifying a suitable site and making sure that people can either walk into the town centre from the car park, or even consider a park and ride type circular town bus service.

Town Council Website The Town Council website is growing! We hope to be able to include details of local businesses, where to stay and eat along with as many local events, shows and talks as possible. If you have an event, business, club or association you would like listed on the website, please e-mail office@bewdleytowncouncil.org. You can take a look at the website at www.bewdleytowncouncil.org.

Millennium Green The Millennium Green in Shaw Hedge Road used to be looked after by a small team of volunteers from the local community. This group is no longer able to care for the Green and it is simply mowed and tidied every month or so. The Town Council would like to know what people might like to see on the Green, whether this is to leave it as it is, turn it into a more formal park/garden or even allotments. Let us know what you think by e-mailing office@bewdleytowncouncil.org Future Town Council Meetings Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.30pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are: 7th November 2016 and 5th December 2016. Agendas of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Foyer and by the Library Entrance. All Agendas and Minutes are available on the Town Council’s website www.bewdleytowncouncil.org. 53
