The Bridge July 2016

July in the Forest

I’ve been thinking about numbers: both abundances and absences. In the Wyre Forest of course we have both. It’s an area celebrated for its variety of wildlife, which it owes to having a diversity of habitats in sufficient quantities (areas) to be of benefit to large numbers of organisms. You’ll also hear that, for instance, it has populations of Pearl Bordered Fritillaries or Dormice or Wood Ants which are of national significance. The ants you can see in large numbers as you walk through the woods on a warm day, but most of the forest wildlife is by no means numerous. Even the bluebells, picked in armfuls in years gone by, must be sought out by a special trip to Shrawley Woods where they are as extensive as ever.

A few weeks ago I saw huge drifts of toad tadpoles in the reservoir and by the end of the month these will be heading off into the forest in droves after growing front legs and losing their tails. If you are lucky or persistent enough to visit the area on the right days you will witness an amazing mass migration. Sadly, the forest’s reptiles do not share this breeding success. The adder, particularly, is suffering a serious decline for reasons not fully understood. Persecuted in the past, the current reduction in numbers is more likely to be linked with disturbance from the curious. They are extremely shy and prefer to keep to familiar hibernation and basking sites rather than dispersing to new areas, which makes them very vulnerable. Nearly all the forest’s wildlife benefits from a style of woodland management which produces a patchwork of habitats on a fairly small scale: a ‘mosaic’ approach. Over the past two decades more open spaces and heaths have been encouraged, coppicing has been reintroduced and the forest ride edges have been scalloped while mowing is varied in height and frequency. Bare earth, short grass, long grass, shrubs, small and large trees all have their place in the jigsaw. Maintaining such variety should help to provide a place for everything although there is so much more to learn about the myriad of organisms that inhabit the forest and their individual requirements.

At Uncllys Farm we are well-placed to experiment with woodland management systems and try to halt the decline in woodland birds seen nationally. But think about this: I walked through our top meadow this morning, full of buttercups, pignuts, clovers and various grasses in flower but saw no insects until I reached the top gate into the woods. A disappearance of that scale so far down the food chain would be very worrying and I hope the insects will show up in good numbers as the summer goes on.

Matters agricultural have been on my mind recently. We live in a town, yes; we also live in a not-very-large town surrounded by rather lovely countryside. I’m blessed with a view across the valley so there’s agricultural excitement to be had as I watch the field in the distance become green with the spring grass; yellow when it’s cut for silage; dark grey when the farmer does his muck-spreading, and back to lush green. I know, I know; my life is pretty much spent in the slow lane.

Then there are the agricultural encounters when I walk the tiny lanes. Sometimes I’m photographing signposts for another “Where did I go?” article, but more often because it’s just a marvellous way to spend a couple of hours. Because I have some walks I repeat quite often, I have a nodding acquaintance with several farmers with whom I chew the fat for a few minutes. It is often been a pretty educational few minutes. For instance, I can tell you several mildly unusual things about hedge-laying; how many forms you have to fill in when a cow calves; how long the gestation period for a sheep is; and why black grass (which isn’t black) is a scourge on its way to us from East Anglia. I was particularly thrilled to be shown a pedigree Shorthorn bull the other day who, his owner told me, was bellowing so loudly because his harem was in the next field. One of his offspring had been born just two hours earlier and I was able to see a small ball of white curls trying to master the technique of getting all four feet to support him.

Now you can see why I was particularly pleased to get an email to editorial@bewdleybridge.org.uk from Matt Greene, the herdsman at Grey Green Farm. You can read his article on p23. I’ve actually been to call on Wribbenhall Integrity Bosma (she allowed me to call her Bos for short) and she’s a very dignified cow indeed. I told her that she was the cover girl for July; she inclined her head to indicate her recognition that it was an entirely proper tribute.

I hope we have the weather to enjoy more of the July countryside.

The Big Friendly Read

Teachers and children rejoice! It's that time of year‌AGAIN!

The Summer Reading Challenge will be upon us shortly, starting on Saturday 16th July. Some of you will already know the ropes for the SRC; for those of you who don't, it's a reading challenge taking place over the summer for children aged 4 to 11. Sign up for the challenge, read six books over the summer holidays (they can be any book from the library) and when you've read all six you will get an invitation to an SRC ceremony where you will receive a medal and a certificate. There will be stickers to collect and various freebies handed out along the way.

This is an extra special year as the Reading Agency has decided to choose the theme 'The Big Friendly Read' in honour of the centenary of the birth of children's favourite Roald Dahl. We have several new copies of Dahl's books in our children's area, although you can choose any book you like to complete your challenge. Two books may be counted towards your challenge per library visit.

Note to parents: research has proved that reading over the long summer holiday dramatically increases the chance of children performing well on their return to school in the autumn. PS It's free to take part!

16th July until 11th September Bewdley Museum Those of us from St Anne’s Church who have been working on the exhibition, Tower to Town, have been working hard but also learning a great deal in the process. Some of us have been hearing from people with stories to tell. It is humbling not only to hear these moving stories but also to see how down the years they still have the power to move the descendants of long-gone great-grandfathers, in some cases to tears. Some of us have handled the crumpled sepia photos so that we can photocopy them - they are too valuable to be taken to the museum and are often too tiny to see clearly unless they can be held. Some of us have been collecting up such articles as kitbags from WW2 and tiny bibles given to soldiers in the first world war. They will be displayed in cabinets. Another person is writing to newspapers and to the BBC to see if they would like to come and see what we are doing. Oh, and I have had fun doing the artwork with a great deal of help from museum staff and friendly graphic artists. I hope our readers will like what we have all done and come along to see it. I don’t think you will be disappointed. Margaret Ashmore

Guide Dogs

This great photograph of the three puppies being 'walked' in Bewdley was taken in May, a few days before Jeanette (the pale pup) went into training. News from her trainer is that she is already wearing her training harness, is keen to work and making great progress. Well done to Roni and family.

Both Roni and Fran are 'first time walkers' and doing tremendous work with the pups.

'Little' Delphi, is 7 months and a 'little' star! She is well socialised with other dogs, enjoying her 'free runs' and training walks, puppy classes and living with Fran (whose husband took the photograph).

Isla is now approaching her first birthday, has settled down (was a very lively pup!) and is responding well to her training, after being unwell for a while.

Yashka, who went into training in January, has now been 'matched' with a19 year old in the Nottingham area; she is totally blind and Yashka will be her first Guide Dog. If all goes well they will 'qualify' soon and Yashka will be a working dog.

Our thanks again go to the good folk of Bewdley who donated just over £200 at the June street collection.

We are out and about all the time; do ask your questions. Look at the guidedog.org. uk site for information and please continue to support the charity in whatever way you can. Thank you. Gabi 19

I was born in Singapore, and spent a couple of years in Burma - I was too tiny to remember any of that; then to India, of which I remember bits - chiefly its garden and gardener in Umballah and nanny in Bombay. When I was seven, my father was posted to Abu Sueir near Lake Timsah in Egypt’s Canal Zone, but as we were on an RAF station, none of it was particularly Egyptian. In India, I suppose we were in a sort of European/Air Force ring, which would block out a lot of Indianness. The nanny, Lucy (that can’t have been her real name) was lovely. I can’t remember her telling me any special stories, but I do remember going out with her to the nearby park, filled with palm trees in my mind. We could watch the monkeys there, and they would plague us a bit for the illicit sweets we had there! India has a special place in my heart, despite its size and my lack of any further visits; a lot of it may be due to my avid reading and re-reading of Kipling’s “Kim”. “Going up to Simla” - now called Shimla - was also part of being in Bombay; the green of it, the rolling (in comparison with the sea-fronted Bombay) landscape - lovely. Here’s the poem I wrote about those years. Jane Morton Mahim Park With Nanny, Bombay

Somewhere in mind’s eye these trunks took on a look of smooth grey beech, reorganised their girth from memory’s cocktail. randomly. But it’s always warm there, and the light slants, ochre, spotted with insects, through flame-flowered trees...

And mind’s eye’s there, now, in those woods where monkeys rush and scatter, gibber, swing down, pounce on the rainbow trays of bowlegged men who shout and beat them off, then cry again the virtues of their gaudy sweets.

The urban jungle swallows up the sounds. In the green calm, Lucy looks down at me. She smiles. Out from her sari come the coins, and hand in hand, illicitly, we choose our sugar shots, lime green and shocking pink. We bite, we suck and crunch.

The syrup blends with the astounding scent of spice and dung focussed in this palm-grove, that yet, somehow, packages like gift-wrap, the city of Bombay. 23

Wishing Wribbenhall Integrity Bosma a very Happy Retirement!

Many of us dream of spending our retirement in the glorious English Countryside, but how many of us actually get to live out this dream?

The lucky ladies who retire from service at Graingers Farm in Bewdley get to live that dream in the peaceful fields looking over Wribbenhall. The latest addition to the retired community is 18 year old Wribbenhall Integrity Bosma. Born on Crundalls Farm in 1994, she has had a marvellous career at Graingers. During her service at the Farm on Grey Green Lane, she has given over 100 tonnes of milk and is mother to 12 calves, 4 of whom are following in their mothers hoofsteps and are milking in the current herd.

Wribbenhall Integrity Bosma has a fabulous personality and has been a fantastic member of the team at the farm. Whilst she is only moving into the ‘retirement village’ at the rear of the farm, she will be missed in the milking parlour. Her bovine and human friends and colleagues at the farm would like to thank her for her years of good service and wish her a very Happy Retirement.

New Bewdley Medical Centre

Work on the new Bewdley Medical Centre is gathering pace and we will be moving into the new building on Friday 22 July 2016. So the massive task of packing up one medical centre and moving it all into the new building is under way. Although we hope to keep any inconvenience for patients to a minimum, there will inevitably be some disruption whilst we move buildings. Because of the huge task of re-locating the surgery, all its systems and the team, the medical team will be providing urgent services only on Friday 22 July and Monday 25 July; so please think about ordering your repeat medication early, if they would usually be due around that time. All the staff are very excited at the prospect of our new home and welcoming our patients into this wonderful new facility, where we can continue to provide high quality patient care, along with new services and facilities. So please bear with all the staff during this time. If you do have any concerns or questions, please email:- bmcinfo@nhs.net All the telephone numbers for appointments, repeat prescriptions, etc will be the same in the new building.

Friends of Riverside North Park

Community News

At our meeting held on Wednesday 8th June 2016 at the Bowling Club we were fortunate in being able to welcome several new faces who had come along to register their concerns over the proposed ‘Wild About the Pond’ project. You may be aware that we failed to gain a Biffa award to finance the project but every cloud has a silver lining, and new voices and opinions mean that together we can achieve the best balance of ideas as we move forward to protect and improve our park. A full ecology report was included in the original costings for the project and it has been suggested that we could use some newly acquired funds to bring this forward. We have managed to obtain a stand at Bewdley Carnival where we will be selling plants and giving out leaflets to raise awareness of the ‘Friends’ group. As always the minutes of the meetings can be viewed on our website at www.friendsofriversidenporthpark We also have a Facebook page ‘Friends of Riverside North Park’.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday 13th July 7pm at the Bowling Club, Riverside North and every following second Wednesday of the month to October.

Please come along and give us your ideas, suggestions and support so we have a fair and balanced outcome for YOUR park. Mac Chamberlain Chairman

Thank you to all those who supported our recent fundraising Afternoon Garden Party enjoyed in a beautiful Kidderminster garden in aid of the SIGBI Federation’s Meru Women’s Garden Project. This will support some of the poorest women-led households in Kenya. The profits from the garden party together with a very generous donation from our honorary member we will enable us to send a cheque for £500. Whilst there will be our usual Business Meeting on 7th July, instead of the regular Supper/Speaker meeting there will be a club outing to Uncllys Farm, Ruskinland, Wyre Forest on that evening. Visitors welcome to our regular Club meetings are on first and third Thursday each month. Bewdley Museum and Tourist Information Centre

After lots of preparation and planning over the past few months, the ‘One Grain’ Brass Foundry research project will finally be launched. From 1st July to 31st July, there will be experts, staff and volunteer researchers, at various times, in the research room. The ‘One Grain’ brass apothecary weight, which was made in the Foundry, will be the starting point, with the research branching along many lines and going off on tangents. We would like as many Museum visitors, members of the public and local residents as possible to come along, meet artist Joshua Sofaer, help with the research and take part in activities with experts on hand. If you require further information, are interested in lending an hour of your time to the research project or have any information to offer, please contact Sharon.Harvey@wyreforestdc.gov.uk .

New exciting temporary exhibitions which start mid-July include ‘Geology at different scales’ in which textile artist Georgia Jacobs will display works inspired by microscopic geology samples. In the Wyre Forest Gallery, ‘Tower to Town’ will show objects and stories from Bewdley Townspeople which answer the question ‘Why did you buy a poppy for the Tower of London installation (Blood swept lands and seas of red)?’ The annual Cherry Fair will take place during the weekend of 23rd and 24th July. There will be food and drink, music in the gardens, traditional crafts and other family activities.

The TIC Shop now offers a wider selection of Maps, Books, local produce and Gifts. Please come along and browse; staff are here to help and advise. Remember that discounted tickets are available for West Midlands Safari Park and Severn Valley Railway. For enquiries and information, please refer to the website www.visitwyreforest.co.uk or phone 0845 607 7819.

A Visitor To Bewdley’ Parish Church

Community News

On May Day this year my husband and I visited the historic church of St. Anne at the very heart of Bewdley. My husband is Welsh and I am Irish but we live in Northern Ireland. This was the second time that we had visited this area but it was the first time that we had happened upon the church being open. The church is the centrepiece of Bewdley and nobody could fail to notice its imposing and central position at the top of the town.

We entered into the peace, tranquility and silence of the church through a small, humble side door rather than an impressive frontage which would definitely have been more fitting for an introductory portico to such a magnificent and ancient establishment. It was as if we had entered a little quiet haven of peace away from the bustle and the rain that marked the busy May Day celebrations outside.

The two ladies who were there were very friendly and provided us with a potted history of the church dedicated to St. Anne. As I am called Anne and my daughter's birthday is on 25 March which is Lady Day I was very interested in knowing more. My name was chosen for me primarily because Anne is the mother of Our Lady and also secondarily as my mother had a particular devotion to that saint and she had an inscription to St. Anne etched into the inner circle of her wedding ring. St. Anne is a saint who has always been very dear to me. The church is well worth a visit and like us you may feel that you have stepped back in time and that your feeble prayers of supplication are joined with all the others who have knelt there and prayed fervently and faithfully to God throughout the ages. Many, many prayers must have been answered or unanswered in the course of time and history within those august and hallowed walls.

We ended our visit with a friendly chat and a cup of tea in the foyer and were invited to sign the Visitors' Book to record our presence on that day. It was a very interesting and charming experience and wonderful to see an ancient church alive and worshipping and welcoming new Christians and visitors throughout the many centuries of its existence at the heart of Bewdley's town centre.

Cherry Fair 2016

Community News

Bewdley’s unique annual Cherry Fair will be held at the Museum on Saturday 23rd July and Sunday 24th July from 10am until 4.30pm each day. This is a free family event with something for everyone.

The Museum staff have arranged various stalls and events, with a cherry theme, throughout the museum and gardens. It is hoped that the whole occasion will set off the holiday season with an informative and enjoyable time.

The display in the foyer of the Guild Hall will show visitors a number of different varieties of cherry, gathered from local sources, (depending on the season). These can be compared and, while stocks last, tasted. Alongside will be a collection of young trees to buy. Trees of old varieties of cherry and also some modern varieties will be for sale at a very reasonable price. These have been grafted on to medium and dwarf stocks which will develop trees suitable for gardens. Trees will also be a convenient size to carry home.

Sixty years ago Bewdley was the centre for a flourishing cherry trade and with a 200 year tradition of an annual Cherry Fair since at least 1817. So we hope that people may learn of former times, appreciate the different colours and tastes and textures of these delicious fruits, and support our efforts to rescue the old varieties of cherries before they disappear.

Bewdley Town Council - News

Bewdley Mayor 2016/2017 During the Annual Meeting of Bewdley Town Council on Friday 13th May 2016, Councillor John Beeson was elected Mayor for 2016/2017. Councillor Beeson has said he is looking forward to a busy year in his new role with the completion of the neighbourhood plan, new markets and events and continuing to enhance and provide local services. Councillor Beeson will raise funds for the Citizens Advice Bureau during his mayoral year, as well as a community group fund which Bewdley based charities and community groups will be encouraged to apply to. During the meeting, Councillor Philip Edmundson was also elected as Deputy Mayor for the second year. Neighbourhood Plan Update Thanks to all residents who have completed the questionnaire. Some interesting headlines have come from the results including the desire to protect our green belt and open spaces, preserve our heritage and provide for more affordable housing. The survey has been re-opened due to the demand from people who missed the original closing date which will allow results to be gathered from a larger demographic. Go to www.beinbewdley.org to complete the questionnaire. Please don’t forget that this Plan will guide the future of the town for you and your family so it is important that views are gathered from as many members of the community as possible. New face at Bewdley Town Council The Council have recently appointed a Community Engagement and Events Officer on a part time basis to help the Council with a number of community focussed projects including co-ordinating our town events and markets, producing the community emergency plan, rolling out the Young Mayor scheme and enhancing our relationships with local organisations, residents and businesses. If you have any suggestions about how the Council can more effectively engage with our communities, please get in touch via our website at www.bewdleytowncouncil.org Closure of Podiatry Unit at Bewdley Medical Centre The Council were very concerned that a vital local service will not be available in the new medical centre. Podiatry services will only be available on a private basis, meaning that patients who cannot afford private fees would need to travel elsewhere. The Council were led to believe that the new centre would be such a wonderful asset to the community and are very concerned that services are being taken away. A letter was to be sent to the partners to express these concerns. Future Town Council Meetings Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.30pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are: 4th July and 1st August 2016. Agendas of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Foyer and by the Library Entrance. All Agendas and Minutes are available on the Town Council’s website www.bewdleytowncouncil.org. 53
