by Aston Martin Beverly Hills and Watch Rapport at the iconic Greystone Mansion. They were joined by over 350 members, esteemed guests and local colleagues as City of Beverly Hills Mayor Bob Wunderlich delivered the annual State of the City Address.

Guests were greeted by two luxurious Aston Martin vehicles, as the evening kicked off with a beautiful reception featuring electric violinist courtesy of Artists Creating Entertainment and impeccable hors d’oeuvres and drinks provided by Il Fornaio and beverage providers. Thanks to Watch Rapport, our guests enjoyed the craft of handmade Cuban Cigars.

On stage, Chamber President & CEO, Todd Johnson began with a welcome message and special thank you to our sponsors. He then introduced the honorable City of Beverly Hills Mayor Bob Wunderlich.

Mayor Wunderlich’s State of the City Address thanked his family and community. It’s 2021 and if your idea of a grand philanthropic bash still entails maskless embraces and hand-passed hors d’oeuvres, then you’ve likely hitched yourself a ride on a SpaceX mission to another planet, since the rest of us have spent nearly the past two years toasting virtual martinis from behind a Zoom screen.

While homebodies like myself have not missed the temporary disappearance of large gatherings, the same cannot be said for others, namely, the illustrious group of 65 women that make up Women’s Guild CedarsSinai. After all, it is by way of hosting grand events that the Women’s Guild is largely able to raise valuable funds for Cedars-Sinai. (Over the past 60plus years, they have raised over $60 million for the hospital.) So then, what becomes of the classic fundraiser when the entire world is turned upside down by a decidedly spikey, massively sinister virus? Well, for the women of the Women’s Guild, it meant a hard pivot (and many, in Manolos, no less).

As President of the Women’s Guild, Shelley Cooper, a former Hollywood publicist (and, full disclosure: my stepmother), was faced with the formidable task of helming the ship in a time when it was hardly safe to leave our homes, much less gather for

a good cause. But, as evidenced by all that the Guild achieved in the past year and a half, Cooper and her crew refused to quit.

Only a couple of years ago, I likely would not have appreciated what a massive challenge a complete cessation of social events would pose to the Women’s Guild. But in 2019, Shelley invited me to the organization’s annual black-tie gala at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. Preferring to be of service in other less public ways, I initially politely declined. Yet, ever the publicist, Shelley had a hook: she told me that my favorite childhood band, Wilson Philips, would be playing a live set, and iconic fashion designer, Betsy Johnson, fresh out of open-heart surgery at Cedars-Sinai, would be in attendance. And now, so would I. I traded my salvaged denim for a silk dress, my Birkenstocks for a borrowed Birken bag and proceeded to learn a thing or two about the incredible work these women were doing. As I sat at my assigned seat nibbling from a communal plate of See’s Candies (if these were the appetizers, I was definitely in), I saw with my own eyes the value in hosting and attending these glamourous galas and elaborate luncheons. These events are essential to raising the money necessary to fund

innovative healthcare treatments and life-saving programs for the hospital.

Unsurprisingly, their philanthropic work is not new. Ever since a small circle of 18 dedicated women—many the wives of studio heads and actors—came together in 1957, an enormous sum of the hospital’s most essential research and services has been the direct result of monies raised by the Women’s Guild.

In the ensuing years, the Women’s Guild has raised over $60 million for CedarsSinai that enabled them to establish the eponymously named Endowed Chairs in Women’s Heart Health and Gastroenterology, the Lung Institute, the Simulation Center for Advanced Clinical Skills, the Saul and Joyce Brandman Breast Center at the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute, and now, their current campaign, the Women’s Guild Neurology Project.

Not to mention, at the height of the pandemic in 2020, the Guild raised over $100,000 to provide gift cards to 4,500 Cedars-Sinai healthcare workers as a thank you for their courageous and relentless efforts in the battle against COVID-19.

It’s 2021 and if your idea of a grand philanthropic bash still entails maskless embraces and hand-passed hors d’oeuvres, then you’ve likely hitched yourself a ride on a SpaceX mission to another planet, since the rest of us have spent nearly the past two years toasting virtual martinis from behind a Zoom screen.

While homebodies like myself have not missed the temporary disappearance of large gatherings, the same cannot be said for others, namely, the illustrious group of 65 women that make up Women’s Guild CedarsSinai. After all, it is by way of hosting grand events that the Women’s Guild is largely able to raise valuable funds for Cedars-Sinai. (Over the past 60plus years, they have raised over $60 million for the hospital.) So then, what becomes of the classic fundraiser when the entire world is turned upside down by a decidedly spikey, massively sinister virus? Well, for the women of the Women’s Guild, it meant a hard pivot (and many, in Manolos, no less).

As President of the Women’s Guild, Shelley Cooper, a former Hollywood publicist (and, full disclosure: my stepmother), was faced with the formidable task of helming the ship in a time when it was hardly safe to leave our homes, much less gather for

a good cause. But, as evidenced by all that the Guild achieved in the past year and a half, Cooper and her crew refused to quit.

Only a couple of years ago, I likely would not have appreciated what a massive challenge a complete cessation of social events would pose to the Women’s Guild. But in 2019, Shelley invited me to the organization’s annual black-tie gala at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. Preferring to be of service in other less public ways, I initially politely declined. Yet, ever the publicist, Shelley had a hook: she told me that my favorite childhood band, Wilson Philips, would be playing a live set, and iconic fashion designer, Betsy Johnson, fresh out of open-heart surgery at Cedars-Sinai, would be in attendance. And now, so would I. I traded my salvaged denim for a silk dress, my Birkenstocks for a borrowed Birken bag and proceeded to learn a thing or two about the incredible work these women were doing. As I sat at my assigned seat nibbling from a communal plate of See’s Candies (if these were the appetizers, I was definitely in), I saw with my own eyes the value in hosting and attending these glamourous galas and elaborate luncheons. These events are essential to raising the money necessary to fund

innovative healthcare treatments and life-saving programs for the hospital.

Unsurprisingly, their philanthropic work is not new. Ever since a small circle of 18 dedicated women—many the wives of studio heads and actors—came together in 1957, an enormous sum of the hospital’s most essential research and services has been the direct result of monies raised by the Women’s Guild.

In the ensuing years, the Women’s Guild has raised over $60 million for CedarsSinai that enabled them to establish the eponymously named Endowed Chairs in Women’s Heart Health and Gastroenterology, the Lung Institute, the Simulation Center for Advanced Clinical Skills, the Saul and Joyce Brandman Breast Center at the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute, and now, their current campaign, the Women’s Guild Neurology Project.

Not to mention, at the height of the pandemic in 2020, the Guild raised over $100,000 to provide gift cards to 4,500 Cedars-Sinai healthcare workers as a thank you for their courageous and relentless efforts in the battle against COVID-19.

Hosting lavish luncheons and formal dinners, however, were not the Women’s Guild original fundraisers. In fact, Women’s Guild initially began with hosting movie premieres in the late 1950s, followed by a decade of opening night galas for the Los Angeles Antiques Show, and onto stylish luncheons honoring Women of Achievement including Donna Karan, Arianna Huffington, Judge Judy Sheindlin, and Christina Applegate. Glamourous dinners followed celebrating the likes of Vera & Paul Guerin, Judy & Bernie Briskin, Wendy & Leonard Goldberg, Billy Crystal, Lyn & Norman Lear, Marc & Jane Nathanson and Lauren Shuler Donner & Dick Donner.

Then, on November 3rd, 2021, after being apart for far too long, the Women’s Guild threw their first in-person event since the pandemic reared its ugly head. Held on the third floor outdoor terrace of The Maybourne Hotel Beverly Hills, Hollywood Icon Danny Devito was honored as well as Women’s Guild Humanitarian Award recipient Barbara Herman, whose mother was a founding member. The talented Pia Toscano sang her heart out while comedian and actor Bob Saget emceed the incredible night—all in an effort to raise money for the Neurology Project—a $7 million commitment to raise money for developing treatments and cures for disorders from migraines and dementia to Alzheimers, MS and ALS. Needless to say, the “Party on the Piazza” made up for some seriously lost time.

Of all of the finer things in life, the ladies of Women’s Guild have long understood that the greatest wealth is—you guessed it—health. And for that very reason, they spend countless hours each and every day working to provide the financial scaffolding necessary to render CedarsSinai both the leading hospital in our community and a world-renowned health institute.

Attend any Women’s Guild event, and you’ll quickly see for yourself that if any single group of women has the power to enact positive change in the world, it is this one.

And you better believe they’ll do it in style.

“I cherish being an active member of Women’s Guild for over 50 years. I cherish that during my four plus years as president, my goal was to enhance Women’s Guild as a leading fund raiser for Cedars-Sinai, and as an iconic organization in the Medical Center’s universe. I brought, helped create and spearheaded The Los Angeles Antiques Show as our primary funding vehicle. It required two years and numerous trips to San Francisco to establish Women’s Guild’s partnership with the Antique Dealers. For the 11-year run of our show, and especially for its time, the event raised an unprecedented average of one million dollars annually. I am so very proud of what we accomplished.”

SHELLEY COOPER WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING EXPERIENCE SO FAR WHILE BEING PRESIDENT OF THE WOMEN’S GUILD? “During the beginning of my tenure, we launched our latest venture, the Women’s Guild Neurology Project. It is a five year, $7 million project that raises funds to find cures, conduct clinical trials and find effective treatment for such neurological diseases and disorders as migraines, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis, dementia and migraines. I and Women’s Guild approved funding it so fast because it has the possibility of enhancing so many lives. There isn’t anyone who isn’t in some way, touched by its mission.

The other incredibly meaningful moment for me during my presidency is back in 2020, at the beginning of the COVID pandemic. Cedars-Sinai was overrun and overwhelmed with patients. In the course of one week, our Women’s Guild raised over $100,000 to buy $100 gift cards for hospital health care workers – nurses, technicians, cleaning crews, security workers and car attendants. Our Board appealed to the better angels of our nature bringing these essential workers a glimmer of sunshine during those darkest days.”

PARY MOSENIFAR WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO BECOME A MEMBER AND HOW HAS IT IMPACTED YOUR LIFE? “One of our close friends, Judy Briskin, played a major role in this, and I’m so grateful.

The holiday season is the most magical time of the year in Beverly Hills. For over half a century, Santa's sleigh and reindeer flying over the City have heralded the season. It’s become a wonderful tradition shared by generations of families.

Originally, there were three flying Santas, but only the one over Beverly Drive and Wilshire Boulevard remains today. The others, at Beverly and Charleville, and over Wilshire and Santa Monica, have been retired. Santa arrives around Thanksgiving and is gone by the new year.

Official celebrations in the City began in 1930 when Mary Pickford, the world’s biggest movie star at the time, introduced her "Light Up Beverly Hills" outdoor lighting program. She threw the switch illuminating a mammoth 90-foot Christmas tree as well as a dozen 25-foot trees with 200 lights each perched on every major intersection.

The most amazing Christmas tree in town belonged to silent film comedian Harold Lloyd and his wife Mildred. Their shared love of the season led to their tree growing to 18 feet in height and 36 feet in circumference. It boasted over 8,000 ornaments from all around the world.

Eventually, they kept it up all year long.

In 1949, film actress and Beverly Hills resident Esther Williams threw a private Christmas Eve party for her movie star friends at Uncle Bernie's Toy Menagerie, the local toy store with the free lemonade tree.

Rodeo Drive annually plays host to holiday celebrations that have featured concerts, fake snowfall, ice-skating, fairyland carriages, living mannequins, Baccarat chandeliers and plenty of shopping.

In 1994, Cybill Shepherd, Peter Fonda and Cher cruised up Rodeo on motorcycles in the Happy Harley Days parade. Recently, Santa has arrived amid fireworks, rappelling down from the rooftops onto the most famous shopping street in the world.

During lockdown, while the rest of us were hunkered down watching Bridgerton or Equalizer, Beata created a home studio and narrated an audiobook that was chosen by Reece Witherspoon for her book club.

The pandemic has slowed everything down, for sure, but the Erewhon grocery coming to Beverly Drive is ontrack to open by Summer 2022 says Yuval Chiprut, the Chief Development Officer. Erewhon (which is basically Nowhere spelled backwards) is sure to be a favorite spot, especially for this writer, who visits the deli section in the Palisades frequently. Erewhon will have two direct-access elevators leading from the 60 assigned parking spaces in the building garage. Talk about convenience!

For photographer Richard Avedon fans, the Gagosian Gallery on Camden is featuring a larger-than-life scale exhibition, ending December 18th. The 10 photographs are the original prints created for In the American West show in 1985 and have not been shown together publicly since then.

Avedon departed from his usual Vogue work to focus on the civil rights era in a collaboration with James Baldwin. A donot-miss exhibit. (Gagosian.com)

We’d have to flip a coin to decide which area is more beautiful—the luxurious spa, the private rooftop garden for Hotel Residences, the striking art throughout, the creative interior design, the first-class Ballroom, which is now the largest event space in Westside LA. . . or my favorite, Lumiere, the French brasserie. Nearly every piece of décor and accoutrement in Lumiere was imported from France. Soaring behind the hotel will be two new 44-story residential towers, designed by internationally renowned architects Pei, Cobb, Freed & Partners. The Metro Rail will stop right on the corner!
