Abortion is illegal in the country of Argentina and women can be punished with up to four years in prison for aiding in or having an abortion. Ater pressure from non-governmental organizations and various women’s rights movements, the government of Argentina voted in the summer of 2018 on a bill that would legalize abortion up to fourteen weeks at no cost to the woman. While the bill passed with a close vote of 129-125 in the Lower Chamber of Congress, it was eventually defeated by the Senate in August, losing the vote 38-31, with two senators abstaining.
his book follows my personal journey during the night of the Lower Congressional vote. I traveled to Buenos Aires to study and create this photography documentary, and when I saw the graitti and political debate that was surrounding abortion I knew I wanted to capture these events. In this book, you will ind photographs of various women and women’s groups who took to the streets during the 22 hour debate before the votes were cast, along with a collection of graitti on both sides of the topic that I saw throughout the city during my stay.
