OUGD501 COP3 Proposal Bethany Wood

To what extent does sustainability effect the Graphic Design Industry? Sticking with the current chosen project theme of sustainability. For me this year my practice has become clearer and I like to think about ethics and designing with a cause. Really focusing on social responsibility. Sustainability and the environment are becoming a more serious worldwide problem as greenhouse gases increase every day. This topic is still very much of interest and will becoming even more relevant and needed as time passes. Coming up with design led solutions to help or minimize this problem is key and something I would love to be involved in. As Papanek said, ‘‘This is one area in which the socalled Third World countries are leading the way- because of material scarcities, recycling is an accepted way of life there and has been for generations’ how can we change mindsets or make alterations to change this. The breadth of this subject is huge giving lots of both research and practical potential with lots of contextual influences to consider. This is still a subject I can explore much further.

Relevant Subjects. • Climate Change. • Sustainability. • Environment. • Ethics within the design field. • Biodegradability. • Material usage.

Relevant Quotes. ‘Considering how, and from where, things are made is virtually impossible for consumers, without such ready information imbued within the objects’ gestalt aesthetic’ Papanek 1995 ‘you may be referred to as a consumer, but there is very little that you actually consume— some food, some liquids. Everything else is designed for you to throw away when you are finished with it’ Mcdonough and Braungart 2002 ‘This is one area in which the so-called Third World countries are leading the way- because of material scarcities, recycling is an accepted way of life there and has been for generations’ Papanek 1995 ‘there are still far too many wasteful secondary packaging schemes, and far too many short sighted delivery systems.’ Boylston 2009 ‘Branding has moved so far beyond its commercial origins that its impact is virtually immeasurable in social and cultural terms’ Olins 2003
