Autumn Tips for Seniors

by Expert Contributor Lindsey Poeth, CSA®, Owner of Oasis Senior Advisors Mainline

Autumn is all about change: The change of the leaves to beautiful autumnal hues and the change of weather to more comfortable, cool temperatures. As our region begins the transition to fall, seniors should take stock in their own homes, to make sure they are ready for the changes in the season. Here is the essential checklist to ensure you are safe and healthy this fall.

Protect Against Falls

Speaking of fall… Take this opportunity to make a change to your home to ensure there are no tripping hazards that make it easy for you to fall. You can help prevent this by installing non-skid pads in the shower and grab bars to ensure you can walk safely around your home. This is a great time to make sure your house is free of excess clutter. Take your time, but make sure your home is safe for you to move about freely.

Schedule Your Annual Physical

Call and schedule your annual check-up to make sure you are keeping yourself healthy!

Get Flu/COVID Vaccines

This is the start of the cold and flu season, so it would be a wise decision to keep up-to-date with your vaccinations. Protect yourself against all viruses and germs this fall. Keeping yourself protected should be one of your top priorities this season!

Check Your Batteries

If you use wood fire stoves, natural gas, propane or space heaters, make sure you change your smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector batteries. Check your detectors every month to ensure they are working properly. Always call a friend or family member for help if something isn’t working as you expect it should.

Clear Leaves from Your Home

Although very pleasing to our eyes, leaves can cause a lot of trouble. If they become wet, they can become slippery, causing a fall hazard. Take your time and clean them up. They should be raked away from high traffic areas. You can always ask your grandkids or a neighbor for help.

If you are dreading your fall “to-do” list, then maybe it’s time to take a look into a senior living community this fall. Take advantage of the free information and advisory services that are available for seniors who are looking at transitioning into an independent living or personal care community. That transition will allow you to enjoy the seasons rather than trying to keep up with your home’s “to-do” list.
