mericans turning our clocks back to “fall behind” has become an annual ritual. Days are shorter, nights longer, and cold temps are returning. These annual changes should also bring to mind this question: Is my vehicle ready for the upcoming winter? Summer’s scorching heat usually affects and can warp wiper blades. Have you noticed on rainy days that those blades are less efficient than when they were new? Now imagine those blades trying to wipe sleet or snow off your windshield. Now’s the time to invest in new wiper blades so your vision won’t be obstructed if you’re driving during nasty winter weather.
Also think about how below-freezing temperatures affect your vehicle’s radiator. If the fluid in your radiator isn’t a 50/50 water and antifreeze (aka coolant) mix, radiator fluid will freeze, which will cause the engine to overheat, which may crack the radiator (expensive to replace!). Be sure to use only the specific antifreeze recommended for your vehicle’s make and model. Driving in bad weather can be a chore but even more so if your tires aren’t safe. If they’re worn or bald, stopping quickly may be impossible. Bald tires can also cause you to hydroplane. Check the treads for wear and if questionable, replace them, not just for your own safety but for those on the road with you.
