The Benefits of Mindful Movement
by Expert Contributor Kaitlin Battiste of From the Top Dance
There is no doubt that moving our bodies makes us feel good, and joining a recreational class or club gives us a sense of belonging by making us feel like we’re part of a community. Staying active not only keeps people of all ages physically fit and healthy, it provides many social, emotional and intellectual benefits. Now more than ever, people need an outlet to socialize and connect with others. And if that outlet helps improve our mental and physical health in the process, it’s a win-win!
Mindful movement and socialization both play integral parts in human development. Mindful movement is a form of physical exercise performed with awareness. Think running, dance, yoga, pilates or any type of movement that can help you become more aware of your body. Because of the mental focus it requires, it trains the body to move more optimally during physical activities and everyday life.
Mindful movement can improve health and development in both children and adults, improving concentration, confidence and self-awareness while improving overall quality of life. Attending a class that combines this kind of physical exercise while doing it with others in a community setting provides us the best of both worlds, boosting our health and happiness and helping expand our circle. Such classes are a great way to have fun, meet new people in the community and develop friendships!

How do you plan on incorporating more mindful movement into your life? Though it can be difficult to find the time in our busy schedules to prioritize our mental and physical health and wellness, signing up for a class can help us jumpstart a well-balanced routine and hold us accountable.
There are many options available if you’re searching for a class for yourself or your child. Check out the summer schedule of your local dance studios and you’ll see they offer summer dance camps, and dance and yoga classes for children and adults. Take an adult dance class to get out of the house for some much-needed you-time, and pair it with a yoga class to cool down and stretch your muscles, to balance out the cardio. Sign your child up for a ballet or hip hop-class so they can have a creative outlet for their energy and make new friends while exploring their interests.
It’s time to prioritize your mental and physical health and find a community class that helps you feel like your best self!
