FACTS & FIGURES

Pacific Grove was founded in 1875 as a Methodist church camp-

ground. It was incorporated as a city on July 16, 1889 and became a Charter city on April 22,1927. Pacific Grove boasts over 1200 properties in its Historic Inventory, more than any other city of its size in America. Sitting at the tip of the Peninsula, it is the only city to offer five miles of public shoreline along both the Pacific Ocean and the Monterey Bay. Pacific Grove is also one of the last remaining overwintering locations for the Monarch Butterfly.

Calvin’s Wine Club Fifi’s Cafe makes fine wine accessible

Fifi’s Cafe has been an institution in Pacific Grove for over 30 years. During this time they have worked hard to give their customers everything they ask for in fine dining. Over the past few years, this has come to mean wine—fine wines— from around the world. Wine has become such a factor in providing the Fifi’s dining experience that owners, Michelle and Calvin have created Calvin’s Wine Club offering their customers their latest finds at incredible discounts. Fifi’s also hosts monthly wine tasting events and wine pairing diners. They even have a wine shop inside the cafe. For a schedule of Fifi’s wine events and Calvin’s Wine Club visit www.fifisbistrocafe.com Better yet, stop by Fifi’s, at 1188 Forest Avenue, and experience it for yourself. 36 Discover Pacific Grove

Pacific Grove’s Butterfly House—

A Love Story

J. Jackson purchased his home in 1977 so that his wife, Sonja, might fulfill her dream of living in Pacific Grove.

Soon after their arrival, Sonja began to gradually loose her eye sight. By 1980, she had been diagnosed as legally blind. That’s the year J started his Butterfly House project. He had learned his wife, who loved Pacific Grove’s butterflies, could still see bright colors and he promised her a Butterfly House.

Over the past 35 years their love continues to grow. As does the decoration adoring their home. J turned his garage into a workshop and still spends many hours each week creating the individual pieces of art, painting them bright colors. He even adds sparkling rhinestones to ensure the brightest shine. Over the years, the house has become a non-official tourist attraction with many a photo-op.

While we don’t encourage disturbing the quiet residential area this private home resides in (shhhhh, 9th St.), if you take it slow and keep a watchful eye, you may be lucky enough to catch J working out front and have an opportunity to hear the Love Story first hand. While J’s wife can no longer see his work, Both Sonja and J enjoy hearing of the joy it brings to those who pass by the house.

Building Community with Little Free Libraries

There’s a new building boom going on within the City of Pacific Grove. Nearly a dozen new structures have popped up throughout the city, each with its own unique character yet, all with the same mission—sharing the love of reading. This Little Free Libraries concept was started back east in 2009. As of 2016 the count has grown to approximately 50,000 Little Free Libraries across the country and the world. It has been so successful there is now a website, a locator map, and an official non-profit organization to foster the concept. The Movement’s mission is to promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide and to build a sense of community as we share skills, creativity and wisdom across generations. In Pacific Grove, the movement has brought out our neighbors artistic skills, with colorful and imaginative designs. These libraries can also give

you a glimpse of your neighbor’s interests and lifestyle simply from the collection of books being offered. Others have taken the concept one step further and include pantry items such as canned and boxed foods.

Cover Photo features the Little Free Library located on the corner of Pine & 2nd, which belongs to Garth Borman, Amy Fallavena and family.. For more information and a map to local sites visit www.littlefreelibrary.org Discover Pacific Grove 51

Imagine... an Art Supply Store. Germain Hatcher grew up in Pacific Grove where she nurtured her love of art. She has become a talented artist in her own right yet, it is the nurturing of the talents of others that led her to open Imagine Art Supply a little over a year ago. Germain, who volunteers with the Youth Arts Collective and has a giant circle of artistic friends, knew there was a tremendous need to fulfill in this vibrant artists’ community. She imagined a store stocked with everything from paint and canvases, to specialty tools of the trade. Her dream was made into reality with Imagine Art Supply 309 Forest Avenue. Thank you Germain, for your contribution to our community. 58 Discover Pacific Grove

The Artist’s Role In Preserving History by Steve Hauk

Artists are important to how we remember history. For instance, these paintings document the Chinese fishing village at Pacific Grove’s Point Alones, founded in 1853 and wiped out by fire in 1906. It was the first settlement of Chinese families in the United States. Thanks to early California artists we have visual renderings to match Robert Louis Stevenson’s prose, who wrote of the village in 1879.

The painting on the right, by Jules Mersfelder (1865-1937), depicts fishermen, boats and village huts bathed in a gorgeous Monterey Bay sunrise. It was likely painted in 1905 – a newspaper item in July of that year mentions Mersfelder is a guest at the Winston Hotel on Lighthouse Avenue at 16th, a brisk walk to the village.

The top painting is by Mary Amanda Lewis (1872-1953). It was probably painted around the turn of the century when the talented Lewis would come from her Sacramento home to play the cello in the evening at the Del Monte Hotel in Monterey. During the day she’d walk and paint. Were she to return today to where she painted the village, she’d look around and see the Hopkins Marine Station and the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row, and she might paint those.

Steve Hauk writes for the Steinbeck Review and Steinbecknow.com. He recently completed a play, The Cottages: Scenes from Lives Interrupted. A collection of stories based on Steinbeck’s life, ``Stories from a Writer’s Life,’’ will be published early in 2017. Steve and Nancy Hauk founded Hauk Fine Arts in Pacific Grove more than 25 years ago. The gallery specializes in early and contemporary California art. Discover Pacific Grove 61
