SCOTTS COBBLE NORDIC CENTER

Eighty-five years ago, Lake Placid opened and developed the Scotts Cobble Ski Area for the local ski community. Thousands of students learned to ski at the centre.

The facility lasted for 35 years, helping beginner skiers transition to bigger ski hills in the region. Sadly, as larger ski hills became more popular, Scotts Cobble closed.

After 50 years of the area being closed, High Peaks Cyclery, owned by Brian and Karen Delaney and family, is re-opening the Scotts Cobble Nordic Center this season. The re-opening aims to continue the long-standing and historic Nordic ski tradition in Lake Placid, “...and connect with other local trails to enhance the XC-ski experiences,” says Brian Delaney.

The new Scotts Cobble Nordic Center will feature 10+km of groomed trails for skating and classic (set tracked) skiing, a lit trail network of 10km, a Jack Rabbit Trail connection to a village 5km to the west, a heated ski lodge with restrooms, lockers and showers.

The ski lodge’s upper level offers a full restaurant and a warmup/hangout area. Also included are a ski shop with lessons, tours, wax room, ski school, waxing clinics, and a rental centre for cross-country skis, snowshoes, fatbikes, sleds, backcountry skis and alpine touring/ telemark gear.

At the Demo Center for Fischer, Rossignol, Salomon, Swix, the professional staff will also offer introductory programs in alpine touring and backcountry skiing. Events will feature cross-country ski and fatbike demo days, ski bonfires at lean-tos, full moon ski celebrations and after-school ski programs.

The new Scotts Cobble Nordic Center is free for residents of Keene, Lake Placid, Wilmington, Tupper Lake and the Tri-Lakes region.

Founded in 1938 by the Town of North Elba, Scotts Cobble stands 2,549 feet in elevation.

“One mention of Scotts Cobble in this town brings up memories and stories of the first time skiing, skiing with friends after school, the infamous tow rope and infinitely wide smiles,” says the Lake Placid-North Elba Historical Society. -JC
