Back to the crossroads and heading into town, next to the traffic lights is the TGUK Windows showroom. Established in 1999 by Simon Twiddy, the company offers a range of services covering conservatories, windows, doors and panoramic bi-fold doors, soffits and fascias from their extensive showroom on Scotgate. Simon also has a Solar Sunroof Energy company at the premises. A second TGUK showroom will open early this year in Cambridge city centre. Alex Drury Photography is another independent business on this stretch of Scotgate; ran by the eponymously named Alex. From his studio, Alex carries out a wide and innovative range of work from the familiar - family, baby and pet portraits, through maternity shoots and parentsto-be, highly popular fashion makeover shoots (in conjunction with a professional make-up artist) of individuals, mum & daughter, friends, dad & son - to the bang up to date and novel burlesque style boudoir shoots, with the assistance of photographer Rachel Williams. Versatile and friendly, Alex is a firm believer in the need to establish a relaxed rapport with clients to achieve the best results. GRA’s Models is a tiny little shop, crammed to the ceiling with die-cast models. The hobby turned business of Graydon Forsyth, this little shop has provided an over the counter model service to countless enthusiasts from far afield. Graydon told me that what started as a childhood love of dinky and Corgi cars as a child, his father owned the Vauxhall garage on the site of the current BP garage, has, “been in my blood ever since”. Not a conventional toy shop, it attracts men and increasingly women with an interest in die-cast models, from all over the country. On the opposite side of the road, next to Scotgate car park is Stamford Mobility Scooters. Owned by Peter Seamer for 20 years; in the past seven he has specialised in products designed to help the elderly and disabled get the most out of life. He has everything from big button telephones, talking watches and clocks to aids for daily living; including bathing and feeding, as well as a wide range of mobility scooters. Peter offers a repair service for these as well advice on stair lifts. A little further down the street, on the same side is Brazilyana, a small slice of Brazil in Stamford - all green and yellow and South American music, from the owner Yana’s homeland. Yana, an ex-nurse, specialises in Brazilian waxing, using her own brand of products. She has also recently started stocking a range of Brazilian ladies sportswear called Rolamoca at the salon.
