As a trial attorney, Steve Yerrid has achieved a track record that few lawyers can match. His successes include more than 225 verdicts and settlements in excess of a million dollars, the largest medical malpractice verdict in Florida’s history, one of the largest wrongful death verdicts in the nation, and the top five personal injury verdicts in Tampa’s history.
that’s the secret to a good life and a successful practice—working to make a difference and actually doing it.”
Yerrid’s work has also had a significant societal impact: ■ Most recently, Yerrid secured a $27.4 million settlement for the City of Tampa in its lawsuit against BP over the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Mayor Bob Buckhorn pledged to use the money to benefit community legacy projects. ■ Yerrid represented the State of Florida as the youngest member of the “Dream Team” selected by the late Governor Lawton Chiles to take on the cigarette industry.

These concessions, along with critically important “smoking-gun” documents, were passed along to every other state in the country. “Both of my parents died of tobaccorelated illnesses, so it was very satisfying to be a part of preventing tragedies like that from happening to other families,” Yerrid says. “To me,

The Yerrid Foundation, his family’s self-funded charity, has contributed millions to more than 500 charities and causes. “When people ask why, after nearly four decades, I continue to practice law, the answer is simple. It’s for the same reason I’m so passionate about charitable work—I believe in the goodness of helping others and I plan to do that as long as I can.”

From the
Director of Publications WELCOME TO THE ANNUAL EDITION of Best Lawyers, featuring 755 of the 55,000 lawyers selected by their peers to be included in the twenty-second edition of The Best Lawyers in America. In this year’s focused yet comprehensive guide you will find top lawyers from 244 firms practicing in 102 key areas of specialization. This year, we are pleased to announce that for the 2016 edition, Sarasota and St. Petersburg have been named their own metros—designations long overdue. We congratulate all who have earned a place in this year’s guide and offer special recognition to the 51 lawyers selected for the first time by highlighting their names in green throughout the publication. In addition, we are thrilled to announce the 76 recipients of the “Lawyer of the Year” award by printing their names in red within the survey results as well. Only one lawyer per practice area per metropolitan zone is granted this distinction, based on the highest peer ratings received. We invite you to visit BestLawyers.com/Florida to view the full list , of Florida s Lawyers of the Year and an onlineonly feature on Sarasota’s remarkable trusts and estates honoree, Rick Gans. Turn to page 6 to read our new In the News feature, which is a collected sampling of some of the remarkable achievements these lawyers have
accomplished in the last year. Every month, our staff painstakingly searches for noteworthy news items, culling them and whittling them down to a single page of content. Did we miss something big? Let us know! Email us at news@bestlawyers.com and we may include you in the online edition. Plus, don’t forget to add us to your firm mailing list also so we can keep track of what’s happening in real time. Please note: this year, we have organized the listings by city so that no matter where you are, from Bartow to Winter Haven, you will find the right attorney to resolve your personal or professional matter. On the move? Simply scan the QR code on page 3 with your smartphone and take us with you, wherever you go. Each lawyer with a profile on BestLawyers.com is hyperlinked and highlighted in blue within this publication, truly putting the power to make an informed decision at your fingertips. Because it’s inevitable—at some point in your life, you’re going to need a lawyer, and you won’t always be able to predict when that need will arise. The lawyers listed in this guide are here to help.

About Us
For more than three decades, Best Lawyers lists have been compiled by conducting exhaustive peer-review surveys in which tens of thousands of leading lawyers confidentially evaluate their professional peers. If the votes for an attorney are positive enough for inclusion in Best Lawyers, that attorney must maintain those votes in subsequent polls to remain on the list for each edition. Lawyers are not permitted to pay any fee to participate in or be included on our lists. Best Lawyers' peer-reviewed listings are now published in almost 70 countries around the world, and our presence has grown substantially in the international legal community. In the U.S. alone, Best Lawyers lists reach more than 17 million readers through newspapers and regional magazines. The 22nd edition of The Best Lawyers in America (2016) includes 55,041 attorneys in 140 practice areas, covering all 50 states and the District of Columbia, and inclusion in this year’s publication is based on more than 6.2 million detailed evaluations of lawyers by other lawyers.

Sarasota’s 2016 Lawyers of the Year are happily featured here as part of the long overdue designation of bustling Sarasota as its own metro area.
CONSTRUCTION LAW Thomas F. Icard, Jr.
“Lawyers who focus their practice on construction related matters, as I have during the past 35 years, must gain and maintain a command of an unusually broad array of traditional legal practice areas. They include contracts, licensing requirements, lien law, surety law, claims negotiation, multi-party litigation, insurance coverage, trial work, arbitration, mediation, and other forms of alternative dispute resolution. I have always enjoyed and continue to enjoy this challenge and diversity. I have had the good fortune since 2004 to serve on the Board of Directors of Bay Area Legal Services, which is our federal Legal Services Corporation affiliate for the Tampa Bay region.”
“The practice of land use and zoning law allows me to shepherd a development project from ‘the cradle to the grave,’ that is, from a project’s inception to its completion. It is especially rewarding to know that in some projects I helped create the end result. Additionally, I am a past chair of United Way Suncoast and currently serve on the executive committee.” LAND USE AND ZONING LAW William W. Merrill III
“For more than 25 years, I have proudly represented multiple financial institutions in complex workouts and foreclosure actions involving lender liability claims and documentary issues. I would be a vintner or someone involved in the production or distribution of fine wines, if not a lawyer.”
“It is a great feeling when those colleagues with whom you spend decades of your professional life deem you worthy of special recognition. I believe working with outstanding lawyers on all sides of issues leads to recognition, more than any particular result on a particular legal assignment. If I wasn’t in practice, however, I would like to take my trombone to New Orleans and play with Trombone Shorty (Troy Andrews).” LITIGATION REAL ESTATE Thomas H. Dart

William M. Seider is president of Williams Parker Harrison Dietz & Getzen. His practice covers a wide range of real estate matters, including high-end home sales, and focusing especially on representing developers through all stages of condominium and subdivision development.
William Partridge is the head of Grossman Roth and Patridge’s Sarasota office, which works with clients all along Florida’s Gulf Coast. He has been in practice for over 40 years and focuses his practice in personal injury, medical malpractice, wrongful death, trucking litigation, sexual abuse cases, and contract litigation. “While a good share of my work consists of recurring and mundane assignments, the complexities of tax law give rise to a lot of ‘haven’t seen that before’ experiences. I look forward to those challenges and the creative problem-solving they require, and it’s why I look forward to each new assignment–even after more than 36 years in practice. Tax lawyers may not be the theatrical courtroom heroes you see on television or in the movies, and some of us will come across as ‘geeky’ at times, but we take pride for daring to take on and conquer the complexities and nuances of the ‘no man’s land’ of the tax code and regulations.”

I try never to take for granted the trust my clients place in me.
Q&A with Richard R. Gans Trusts and Estates Sarasota, FL What work do you think may have particularly contributed to your Lawyer of the Year award in Trusts and Estates for Sarasota?
usually like to talk about: death and money. I try never to take for granted the trust my clients place in me when they talk about those things.
road that led to my legal career, and I have forgotten a good bit. I can still fight my way through a conversation in Mandarin, though.
For many years I have participated in the Real Property, Probate and Trust Law (RPPTL) Section of The Florida Bar. I have chaired several committees within the section, and have taken the lead in drafting a lot of proposed legislation that is now part of Florida law. I also do a lot of speaking at RPPTL-sponsored continuing education events and at various events sponsored by local non-profits or the Sarasota Bar Association. I get out a good bit.
What do you find most challenging?
What is some pro bono or charity work that stands out?
What do you find most rewarding about your field? Getting to know my clients. I also enjoy that estate planning is a problem-solving, let’s-get-the-bestoutcome-we-can type of practice. I like collaboration and don’t like to sue people, though sometimes it has to come to that. I make my living talking about two things that people do not
The law in my area can get very technical, very fast. Sometimes the complexity required to obtain what might be the optimal tax or estate planning result is just not going to work, as a practical matter, in a particular situation. Knowing when that is the case is an art, not a science. What brought you to Sarasota? My wife. She is a fifth-generation Floridian, and if I wanted the girl, I had to come to Florida. Impressively, you speak Mandarin Chinese and French—where did you pick these languages up? I learned both in school, and then lived in Taiwan and mainland China for a time to really lock down Mandarin. It’s been awhile since the fork in the
I am a proud board member of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County and of the Woman’s Exchange, and I try to pitch in as needed from time to time for other local nonprofits, large and small. My 11-year-old daughter sees the satisfaction I derive from doing this sort of thing, and it looks like she is going to grow up to be philanthropic herself. She’s already raised a lot of money for her favorite causes and I could not be more proud of her. If you weren’t a lawyer, what would you be? A teacher. If you are going to teach it, you have to learn it, and I like to learn. I also enjoy being a part of others’ learning… I like to explain things.

We are delighted to announce the St. Petersburg 2106 Lawyers of the Year here as part of the new designation of St. Petersburg as its own metro area.
APPELLATE PRACTICE Marie Tomassi
“I love the intellectual, strategic, and writing challenges inherent in appellate work, and the collegiality of the appellate bench and bar. I’ve practiced appellate law since 1988, and have been Florida Bar Board certified since 1998, so I like to think it is my body of work that led to my award. Outside of being a lawyer, perhaps I would love a career like Rick Steves’, traveling Europe to review hotels, food, wine, and local wonders. Or perhaps I would love being a fiction writer. It is difficult to imagine not practicing law, however, so I haven’t given it much thought.”
EMPLOYMENT LAW INDIVIDUALS Angela E. Outten
Joan M. Vecchioli has been in practice at Johnson Pope since 1986 and her substantial expertise covers a wide swath of law, including: labor and employment law, education law, commercial real estate, commercial litigation, and mediation. She holds a board certification from the Florida Bar in labor and employment law and is a certified circuit civil mediator.
Timothy M. Spridgeon has more than 34 years of experience taking care of clients’ U.S. immigration and visa issues, and personally reviews every case that crosses his desk.

“In my more than 20 years representing employees, I’ve litigated all types of employment law cases against some of the very best employment defense lawyers. I’ve been fortunate to have represented good clients with good cases. Helping people who, due to no fault of their own, have lost their jobs and enforcing Federal and State laws which protect employees’ rights are the most rewarding parts of my practice. I believe this award is an acknowledgement that I’ve represented my clients well while making a favorable impression upon my opposing counsel and lawyers in my community. If I weren’t a lawyer, I think I would be a fiction writer specializing in stories with legal themes. I’ve got a few good ideas, so maybe it’s not too late.”
“Finding simple and fair solutions to challenging problems is where I find the most satisfaction in my work and, if I hadn’t gone into law, I might have enjoyed a profession finding the best way to repair or improve the design of mechanical equipment or systems. I’ve been involved as a volunteer in proposing and developing legislation and continuing legal education programs and materials for trust and estate matters through the Real Property, Probate, and Trust Law Section of The Florida Bar for over 25 years.”
“I find real estate law—especially the land use and zoning part—rewarding because it permits me to participate in developing and redeveloping communities. I recently assisted a client in working to create a new zoning district, getting the client’s property rezoned in the new district, and helping them obtain approval of a site plan that permitted them to build a new mixed use 2,800,000 square foot development. My charity work includes 30 years of service to the All Children’s Hospital, including serving as a past chairman of the board.”
“The opportunity to learn about so many different and unique things makes working in medical malpractice law a pleasure: every day is a school day. If I hadn’t been a lawyer, I might have been an architect.”
MEDICAL MALPRACTICE LAW DEFENDANTS Jeffrey M. Goodis
Andrew B. Sasso focuses his practice on probate, guardianship, and trust litigation and administration. He has served for the past ten years on The Florida Bar Board of Governors and is a past president of the Clearwater Bar Association.

In the practice of personal injury law, there is a great satisfaction in feeling that your work can make a difference in the lives of your clients.
Q&A with Thomas D. Masterson Personal Injury Litigation – Plaintiffs St. Petersburg, FL What do you find most rewarding about your field? In the practice of personal injury law, there is a great satisfaction in feeling that your work can make a difference in the lives of your clients. When a client has lost a loved one or has a disabling injury that prevents them from being productive and selfsupporting, being able to provide that client with financial security is one of the most rewarding things I can think of.
Do you do any charitable work? I have been actively involved in the St. Petersburg Bar Foundation for years. The St. Petersburg Bar Foundation is the charitable arm of the St. Petersburg Bar Association and involves attorneys who are trying to do good things for the community. The Foundation provides financial support for a number of charitable and educational projects and considers grant applications for charities that have a purpose consistent with the goals of the Foundation. I feel the public often doesn’t know about all of the good things many lawyers do to benefit the community. My involvement in the St. Petersburg Bar Foundation has the added bonus of helping to provide a positive image for lawyers.
Did you ever consider another profession than being a lawyer? It is hard to imagine myself as anything except a lawyer. If I weren’t practicing law, I would probably want to be a coach or a teacher. As I look back on the people who have had the greatest influence on my life, other than my family, there were a few teachers and a few coaches who made a big impact. Having a chance to work in that kind of position would be a worthy way to make a living.

The most rewarding part of my work is the sense of accomplishment I get when the deal closes and everyone’s goals are achieved.
Alexandra “Sandy” MacLennan Public Finance Law Tampa, FL ■ Sandy MacLennan, a Tampa-based
partner in Squire Patton Boggs’ financial services and public and infrastructure finance practices was one of the first female lawyers from Florida to be elected a fellow of the American College of Bond Counsel and focuses her practice on assisting public entities and non-profits in all financing matters, working to help finance everything from affordable housing, to higher education and municipal projects, to airports and projects in the health care field. “The most rewarding part of my work is the sense of accomplishment I get when the deal closes and everyone’s goals are achieved,” says MacLennan. “A fair amount of my practice involves health care finance for both public hospitals and non-profit organizations. Working with these organizations gives real purpose to the work you do. It’s great work and you see the tangible benefits of your efforts.”
MacLennan recently worked on the public finance aspect of a project to build a senior living facility in Boca Raton, helping secure $250 million in public bond financing for the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County. Working in public finance law with non-profits can be different in many ways from the work of commercial finance lawyers working with private sector entities, according to MacLennan. “To those not used to working in the public sector, sunshine and public records laws might seem overly expansive,” says MacLennan. “Likewise, the federal income tax laws and regulations that apply to tax exemptions add another layer of complexity not typically found in conventional financing.” MacLennan seems to thrive on the complexity of her work, however, and is possessed of a strong sense of purpose and a healthy dose of patience.
MacLennan has been with Squire Patton Boggs since 1989 and says that one of the most difficult issues she has fought in her years practicing public finance law has been recent: trying to help public entities that were negatively impacted by the financial and real estate downturn of 2008. She points to this upheaval in the municipal market as one which “virtually paralyzed the market and led to some very difficult situations for some of my municipal and nonprofit clients. The negative effects continue to linger to this day.” Even though some clients in her field may remain strained for resources, MacLennan finds her fellow attorneys working in public finance law in Florida and in Tampa, particularly, to be very amiable. “Even though we compete for business,” says MacLennan, “we truly like and respect each other. Having that confirmed by my award is gratifying.”

MAKING A DIFFERENCE important thing is life is helping others. “It is the most selfless and selfish act there is,” says Yerrid. “I believe anyone deserves a chance at a good life, and helping others is tremendously gratifying.” It is a maxim that has shaped Yerrid’s life professionally and personally, inspiring him to ensure that others experience the help and opportunities he did, which allowed him to become one of the nation̛ s best trial lawyers. In June 1971, before returning to the Virgin Islands where he did summer construction work, Katharine Graham, then owner and publisher of The Washington Post and a friend of Yerrid’s father, who worked there for many years, made it her mission to further Yerrid’s education. “I knew her since I was a very young man. On one of my visits to her office, she called the dean at Georgetown Law University Center who had once been the Post’s general counsel, and convinced him to interview me,” says Yerrid. “We hit it off, and I was admitted ʻon probation,̛ because my Louisiana State University background was less than stellar. That great law shcool gave me a chance, and Mrs. Graham was the reason.” “Frankly, I have never succeeded without the help of others,” says Yerrid. “And whenever I have failed, I have failed all by myself. I think helping others is essential for a good and meaningful life.”
How One Attorney Makes Good on the Golden Rule

hen Steve Yerrid found success—real, big success—one of the first things he did was buy his mother a car. An Oldsmobile, to be exact. “My mother got to see me succeed more than she had ever imagined,” says Yerrid, a nationally renowned and highly respected trial attorney from Tampa Bay and founder of the prestigious Yerrid Law Firm. “I paid off her house and bought her a car, but when it was delivered she didn’t like the color. She finally settled on the third one I had them bring. She wanted an American car that was pretty.” Yerrid’s mother, Faye, divorced from his father when he was only seven years old. “My mother raised me, and sometimes she had a hard time putting food on the table, putting clothes on my back, but she never failed me,” says Yerrid. “She denied herself things and instead gave them to me.” Yerrid learned how to play baseball by throwing at his mother’s mitt. She rarely saw any child support. He had a paper route, and he took a job edging sidewalks at their apartment building to help out. Always forgiving toward his family, Yerrid notes that through a tumultuous relationship between Faye and his father, Charlie—a sometimes-abusive former boxer and WWII vet—his parents taught him his most valued lesson: That the most 18 | F L O R I D A
Before he had the trappings of success, Yerrid used what he had to fulfill that goal. “I didn’t have much money, but I did have time,” says Yerrid. “And that is the most precious commodity we can give to others: our time coupled with love.” In the 70̛ s, Yerrid began working with his beloved cancer kids. On another occasion, he went about soliciting 125 steaks, numerous cases of Coca-Cola and “all the corn we could carry” for a Steak & Sports day benefitting local children who have been separated from their families, live within the state system, or have behavioral problems—an annual event that, 35 years later, the Hillsborough County Bar Association Young Lawyers Division still carries on. After Yerrid achieved greatness, he stepped up his giving to a new level. And he has indeed achieved greatness—at 30 years of age he successfully defended John Lerro, the pilot of the freighter MV Summit Venture, clearing him of wrongdoing when the ship crashed into the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in 1980, killing 35 and causing more than $100 million in damages. Other major successes include a $12 billion settlement in late Florida Governor Lawton Chiles’ case against the cigarette industry in 1997 in which Yerrid served as the youngest member of Florida’s “Dream Team;” a 2006 jury verdict of $217 million, the largest medical malpractice award in Florida’s history and the nation’s largest medical

malpractice verdict; a $330 million award in 2009, the nation’s largest that year in a wrongful death suit; and earlier this year, he got a verdict of $64 million for an injured construction worker. In July, he obtained a $27.4 million BP payout for the City of Tampa following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the largest amount that any Florida city received. These successes, and many others, formed the base on which Yerrid was able to build a legacy as a philanthropist. “I call it reverse money laundering,” says Yerrid. “I take from the wrongdoers and use that money to further the

goals of our charitable work and help worthy causes that better people and give them a chance at life. I believe that is something everyone deserves.” The Yerrid Foundation supports a variety of causes, including cancer research, crisis centers for domestic abuse and women’s shelters, a host of children-focused causes, and many many others. Each year his foundation and the Pediatric Foundation hosts Steve Yerrid’s Kids Fishing Derby and a two-day celebrity fishing tournament with his close friend and MLB hall-offamer Wade Boggs. Annually, he teams up with the Tampa
Bay Lightning for Tampa Bay Fights Cancer Night that invites cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, families, doctors, nurses and volunteers to an NHL game, with tickets, t-shirts, and food vouchers provided at no cost. After almost two decades, nearly 100,000 of our special guests have been in attendance, and the fishing tournament has raised millions of dollars, $500,000 in the past year alone. “We have been privileged to support cancer research for decades. In that time, the cure rate has gone from three in five to four in five families,” says Yerrid. “That
is a remarkable achievement. But in my lifetime, I want to see it five in five.” For Yerrid, his personal philanthropy is just an extension of the work he does in the courtroom, where he hopes to effect change in corporate behavior, encourage remedial measures to prevent repeat tragedies and deter others from doing wrong. “Too often, the wellmoneyed and powerful are able to overcome those who have been wronged just because of logistics,” says Yerrid. To that end, “I fight in the courtroom, not because I dislike the other people, but because I am on the right side,
and for justice to prevail, we need to win.” Yerrid’s parents instilled in him the belief “Do unto others as you’d have them do unto you,” a principle he admits is sometimes hard to follow. He notes that a lot of people believed in him, even when he did not believe in himself. “I credit all those people for my success; I simply took advantage of the opportunities I was given,” says Yerrid. “I am certain that a life well-lived creates ripples of good that, though we can't know where they will go, over generations, turn into waves of goodness that benefit many.” www.bestlawyers.com | 19
