The Garden in APRIL Are you plugged in to plug plants? How impatient are you? Come on, be brutally honest now, asks Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. The way we garden and how much time we spend doing it really depends on our lifestyle but when those ever-so innovative nurserymen decided to market part-grown seedling and cuttings just a few years ago, they were onto a winner from day one. Because, let’s be frank here, when it comes to germination, our patience can be stretched to the extreme! But please don’t get me wrong I still sow plants from seed, mainly vegetables but some flowers, but guaranteed results, especially with bedding (seasonal) plants, is what we want these days! That explains, perhaps, why vegetable seed sales are outstripping flower seeds, and that the popularity of all manner of plug plants are selling well at garden centres.

Plugs and pots of seedlings offer instant results, so here’s a few tips for you to get the best results from them. • Easter Weekend is early enough to start off your plants. If you can’t plant them straight away grow them on a bright windowsill, spacing the plants out. Popular varieties can sell out quickly, so be savvy and don’t miss the boat. Seedlings, however, have a short shelf-life, so don’t hang about with these, move them swiftly into cell trays using good quality traditional potting compost or a multipurpose compost. • Carefully water the seedlings and allow them to drain for half an hour. You must keep the compost damp, watering when the top surface starts to feel dry. It’s worth noting that more seedlings die through drowning in misplaced kindness.
