FOU ND ER
ROBERT RUBIN
“I FOUND THE BRIDGE BY ACCIDENT. IN 1980, I HAD JUST CASHED MY FIRST WALL STREET BONUS OF ANY CONSEQUENCE AND DROPPED MOST OF IT ON A 1966 FERRARI 275 GTB.
I was parked in front of the Candy Kitchen in Bridgehampton one day and someone asked if I was going to the Ferrari Club at The Bridge. I was unaware of the existence of the Ferrari Club, and had no idea what The Bridge was, but I was game to check it all out - fellow Ferraristi, and an operating racetrack right in my own backyard to boot.
Turns out the thing was in play. Threatened by development, it needed saving. I let my white knight tendencies get the better of
me and bought a blocking amount of stock in Bridgehampton Road Races Corporation (Established 1953 - coincidentally, the year I was born) and consolidated ownership over the next few years. For nearly two decades, we continued to race (or at least drive at speed), the track’s glory days long behind it, yet our enthusiasm for motor sports undampened. But you can’t have a racetrack where the community doesn’t want it. I wasn’t a real estate developer -- commodity and currency trading was my métier -- but I wasn’t about to build 114 crappy houses in a cluster subdivision. Someone suggested golf. I didn’t play, but I thought that would be a nice low impact endgame for a property I had come to love: 520 wooded acres of the highest elevations in the
Hamptons. One private golf course, twenty exceptional home sites. In the end, I couldn’t bear to part with it, so I ended up doing it myself.
In 1992 I reached out to Rees Jones and Roger Ferris, and here we are today. I’m a bogey golfer (barely) and The Bridge is twenty years young. The track is gone, but the sporting heritage of the site is well recognized by the art and architecture of what has succeeded it.
I’ve sold a few lots to my friends over the years, but now it’s finally time for me to dip a toe in the waters of real estate development. The Homes at the Bridge are the final frontier of this forty-year adventure of mine which began with a casual encounter at a local luncheonette.”
CON TEN TS
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
From its inception in 1957, the Bridgehampton Race Circuit hosted major races up until 1970 when substantial reconstructions were needed. Robert Rubin took over in the 1980s, re-zoned the land and collaborated with Rees Jones and Roger Ferris to create The Bridge, opening the golf course to its first members in 2002.
1953
THE BRIDGEHAMPTON RACE CIRCUIT OPENS
Between 1953 and 1956, BRRC purchases a total of 550 acres of woodlots in the Noyack Hills in more than 20 separate transactions. The circuit opens in 1957. It is one of the first permanent road racing venues in the U.S.
1969 1979 1981 1986
THE BEGINNING OF THE END
1969-1970 The SCCA serves the BRRC with a notice that the course needs major reconstruction and improvements. The track no longer meets the standard for road racing by the end of the 1960’s.
1970 The last major race to take plan in Bridgehampton - The Trans-Am.
LATE 70’S The track remains open to minor races and club events throughout the 70’s and continues to deteriorate.
RACING IN LIMBO
1981 A real estate developer is contracted to buy the land for $3M subject to shareholders approval but fails to close.
1982 Friends host the 25th anniversary racing event to gain support and stop the sale but regulatory impediments placed on the track operations by the town made it impossible for the racing business to operate in the black.
1983-1986 Robert Rubin becomes biggest stockholder of BRRC, invests in facility improvements, and attempts to improve the viability of club racing.
THE BRIDGE IS BORN
1992 Robert Rubin becomes the sole owner of BRRC, he proposes that the land be rezoned for a golf course and a limited number of homes and offers to deed 150 acres of unspoiled woods to the town.
Robert Rubin reaches out to Rees Jones & Roger Ferris to create The Bridge.
1999 After nearly ten years of various town and state regulations, the project obtains its final approvals and commences construction.
2002 The Golf Course Opens.
CLUBHOUSE OPENS
2006 The Clubhouse is completed by Roger Ferris + Partners. Organized in bladelike shapes inspired by the land’s racing past, the building offers sweeping 280-degree views and a host of sustainable features.
2017 In 2017 the club reaches its maximum capacity of 180 members.
