My name is Bernadette Rosano and I am a 2020 graduate of the Ryerson University Bachelor of Architectural Science program.

My interest in architecture started at a young age when I developed an awareness for how design impacts everyday life; from how light enters a room to skyscrapers shading the sidewalk.

Throughout my education I became increasingly interested in the way that architecture has the ability to impact every person who encounters it.

Every choice made by an architect impacts the feel of the design and the space surrounding it along with the essence of accessibility, sustainability, public vs. private, and so much more.

My goal as a designer is use my creative abilities and technological knowledge together as one and create functional, evocative spaces.

Design Consultant Innofab Millworks Corporation January 2020 - July 2020 Design consult for a ballroom renovation at The King Edward Omni Hotel in Toronto, Ontario. Designed a solution to cover an accordion style partition wall creating an unsightly condition in the main ballroom. Contacted and discussed with manufacturers for specifications, quotes and samples.

THE CHURCH OF ST. JOSEPH THE WORKER ARCHETYPES, THE SACRED AND METHODOLOGY OF FORMATION IN ARCHITECTURE

The Church of St. Joseph the Worker is located in Toronto’s new up and coming Canary District.

The church draws heavily on its namesake saint and his symbolism for the overall design and ornamentation. A heavy timber structure is used to highlight the carpentry aspect of St. Joseph the Worker whilst the heavy use of brick is drawn from the surrounding industrial and residential architecture. Sustainable strategies such as a geothermal system, rain water collection and green roofs are put in place to fit in with the surrounding building performance standards of the new developments within the neighborhoods.

The doors and windows were designed predominantly using the flower of life as well as motifs from the symbol of St. Joseph the Worker. The stepped up clerestory windows allow the procession to be emphasized both through form and the light filtering inside, the roof becomes higher as the space becomes more holy.

Transverse Section

Various elements throughout the interior of the church are designed to reflect the symbolism of St. Joseph the Worker.

The floor tiles use motifs found within the flower of life as well as red and gold coloring, two colors that are not only important within church doctrine but are also the colors of the namesake saint. The more intricate tile is laid along the central aisle, framing the sacred, processional walk to the altar. The tile is simplified along the side aisles.

The pointed altar steps backwards, an inverse of the roof, and has wooden detailing in homage to St. Joseph the Worker.

The altar rail plays off of the window design just slightly simplified. The main gate implements a large flower of life, centered on the altar.

The design for the light fixtures is drawn from the three lilies that make up the main symbol of St. Joseph the worker.

C A M P W I N S TO N N AT U R E H U T PAVILION PROPOSAL

The Nature Hut for Camp Winston is designed to be a safe space for children and teens with neurobiological disorders. The pavilion was required to provide shelter and be enclosed whilst being low impact on the natural environment and promoting a peaceful, meditative space. To impact the environment as little as possible, untreated cedar wood was used for the rib structure and decking in order to maintain the natural surrounding while avoiding any harsh chemical treatments. The white fins are made of gator board to allow for durability whilst still being translucent; they are purposefully angled to allow for views to the outside at eye level but provide shelter from rain and harsh, direct summer sun by closing at the top. The gravel pit in the center creates a connection to the earth, emphasizing that this is a safe space. The ribs and fins together create a warm atmosphere with a diffused natural light, creating a comforting enclosure for the campers whilst creating a soft visual impact on the surroundings. The low impact that the pavilion has on the environment lends itself to using natural materials, this in turn creates a soft transition from outside to inside and a sense of biophilia.

1:1 DETAIL MODEL STUDY

A 1:1 critical detail model of the compression ring was built for the design-build proposal. The ring is composed of 2x4 lumber cut into small sections and attached together using a mortoise and tenon connection, creating a shape as close to a smooth circle as possible. A rib made out of a 2x6 piece of lumber was drilled to every other ring piece. A frame was then created to hide the connection point of the insect mesh to each rib. A Table saw was used to cut a channel out of the center of a dowel and a nail gun was used to attach the dowels to the insides of the ribs. The fins were CNC’d out of gatorboard and then slid into the wooden channels.

Camp Winston is a non-for-profit summer camp that supports campers with neurobiological disorders in an all-natural environment. The camp strives to maintain the natural context any way possible; the large open space beside the pavilion site is used as a garden, the on-site lake “Sparrow Lake” is taken advantage of for swimming and water sports and the insides of all buildings and cabins are clad in a wood finish. Various designs were proposed to the Camp Winston team and their monetary sponsors and their design choice was further developed and built as a team. Although the pre-existing pavilion was in need of an upgrade, its intentions stuck with our team all throughout the design-build process. All the wood used is untreated in order to avoid any chemicals being introduced into the environment and the colour palette was kept neutral to maintain the natural context.

The various member sizes and angles were marked on 2x6 lumber and cut using a chop saw.

A stencil was cnc'd for each rib type and was then used to mark the holes for the fin rods to be placed.

A domino machine was used to create holes on the ends of each cut piece of lumber for the mortise and tenon connections.

The pieces were then pre-drilled for pocket screws using a jig.

The top half of the rib was joined together by gluing in place the mortise and tenon connections and then pocket screwing it.

Two of the same ribs were clamped together on site and then connected to create double ribs for the structure.

OCADU S AT E L L I T E C A M P U S SCHOOL OF DESIGN

Ontario College and Design University’s Satellite Campus is located in the newly revitalized Junction Triangle neighborhood. The design utilizes the ideas of perspective to create spaces conducive to thought and creativity for both students and staff. On the Eastern side, the building emphasizes its verticality with a simple, rectangular mass and an atrium piercing through; this is the only space along the main façade where viewers on all floors have a view to the site at the same angle. On the West side, each floor is sliced at a different angle thus creating a slightly different view of the site while also creating elevated outdoor spaces; each of these floors host a different creative program like painting and ceramics. These outdoor spaces can serve as lounge spaces, outdoor galleries or exhibitions and outdoor workspaces for students. On the interior, students can see across the atrium and through openings into other spaces creating a visual connection between themselves as well as creating a space where work is openly viewed and admired. Although visitors are not present to create, a change in perspective can be integral to their curiosity. Art relies so heavily on perspective; in the way it is drawn and especially in the way it is viewed. There are infinite ways to view something, not only art but most things we see and experience in our day to day lives. The OCADU Satellite Campus serves as a reminder that no two people see an object or situation the same way.

YOUTH H O M E L E S S S H E LT E R HEART AND HOME

The Toronto Youth Housing Foundation’s Youth Transitional Housing development aims to provide homeless youth with a sense of place and worth, while promoting the idea of self-sufficiency.

The cafeteria on the first-floor doubles as a soup kitchen so those who need a warm meal but are not staying in the shelter or are not eligible to may still receive help. A greenhouse that utilizes vertical farming methods to grow crops inside the building in order to support the soup kitchen is located along the top three floors of the main façade. The private floors are composed of crisis housing and semiindependent living, each on their own floor, with a buffer floor composed of a gymnasium and a greenhouse maintenance and work room in between the two floors. The greenhouse is maintained by the youth, thus implementing a cycle of responsibility and reward. Through working in the greenhouse and working on themselves, the homeless youth placed in the crisis housing have the opportunity to grow and move towards semi-independent living with an end goal of being able to live a healthy life outside of the shelter.
