MINI COUNTRYMAN: This beautiful looking car is high-tech, roomy and has all the qualities of the old Mini Cooper.

Stylish and sporty Mini Countryman BY SIMON JONES sjones@bermudasun.bm

The Mini Countryman captures all the fantastic qualities of the Mini Cooper and puts it in a perfect family package. The traditional Mini was always seen as a snazzy sportsmobile that was perhaps more suited to a couple or the successful businessman or woman. The Countryman manufactures have adapted, lengthened and widened the two-door version and created a great family car that does not compromise on the

good looks and speed that you would expect from a Mini. It is a great car to drive and a beautiful machine to look at. The big difference with the Countryman is in the space department — there is loads of it. The Countryman is a four-door species with lots of room in the back for a couple of kids and maybe even a dog if you do not mind the hair and a bit of slobber getting on the luxurious leather interior. It is a class E car and boasts a powerful two-litre

Mini Countryman Ultimate Motors 63 Church Street East Telephone: 292-0893 Price: Starts at $62,000 Class: E engine that gives it swift acceleration from a standing start. This new model will set you back around $62,000 from Ultimate Motors in Hamilton. That may sound like a hefty price tag but you need to remember that Minis

boast cutting edge technology and are one of the safest vehicles on the road. The Countryman has done away with a traditional key and replaced it with a button start and disc-shaped ignition trigger. The ‘key’ fits into a little slot by the driver’s knee and a simple press of the start button will see you on your way. Sitting in the front of the Countryman feels a bit like being a pilot. Not only do you have a handbrake that looks more like the take-off lever of a Boeing 747 but you also

READY FOR TAKE-OFF: With its luxurious leather interior, front seat arm rest, aeronautically style handbrake, and Bluetooth capability the Mini Countryman’s interior is bound to impress. have a front seat arm rest and Bluetooth capability too, so you have hands-free access to your cellphone. That is good for lots of reasons — but most importantly you won’t be tempted to put the phone to your ear as you are behind the wheel.

‘The Mini Countryman is a mean looking machine — its block shape design makes it safe and secure while the front grill gives it a bad boy edge.’

Simple at heart Then there is the monster speedometer that is right in the middle of the car — and looks a little bit like a jukebox. But despite these slightly aeronautical features the Countryman is a simple car at heart. It is an automatic vehicle and comes with all the usual ‘mod cons’ like air conditioning, remote windows and power steering. It is easy to manoeuvre in small spaces and shifts

smoothly between the gears. You also have the use of a great stereo system which is iPod compatible. The Mini Countryman is a mean looking machine — its block shape design makes it safe and secure while the front grill gives it a bad boy edge. But essentially it is a cosy

family car. It is fitted with front seat airbags, and just in case you take a while to get used to the bigger size of the Countryman it comes with a park-easy system which beeps with increased frequency to let you know how close you are to the car behind you. There are also rails for a

roof rack to pile all your goodies on if you head out for a day at the beach. And if you are after a little bit of luxury the Countryman comes with seat warmers in the front to ease your aching back on a cold morning. Jesse Graham, manager of Ultimate Motors said: “The Countryman is the car many Mini fans have been waiting for because it fills that gap between the classic Mini and a modern sports activity vehicle. “The two-door Mini isn’t practical for everyone — especially if you have a big family — but the Countryman not only offers the sporty handling that people love about Mini but also the space and functionality you would expect from a much bigger family car.” ■

BMW 1 SERIES CABRIO: You will turn heads driving around Bermuda in this classy BMW convertible.

Cabrio: The ultimate convertible BY SIMON JONES sjones@bermudasun.bm

There is something pretty special about getting behind the wheel of a BMW. To sit in a Cabrio convertible and experience the best in motoring performance as well as driver luxury is an exhilarating feeling. Just being in a car like this is like fulfilling every guy’s boyhood dream. The Cabrio oozes power and class. It combines the bucket seats and speed you would normally associate with a racing machine with the luxury and sophistication of an Armani suit. Every last button and switch of this BMW is a little piece of artistry. The Cabrio settles in the class H category of car

despite being just a twodoor machine. The front seats flip forward to reveal a cosy back seat area that is not overly blessed in space — but could fit two adults in at a pinch. There are little corner windows in the back, which do not open. But if you happen to take a peek out through them you will notice that most people take a moment to stop and stare at the Cabrio as it passes. It is certainly a head-turner, and even more eye-catching when the roof is down. The front seats on the other hand are huge and comfortable — you almost get swallowed up in them as you manoeuvre yourself into the driving position.

BMW Cabrio Ultimate Motors 63 Church Street East Telephone: 292-0893 Price: Starts at $70,000 Class: H

They — like the rest of the interior — are a rich black leather that gives the car a lovely crisp feel. The Cabrio is not cheap, and comes in at around $70,000 from Ultimate Motors in Hamilton. These seats are also extendable to give you the optimum driving position. Couple this with the front seat arm rests and you really feel like the captain of your ship. But that is

only around $10,000 more expensive than the Mini family car — the Countryman — which makes it seem good value for money. But quality and class is not cheap — and with a BMW you get plenty of each as well as the knowledge you are driving around in one of the safest cars on the road. It, of course, comes with the Anti-Lock Braking System and power steering and for a big car picks up pace quickly and handles the road quietly with the minimum fuss. The only thing that did surprise me was how heavy it felt to drive around in. The Cabrio does not labour within the confines of city centres or on windy

THE BERMUDA SUN

roads — but it does feel a little bit like you are in control of a super yacht just skimming over the surface of the road. It comes with an automatic gearbox that you barely realise exists as the gear changes are seamless and difficult to detect. You also get the option of using the Step-tronic system to nudge your way up and down the gears — although there is not a great call for the system on the roads in Bermuda unless you just fancy a bit of fun. It will be no surprise to many that the Cabrio is part of a new breed of car that has give up the traditional “put the key in the ignition and turn”. The so-called key is more like an accessory that you have to use to get inside the vehicle in order for it to start. The thrill of pressing down on a small round button and sparking into action a monster of an engine is not to be underestimated. And while some gadgets

COOL WHEELS: A SPECIAL ADVERTISING SUPPLEMENT

‘. . . you will notice that most people take a moment to stop and stare at the Cabrio as it passes. It is certainly a head turner and even more eye catching when the roof is down.’ and gizmos on new cars may seem a little naff or redundant the push-button start is safe and satisfying. The Cabrio’s stereo system is a little bit like a home entertainment system. The CD player is modern and the sound quality is excellent. The air conditioning system is efficient and effective. But let’s be honest you do not need an excuse to take the top down and you are probably going to perform that simple automated func-

tion given any excuse. It is no myth that BMW make some of the safest cars and put their machines through all manner of motoring tests.

Safety The Cabrio comes with front seat air bags and boasts a re-enforced structure that is practically impregnable. There are also a few nifty little features, which may only be small but make the car what it is. A little light comes on when you pull the vanity

mirror down. You have hands-free capability on the steering wheel as well as a battery charger socket for your phone. All the little things combine to make the Cabrio the ideal package for the successful businessman or woman. It is genuinely a lovely car to drive and sports a range of fancy and functional features which are both useful and pleasing. Jesse Graham, manager of Ultimate Motors said: “It not only looks classy and drives with that smooth power and control you expect from a BMW, but there’s a lot of technological innovation you don’t see. “BMW’s EfficientDynamics system, for example, uses low-friction components, better aerodynamics and battery energy regeneration to cut fuel consumption and CO2 emissions while at the same time improving the dynamic performance you want from a sports car.” ■

CHEVROLET SPARK: The upgraded model is fuel-efficient and an ideal runaround car for the island’s roads.

Practical and reliable the Chevy Spark BY SIMON JONES sjones@bermudasun.bm

There is a new Chevy Spark in town. The economical, nononsense family car has been upgraded again by Chevrolet and it hit the showroom floors at the beginning of March. It is a class B car so will only set you back around $380 when it comes to relicensing it every year. This 2011 model comes in manual or automatic and is a four-door variety with plenty of space throughout. The automatic version costs $21,500 while the manual model comes in at

around $19,000. Although the engine is only a 1000cc it is quick through the turns, easy to handle and has good acceleration from a standing start. It feels smooth and comfortable to drive and in many ways is the ideal runaround for a place like Bermuda. The new Spark is economical — it does around 20km to the litre. It is also simple and versatile. It would suit a family as much as it would suit a young professional couple. There is plenty of space in this car for a few kids to fit in the back and the trunk is a good size to carry around everything you need

for a trip to the beach or a journey home from the supermarket. The Spark boasts plenty of legroom in the back and the roof is nice and high so you do not feel cramped or squashed. It also has plenty of little cubbyholes where you can store your sunglasses,

credit cards or morning coffee. The long reclining windscreen gives you an excellent view of the road and power steering makes parking and manoeuvring in heavy traffic a doddle. This new Chevy is compact and robust and looks a little bit like a space buggy. It comes complete with roof rack rails, alloy wheels, fog lamps and a host of extra accessories. You have the benefit of electric windows in the front and the back as well as air conditioning and heating depending on the season. The automatic gearbox is basic but effective. There is

no jerking through the gears — the change up and change down is controlled and barely noticeable. The CD player is also tuned into an iPod adapter — so you get a choice of radio, CD or iPod when you are on the road. The Spark is not trying to be something it is not.

Functional

‘It feels smooth and comfortable to drive and in many ways is the ideal runaround for a place like Bermuda . . . The new Spark is economical — it does around 20km to the litre.’

If you are looking for a functional car that is not full of fancy frills then it will be right up your street. It is smart and clean inside. The dark fabric of the chairs goes well with the black vinyl finish. It boasts keyless entry and a simple steering wheel with two paddles for indicating and switching your wipers on. Perhaps the most frivolous feature on the new Spark is the driver’s dash — or at least the lack of it. Sure you have the speedometer — which usefully comes in kilometres

per hour rather than miles per hour so you have no excuse if you get caught speeding. But strapped on to the side of this disc-shaped speedo is a unique Formula One-esque addition. The rectangular digital display is all light and action when you hit the road. It details fuel level,

revs, temperature, time and all manner of hazard warning lights if you were to run out of oil or overheat for example. It is a nice little addition — and not too tacky. Overall the Spark is great little runaround. It is economical and will appeal to a variety of people who want a car for purely

functional reasons. Amy Greenslade from Rayclan Chevrolet said: “The Spark has always been a popular car for us. “I think a lot of people like it because it is practical and reliable. “The new Spark follows in the same kind of mould. “It has a few added extras but at the end of the day it is a good car that does not cost an arm and a leg to buy or to run. “We won’t be getting this vehicle in until the beginning of March but we have high hopes that it’s going to be a popular model. “In these times when people are trying to cut back on their spending and save a few pennies this might just be the solution to all their wishes.” Rayclan Cheverolet is based at 4 Addendum Lane South in Pembroke. PUNTO EVO: This model has the innovative MultiAir engine which allows direct control of air and combustion without a conventional throttle. It has the effect of reducing fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by 10 per cent and at the same time improves power by the same amount.

New MultiAir engine for Punto Evo BY SIMON JONES sjones@bermudasun.bm

The Punto Evo is the latest in a long line of Punto models to come off the Fiat manufacturing conveyor belt. Puntos have always been known as reliable and economic family cars that tick all the boxes. The Evo takes all the traditional qualities of a Punto and wraps them up in a sleeker sportier package. It is not overly flashy and is a traditional key ignition start — but it is a great looking car. The front-end headlights are more pronounced and high-tech and a revised bumper provides better protection in the event of a collision. The side profile

While the distinctive taillight clusters include Lshaped sidelights which give it a sharper look. Inside there is plenty of polish and laminate that give you the impression of being in far more luxurious car. The Fiat Evo is a 2010

model. It also offers Start&Stop, the system that switches off and restarts the engine in stop-and-go traffic. Start&Stop has been introduced as standard on all Euro5 petrol and diesel engines. It is a four-door vehicle with plenty of space up front and in the back for the children. Five people could fit in this car without being too squashed. But it also enjoys

the cheaper status of being a class E vehicle. This means it will cost you around $945 when it is time to licence it again. To drive this new Fiat away will cost you just shy of $30,000 at Bermuda Motors in Hamilton. It comes with an automatic gearbox to suit the island’s roads. It is perhaps not as smooth through the gears as a Kia or the new Mini

MITSUBISHI ASX: It drives smoothly and its high driving position gives an excellent view of the road

Brilliant ride in the stylish ASX BY SIMON JONES sjones@bermudasun.bm

You would have to go a long way to find a better Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) than the Mitsubishi ASX. It looks great, it drives brilliantly and sitting inside this spacious machine is like being in your own bubble. Your driving position is high above the outside traffic, which gives you an excellent view of the road. And you can hardly hear the hum of the engine let alone the world outside as you cruise about. The ASX comes with stacks of little gizmos and high-tech accessories, that are both useful and fun to play with. Unfortunately, quality comes at a price — but not at an extortionate one in this case.

‘And you can hardly hear the hum of the engine let alone the world outside as you cruise about.’ This new four door Mitsubishi will set you back $50,000. It is a class G car so will cost you around $1,270 or thereabouts to licence it on a yearly basis. This SUV offers you the choice of automatic gearbox or Step-tronic to control its powerful two-litre fuelinjected engine. The Rockford Fosgate Premium sound system is a work of musical art. nine speakers throughout the car and exceptional sound quality. The stereo can also be controlled by buttons on the steering wheel. The ASX is

all about space for all the family but it does not neglect driver comfort. There is a massive boot space and the back seats fold down to give you even more room. You can also pop a roof rack on this versatile vehicle too. The steering wheel unit can be manoeuvred in and out as well as up and down to suit the driver. Power steering makes controlling this big beast easy as well as exciting. It also boasts power wing mirrors that fold in nicely when you lock up the car. Driving it you are left with the feeling that you are almost floating across the tarmac because the ride is so smooth. On top of the fantastic stereo there is an audio jack and USB point in the armrest to plug in your iPod and other instruments. The ASX is a solid streamlined machine that prides itself on safety and security. It comes with a back-up sensor to help parking its considerable behind, seven air bags and an Anti-Lock Braking System. There are alloy wheels, front and rear seat belts, and enough cup holders to

have a small picnic. The driver dashboard is liquid crystal and exceptionally user-friendly. It details all the usual suspects but the info button also gives you a more detailed breakdown of fuel consumption, trip time and other functions. The ASX comes in a range of striking colours including white, titanium grey, cosmic blue, kawasemi blue, cool silver, red, black, quartz and brown. KIA CERATO: The Cerato is a brand new model that has recently arrived on the island and is available at Bermuda Motors.

Kia Cerato: Smooth, smart and sporty BY SIMON JONES sjones@bermudasun.bm

The Kia Cerato is a cracking machine full of state-ofthe-art gadgets and accessories such as its rear view camera function. But more importantly it is a real driver’s car that is pleasure to take for a spin. It is the kind of vehicle that you go for a drive in simply because you fancy a drive. And the experience leaves you with a satisfied smile creeping across your face. The Cerato is a class H car — which is a little surprising — as it does not look like a big family saloon at

first glance. But it boasts a powerful two-litre engine, a plush leather interior and plenty of space for the blossoming family. The Cerato is a brand new Kia model that has only just arrived on the island and is currently in the show room of Bermuda Motors in Hamilton. It starts at $36,000 and you get good value for your dollar with Kia. The automatic gearbox suits Bermuda’s roads and takes the stress out of shifting up and down the gears in heavy traffic or the open road. If you want a little bit more control this Kia offers

This is a great little feature which makes parking and reversing around a corner much easier and a lot safer too. Another great feature this Kia sports is the push button start. There is no traditional turn of the key in the ignition. The keys you get when you buy this Kia are not keys at all — they are a bit like plastic tokens. The Cerato’s steering wheel offers you a couple of extra accessories on top of the indicator, lights and windscreen wiper paddles. There is a gear paddle you can use if you are in Steptronic mode. And you can also change your stereo settings without taking your hands too far away from the steering wheel. Kias always come complete with the latest in driving technology and the Cerato is no different. It offers a Bluetooth hands-free function for your cellphone. That means you can chat and drive safely and will not succumb to the temptation of putting your Blackberry to your ear when it rings. It also boasts a USB connection socket for your lap-

What’s cool Much like clothes and music, young people often dictate what’s ‘cool” in the world of motorbikes. Many young people in Bermuda, especially men, like a flashy ride and the more unique the bike is, the better. With its stylish body and vibrant colours, the Yamaha Sniper 135 is a very popular model among young guys. It gives the rider plenty of power and a true motorcycle experience with its four-speed manual shift. You can get the bike right off the floor in bright yellow, which is the special fiftieth anniversary colour or blue. Many riders, though, prefer to deck out their bikes with a variety of cover parts and decals, which are available with lively graphics and even sports team themes.

What’s popular One of the most popular scooters right now is the Yamaha Nouvo Z. It’s fully automatic with an electric start and large 16-inch wheels, so it’s easy to ride, and its long seat provides a comfortable space for passengers. For those who want a distinctive look, these bikes can also be fitted with accessories such as rims, which come in a variety of colours and styles from those which bear the Yamaha insignia to others that feature individual spokes to give the bike a retro feel.

What’s new The Yamaha Nouvo Elegance, which is the big brother to the Nouvo Z,

provides the same comfort with a bit more horsepower, and the latest models come in new, vivid colour combinations, such as eyecatching orange, black and white. Like other bikes in the shop, the Nouvo Elegance can be customised. For example, some riders like to soup up their bikes with aftermarket exhaust pipes that provide more performance and a bolder revving sound.

What’s practical For the more mature rider, the Yamaha Cygnus X is quite popular. It’s the bike of choice for many businessmen and women. If there were one word to describe the Cygnus X, it would be storage. The bike has a giant, open floorboard as well as a ton of underthe-seat storage. Since the gas tank is not located under the seat, riders can even transport food in the seat storage compartment without the worry of contamination. The Cygnus X is fuel efficient, and for easy parking the bike has a side stand with a safety switch that cuts the motor or prevents it from starting should the rider forget to put the stand up.

YAMAHA NOUVO ELEGANCE: Has more horsepower than the Nouvo Z but provides the same comfort

What’s a good deal Bermuda has many expats working on the island for indefinite amounts of time. Some may stay as little as a year or less. With their uncertain futures, many just need a low-priced vehicle in which to get around, so they choose the Yamaha Jog 100. It’s lightweight and easy to drive for those new to riding, plus it comes with a carrier.

What’s cute One model that is popular with women is the Yamaha Fino 115. Many riders enjoy the retro look, small size and the fun colours, including pink. Because of its retro styling, adding chrome parts to the bike is a common way to customise it. In fact, there is a completely tricked out Fino on display

expenditure so make sure to do your research before you buy to find the model that best suits your style. ■

Ten Commandments of defensive driving COPY SUPPLIED BY BERMUDA ROAD SAFETY COUNCIL

1. Be attentive Always pay attention and check your side mirrors. Look far enough ahead to see other cars, not just the one in front of you. Always be alert especially near intersections and pay attention to traffic signals and road signs. If the sign reads “slippery when wet”, slow down.

2. Give way In any situation where another vehicle may cause a collision or appears to be creating a hazard, it is wiser to give way. It pays to be forgiving and calm when you are on the road.

3. Don’t trust the other driver Don’t trust the other driver. You never really know

■ ISTOCK PHOTOS

STOP THIS: Texting or using a mobile phone while driving is a dangerous practice. what the other driver is thinking or what he/she may do. It is better to pay atten-

tion and be alert at all times.

4. No alcohol – period! Don’t drink and drive at anytime! It is proven that driving drunk is extremely dangerous, so it makes sense not to drink and drive at all.

Trying to beat a red light is never a good idea. You run the risk of causing a collision, injuring yourself and others, or receiving a ticket from the police. It’s just not worth it.

5. Buckle up for safety

8. Be cool

Use your seatbelt. It is the law and it is a simple safety feature of all modern vehicles. Remember that children should be the proper child safety restraint (rear-facing baby seat, forward-facing child seat, booster child/chair) – always placed in the rear seat of the vehicle.

If someone overtakes or somebody honks . . . be cool. It is not the end of the world as being defensive is always better and makes for a smoother, safer drive.

6. Wear a helmet correctly at all times

BUCKLE UP: Fasten your seat belt for your own safety and make sure children travelling with you have theirs fastened as well.

7. Never try to beat the light

Motorcyclists, always make sure you wear your helmets correctly. Countless injuries each year are a direct result from collisions which involve motorcycles. A large majority of the fatal collisions in Bermuda involve motorcyclists, thus the need to wear your helmet correctly all the time.

9. Use signals Use your indicators and lights properly to relay your intentions to other vehicles. This allows you to plan ahead to ensure a safe drive. Additionally, you help to alert other vehicles so they can avoid collisions and so called fender-benders.

10. Take it slow – be calm A few minutes of waiting is better than one minute of rage on the road. Defensive driving is all about being patient. Keeping alert and remembering these simple defensive driving tips will go a long way to help you enjoy driving more. ■

PEUGEOT 207CC: This sleek and compact soft top is a class E car and is priced around $51,000.

The beautifully crafted Peugeot 207CC BY SIMON JONES sjones@bermudasun.bm

The new Peugeot 207CC is a beautifully crafted vehicle. With its sleek curves, compact build and sumptuous soft-top this car is a guaranteed head-turner. But it’s not all about the looks — this Peugeot has all the state of the art accessories and safety features you could ask for. And what it lacks in space in its rather cramped back seats it more than makes up for in its great handling and drive-ability.

Peugeot 207CC Continental Motors 159 North Shore Road, Devonshire Telephone: 292-8891 Price: Starts at $51,000 Class: E

The 207CC is a class E car, which means it will set you back around $945 when you come to licence it each year. And as far as initial outlay you are looking at a price tag that starts at $51,000 if you pop down to

Continental Motors on North Shore Road in Devonshire. It is one of those cars that you fall in love with as soon as you get behind the wheel. Unfortunately when I got in the 207 it was raining so there was no opportunity to take the roof down and cruise around in real style. Apparently the top folds back into the boot at the press of a button in one smooth movement that takes no more than 20 seconds. But when you get behind the wheel in the comfortable black leather bucket

seats you feel like you’ve assumed a racing position. The front seats are all about comfort. They can be raised and lowered by pumping a lever down by your side. And the steering wheel itself can be adjusted up and down as well as in and out – so you can achieve your perfect driving position. It is old school in as much as it is a key start — none of this button ignition and fancy key that you get in Minis and BMWs. Although the 207 does boast a keyless entry and

has the added feature of automatic locking once you have driven off to keep everyone in the car safe and sound. There are also front seat airbags for the driver and the passenger. And if you can fit a couple of small people in the back seats — then they also have the benefit of airbags, which pop out from the frame of the car. When it comes to actually driving this Peugeot it is incredibly smooth over the road surface and grips the tarmac well as you take in steep bends. Because it’s such a robust compact little car it feels like it is in tune with the road.

Vision You have great vision from the driving seat — whether the roof is up or down — owing to the extended windscreen and electric windows in the front. The gear changes are seamless with the automatic transmition. It is quite comfortable cruising along the roads in third and fourth gear, which makes it ideal for Bermuda. And what is more if you fancy a change you can always nudge your way up and down the gears with the Step-tronic alternative. There are plenty of little luxuries in this car too. You can keep your drinks nice and cool in an airconditioned glove box. There are even cup holders in the glove box to put your chilled beverage in too. The glove box has one last little trick — it also contains an iPod adapter so you can stream your favourite tunes into the car’s CD stereo system. The Peugeot 207CC has great temperature control. Of course you can put the roof up or take it down

depending on the weather. But on top of this you also have dual air-conditioning in the front, which comes as standard with many Peugeots — and it allows the driver and passenger to control their own temperature. If it is a cold morning or you have a spot of backache — then you’ll find a button on the side of the seat, which operates the seat warmer control.

Temperature control There are three different levels of warmth to choose from and it is pretty remarkable how quickly your seat warms up. Space is often an issue with a soft top — and it’s fair to say it would be a squeeze to get two little people in the back of the Peugeot 207CC. Having said that, the front bucket seats give you loads of leg space and the trunk is surprisingly roomy. Well that is until the roof folds away into it when the amount of space is effectively halved. This nippy little car sports a few more funky features. There is a parking alert system, which beeps to tell you how close you are to hitting the neighbouring car or wall. While the rear view mirror has a nifty button that dims that lights of cars and bikes that steam up behind you. The wing mirrors are

remotely controlled from inside the car and the steering wheel boasts four paddles instead of the traditional two. There are obviously the indicator and wipers levers — but you also have control of the speed limiter and the stereo at your finger tips also. With the 207 soft top you get a central dashboard that tells you the time, tempera-

ture and date, as well as what radio station you are tuned into. While the driver’s dash gives you all the usual bunff detailing speed, revs, fuel level and temp. Venetia Stirling from Continental Motors said: “I would say this car suits a professional person or a couple whose children have grown up and left home. “It has all the modern technology you need and it’s a fun car to drive around in, especially when the sun is out and you can put the top down. “It’s obviously not a family car but would be perfect for people who are established in life and have always wanted a nice little sports car to drive around in.” ■

SKODIA FABIA COMBI: This value for money famly car starts at around $35,000 from HWP in Pembroke.

Economical Combi the ideal family car BY SIMON JONES sjones@bermudasun.bm

The new Skoda Fabia Combi is the perfect family car for Bermuda. There is buckets of space in the back for the kids and plenty of trunk room for a couple of dogs too. If dogs are not your cup of tea then this Skoda will accommodate a healthy family shop or all the things you might need for a trip to the beach at the weekend. Although the Fabia Combi might be functional and very much family orientated this stationwagon does not compromise on class either. The rich leather interior and polished finish make it a good looking machine both inside and out. There are plenty of surprises on board too. Perhaps the best surprise is the price — the Combi starts at $35,000 from HWP in Pembroke, which is great value for money, especially in Bermuda. It’s easy to drive around

idea of how close you are to nearby objects. It is an extremely useful feature on a car that is longer than the average vehicle. The Fabia Combi is a G class vehicle and so it will set you back around $1,273 at licensing time. It boasts four doors and a hatchback trunk as well as roof rack potential. The back seats also fold down if you need to transport furniture or large objects. There is a media hook up area under the glove box that you can plug your iPod or MP3 player into and a good CD and radio stereo system. The 1.6-litre fuel

ROOMSTER: The versatile Skoda Roomster is an affordable commercial vehicle that could easily double as a family car.

Roomster: Commercial or family option BY SIMON JONES sjones@bermudasun.bm

As its name suggests the Skoda Roomster is all about the room. But it is also an incredibly versatile vehicle too. So much so in fact that it would be equally at home being a family car as a commercial vehicle. In the past, and especially in the U.K., the Skoda brand has been the butt of many a schoolboy joke. But today it is widely accepted that the car manufacturer is right at the top for affordability as well as performance and safety. The Roomster is no different and balances a fine finish with functional features. The private car version is a class F vehicle, which costs just shy of $1,100 to licence every year. And to drive away in this Skoda from HWP in Pembroke will cost you around the $39,000 mark. It

comes with automatic gears and leather interior. It is a four-door vehicle, with side handles for the back seats as well as an extra little back window. Lots of glass to see out of and lots of space to carry all your belongings.

Roomy The back seats can be moved forward or back or even removed completely if you have to transport a peculiar shaped object. If you were going to use the Roomster as a commercial vehicle the option of more space in the back makes it ideal for a small

business vehicle — whether it is an indoor or outdoor company. This Skoda is also a very comfortable car to drive. It comes with traction control and power steering. There are armrests in the front and the steering wheel can be tilted up and down as well as in and out.

Power The 1.6-litre fuel injection engine gives you plenty of power and a smooth and controlled ride. The stereo systems allows for CDs and radio and can be controlled by buttons on the steering wheel. And you can also plug your iPod into the Aux Input if you fancy a change. Air conditioning, power windows and keyless entry come as standard with this vehicle. And the driver’s seat can be adjusted as well as warmed up at the flick of a switch. This Skoda also

comes with air bags and front and rear seat belts. The Roomster is available in seven colours: white, silver, grey, beige, blue, black and red, and comes with a two year warranty from HWP. The dealership is also currently offering a comprehensive vehicle maintenance and repair package called SMARTChoice. The programme covers the cost of all routine maintenance and all necessary labour, parts, oil and lubricants. It varies in price depending how long you sign up for it. The three-year coverage costs $2,995, the twoyear coverage costs $1,850 while a one-year programme costs $1,145. Tony Martin from HWP said: “The SMARTChoice maintenance and repair package is designed to give you peace of mind and worry-free driving with your new HWP vehicle.” ■

New Peugeot models at Wheels Cycles BY JACK GARSTANG jgarstang@bermudasun.bm

Wheels Cycles in Dundonald Street have new additions to their motorcycle range with the arrival early this year of the Peugeot Tweet and the new Vivacity. Steven Panchaud, general manager at Wheels Cycles, said: “The Tweet models are very reasonably priced at the moment with the 50cc priced at $2,395 and the 125cc at $2,895.” The Tweet models tend to go back to basics, Mr. Panchaud explained, in the sense that “they stay away from a lot of electronics and they have mechanical speedos which tend to be more reliable.” He believes this is a good thing as “electronics can have issues over the long term with the salt environment on the island”. He likened the Tweet to the old Honda Scoopy and

would be comfortable on it.” Further, he rides one himself and says that “it has been pretty good so far”. One of the major assets of the Tweet range is the large 16-inch wheel, which affords greater stability and safety. The sitting position on the scooter is no more than 800mm high and with its streamlined seat makes it easy to put both feet on the ground. It is light, too, only 109 kg for the 125cc model, making it easy to control for smaller riders. Although it is compact it can easily hold a passenger with their feet safely wedged on the aluminium foldaway footrests. The 125cc has an air cooled 4-stroke single cylinder engine, a 5.5-litre fuel tank, 226mm diameter front and rear disc brakes (the 50cc has a break drum on back), has ample storage under the seat and in the glove box, and an antitheft system steering lock. Mr Panchaud said the Tweet antitheft system “is basically a switch lock to deactivate the ignition under the seat. If hotwired it still won’t start.” Mr. Panchaud, comment-

ing on his experience of riding the Tweet 125cc, said the mileage he is getting is good so far. “The tank holds about eight dollars of gas roughly, so it is a decent sized tank, and so far I have been getting between a 100 and 140 kilometres to the tank.” The other new models at Wheels Cycles are the new Vivacity 50cc and 125cc. The Vivacity 125cc is described as a practical and functional vehicle. The seat height does not exceed 786mm so the rider can easily put both feet on the ground. Its ease of handling and agility is facilitated by sitting the tank, which has 40 per cent more capacity than the older model, under the floor pan which causes the bike to have a lower centre of gravity. a 12-volt socket under the seat, an antitheft system and steering lock. The Vivacity 125cc will cost you $3,000 and the 50cc $2,595. In the Peugeot range available at Wheels Cycles is the LXR 125cc, which is a compact big wheel scooter that is popular in Italy, owing to its superior handling over poorly maintained surfaces and its ease of manoeuverability in crowded city streets, “benefits that are equally relevant to Bermudas roads”, Mr. Panchaud said. A four-valve liquid cooled 4-stroke engine drives the LXR 125cc; it has a seat height of 795mm and has storage space under the seat. Its 16-inch wheels work with twin rear shock absorbers to give a comfortable ride and reassuring handling, while stopping power is provided by 220mm disc brakes front and rear. A popular bike at Wheels Cycles is the Peugeot SumUp 125cc, which is equipped with 13-inch wheels, has an air-cooled 4-stroke engine, and finds a neat balance between stability and manoeuverability. At 115 kg it is one of the lighter scooters in its class. Peugeot prides itself on this bike being big on com-

Lifesaving advice for motorcyclists COPY SUPPLIED BY BERMUDA ROAD SAFETY COUNCIL ■

Make eye contact: Never assume others see you. Always try to make eye contact with drivers who may be about to pull into your path. ■ Read ‘vehicle language’: Even when drivers, cyclists and pedestrians do see you approaching, they often misjudge your distance and speed. Don’t rely on them. ■ Watch out for rightturning vehicles at intersections: Getting hit by an oncoming vehicle that’s turning right is the most common type of motorcycle crash. ■ Check behind when turning left: Watch your mirrors and make sure you have plenty of space behind. The drivers behind might not slow down for you. ■ Look out for hazardous road conditions: Wet roads, fluid spills, sand, gravel, potholes and other road-surface hazards reduce your traction. They cause many falls. ■ Take it easy on the curves: Many crashes happen there. You might overshoot the road or cross the centre line and get hit by oncom-

Jeans give little protection. Avoid riding in lightweight pants or shorts. ride in lightweight pants or shorts. Additionally, wear the proper footwear (sneakers, closed-toe shoes) — never flip-flops or bare feet. ■ Protect your eyes and face: Constant wind can make your eyes water, preventing you from spotting hazards. Flying insects, dust and debris can hurt your eyes and face. The best protection is a full-face helmet with a builtin face shield. ■ Be visible — wear bright, reflective clothing: Add extra reflective material to it or wear a reflective vest. Likewise, buy a bright coloured helmet and stick reflective tape to the back and sides. Always keep your headlights on. Ride in the lane position where other drivers can easily see you and you have room to manoeuvre. Avoid all other vehicles’ blind spots. ■

Car buying mistakes result in buyers’ remorse BY HONEY ADAMS There is quite a lot to consider when buying a new car and so much essential information that consumers need before making a choice. Remember, this is large purchase and your new car decision should be a calculated one. Here are a few common mistakes that car buyers make.

Mistake No. 1: Falling in love It is very common for consumers to buy a car because they ‘just love it’. Whether it is considered a status symbol with new high-tech features or a style and colour that they just can’t resist, people will develop a crush on a car and decide that they just have to have it. This is buying based on emotion — following your heart and not your head. Before you go to the car showroom, be keenly aware of your weaknesses and have a plan on how to talk to the salesperson without using phrases like ‘I just love this car’ or ‘it is so me’ and definitely not ‘I just have to have it’. Car salesmen are trained to sell you a car based on your emotions and they can spot your weaknesses a mile

LOVE THAT CAR: Falling in love with a car is a mistake as emotion can cloud your judgement. away. Getting excited is not uncommon but allow yourself time to do proper research and resist giving in to your emotions.

Mistake No. 2: Not researching This is a common mistake, especially with consumers who buy on impulse. Begin your car search long before you need one so

that you don’t end up buying the wrong car because of time constraints. Review performance and maintenance ratings on the vehicle: there are websites that provide reviews on automobiles, I suggest the following: www.consumer reports.org, www.carand driver.com, www.motor trend.com Put together a spreadsheet of the different cars

that you are interested in. Compare the important facts on each car — safety rating, engine size, mileage, inside capacity, parts availability, general maintenance requirements, where manufactured, service history, and so on.

Mistake No. 3: Consider the ongoing costs Don’t make the mistake of basing your decision on what you can afford to pay at the time of purchase and not budgeting for the length of time you will most likely own the car. There are ongoing expenses that you must consider, such as general maintenance, yearly licensing and insurance fees. If you are taking out a loan for your car your monthly payments may seem appealing at the time, but will you be able to manage this expense if your income changes? Additionally, depending on the length of the loan will the interest and fees result in you overpaying for the car?

Buying the Deal I read somewhere recently that the deal is only as good as the car attached to it — this is so true. If you can’t get parts for it or get quality affordable repairs, is it really a deal? Again, research the vehicle on the Internet, with local insurance companies, repair shops and people who own the same make and model. Find out the performance and maintenance ratings on the car. In the long run you are better off paying a little more for reliability and quality after sales service. Three of FIGO’s key features: space, space and space

How come a car so compact on the outside is so spacious on the inside? You engineer it so efficiently and ergonomically, it almost violates the laws of physics. You get more space for legs, heads and luggage in a package that’s almost ridiculously affordable. Which is important, because FIGO wants to set you free, not tie you down.

%()25( <28 %8< $ 1(: &$5 There are four things you must consider: affordability, needs vs. wants, vehicle, maintenance and spare parts. Some points to consider are: s Will you need a bank loan? s Will the money come from your savings? s What will the monthly payments be on the amount borrowed, including the interest charges? s What are the contract conditions and penalty fees? Don’t forget the cost of the licensing and insurance fee. In Bermuda, the size of the vehicle determines what class it will be. Class size runs from A to H, with A being the smallest and H being the largest. The larger the vehicle the more you pay for the annual licensing fee. You must know how much you can spend before you can determine what you can afford. You don’t want to get stuck making vehicle payments that will leave you scrounging for rent money for three or four years. Next, decide what the most important needs for the vehicle are.
