EASTER AT BERKELEY HALL

KNOW YOUR NATURE COMEDIAN JIMMY KEYS LADIES LUNCHEON: SHOP FOR GOOD!

mar/apr 2024

Spring is nearly here, and with it comes many of our favorite Club traditions, from our Berkeley Hall-style Easter Celebration to the Mixed MemberMember!

From the Savannah Gardens to our Tom Fazio courses, it’s wonderful to see the Lowcountry coming into bloom. In this issue, we showcase the Lowcountry’s bountiful offerings, from an afternoon social down at the River Park with Capt. Amber Kuehn, to locally sourced Farm to Fork dining, and a spring Picnic in the Savannah Gardens.

Gorgeous weather beckons us outside to enjoy golf, and we have a full season of tournaments, Golf Academy golf schools and our popular junior golf programs for all to enjoy.

Momentum at the Club continues throughout the community with a robust number of home builds, and an ongoing commitment from builders including Nest Coastal Homes’ recent purchase of nine additional lots. We already have new plans through the ARB this spring, and we have a great story to tell, as we move towards 500 homes.

FROM THE CLUBHOUSE

Our annual Member Survey helps us gather your valuable input that shapes our goals and assists in allocating capital funds. I’d like to thank Membership for your incredible response, as nearly 600 Members shared their thoughts on where we’re strongest, and what we can enhance and build upon for the best Member experience.

Garnering “Best in Class” Member

Satisfaction is a true Club honor we can all share together, and with overall Member satisfaction over 94%, we’re pleased to know we’re on the right path. Golfers made up 87% of survey respondents, and this amenity also received very high satisfaction scores, from overall course condition to practice facilities, professional staff, pro shop, and instruction.

On the culinary side, 95% of respondents dined with us over the past year, and gave us high marks for service staff, ambiance, and table availability. Our 2024 kitchen renovation should help us achieve even higher levels, along with renovations slated for the Berkeley Room and Tap Room and the North Course.

It’s an exciting time as we reach Club goals that have been years in the making, and we couldn’t do it without your support!

As we get ready to welcome members and family here to enjoy a weekend of Easter festivities, from Easter Egg Hunts to our Lowcountry Boil & Clambake and fabulous Easter Brunch, I look forward to celebrating the best of the season with all of you!

CONGRATS TO KRISTA DUNTON 2023 GRAA Top 100 Teacher

Congratulations to Krista Dunton, Berkeley Hall Director of Instruction, recently named among the prestigious 2023 GRAA Top 100 Growth of the Game Teaching Professionals.

Golf Range Association of America (GRAA) award recipients are recognized for teaching technical aspects of golf along with physical and mental facets of the game.

Motivating their students to be better every day, GRAA recipients are the trusted stewards of the game, and it’s no surprise Krista adds this to her long list of accolades as former LPGA National Teacher of the Year, LPGA Top 50 Teacher, Golf Digest’s 2024 Best in State, and multiple listings as a Top 100 Instructor and Top 100 Teacher in America by Golf Digest and Golf Magazine.

The Berkeley Hall Charity Mingle held in January was a great success. Thanks to the new exhibition-style format, members were able to easily speak with all the non-profits and find out first-hand what our Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation grants enable them to do: Food, Housing, Medical Care and more.

Non-profit leaders also shared how meaningful it was for them to have the opportunity to talk about their programs in depth and greatly appreciated the strong turnout and support from our Berkeley Hall community.

Thanks to your extraordinary generosity, the Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation has raised $3M for

GRANT RECIPIENTS

Lowcountry charities since its inception in 2008. Each year, monies raised at the annual Charity Cup event fund the following year's grant cycle. In December, BHCF approved $472,000 to fund 26 grants for 24 non-profits, that will have a considerable impact on improving the lives of many Bluffton residents.

“The First Ladies”

A novel about the extraordinary partnership between First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and civil rights activist Mary McLeod Bethune – an unlikely friendship that changed the world, from the New York Times bestselling authors of the Good Morning America Book Club pick “The Personal Librarian.”

The daughter of formerly enslaved parents, Mary McLeod Bethune refuses to back down as white supremacists attempt to thwart her work. She marches on as an activist and educator, and as her reputation grows she becomes a celebrity, revered by titans of business and recognized by U.S. Presidents. Eleanor Roosevelt herself is eager to make her acquaintance. Initially drawn together by shared beliefs in women’s rights and the power of education, Mary and Eleanor become fast friends confiding their secrets, hopes and dreams – and holding each other’s hands through tragedy and triumph.

Review: Penguin & Random House

“Braiding Sweetgrass”

“We spill over into the world and the world spills over into us.” Since Robin Wall Kimmerer published Braiding Sweetgrass eight years ago, the essay collection has topped charts across the country. Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants is a call to action that combines memoir, Indigenous storytelling, and scientific writing. Kimmerer, a botanist and member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, examines the relationships people have with the land from a traditional and scientific view, prompting us to do the same.

Powerfully illustrated in “The Honorable Harvest,” we walk with her as she forages for wild leeks in preparation for a dinner to celebrate her daughters’ return home. Kimmerer teaches us that our relationship to our living environment is a “web of reciprocity, of giving and taking.”

ON THE GREENS: LOOK AHEAD. A ADAM

s we head into the North Course closure in a few months, one aspect of the North Course will not change, the greens. We will not be doing any significant renovation to those surfaces. The North Course greens are a variety of ultra dwarf bermudagrass called Champion. In contrast, the South Course putting surfaces are a variety of ultra dwarf bermudagrass called Tifeagle. Why the difference? The South Course greens were originally planted when the South Course was constructed. The North Course greens were originally Crenshaw Bentgrass and were converted in the summer of 2013 to Champion Bermudagrass. At the time Champion was being sold as a very cost-effective way to convert your greens from the older variety of bentgrass or the older varieties of ultra dwarf bermudagrass, such as Tifdwarf, because it is a very aggressive lateral grower. Champion was the golf standard of no-til renovations at the time the club decided to convert from bentgrass. There are several different methods to renovate greens, but the three main ones are no-till conversion, lift conversion, and the other is a full core-out.

No-till Conversion:

• Kill the existing grass

• Vertiutting and aerating aggressively

We look forward to a successful North Course closure this summer!

• Followed by sprig

• Topdressing, fertilize, water, and mow to establish new green

Lift Conversion:

• Kill and remove existing grass

• Remove 4-6 inches of organic layer

• Replace 4-6 inches with new sand and amendments

• Sprig new grass

• Topdress, fertilize, water, and mow to establish new green

Core-out Conversion:

• Kill and remove existing grass

• Remove all sand gravel and drainpipe

• Install no drainpipe and gravel layer

• Install new sand to USGA specific depths

• Sprig new grass

• Topdress, fertilize, water, and mow to establish new green When looking at the North Course greens over the last three years, they have performed very well

agronomically through the soil profile. We have tested and used cameras to inspect the drainpipe. We have sent the entire sand profile (20”) off to be tested and it is still performing as a USGA spec green is expected to perform. The surfaces are free of any contamination or mutation of the grass. The decision was made to not spend any resources on greens that are performing to USGA specs and look great on the surface.

Keeping green speeds, smoothness, and firmness between the two different grasses can be a challenge daily. We mow, groom, brush, spray, verticut, and topdress differently. Since Champion is such an aggressive lateral grower, we will focus our aeration during the closure in the top 2-3 inches where we have some thatch accumulation and feel we lose some firmness as compared to the South Course.

We have a new tool from the USGA called the GS3 that we will be using to test smoothness, firmness, and trueness of the green. I think it will be a great addition to our toolbox so we can make the greens between the two courses even more consistent. Hopefully this new device can provide the team with more data, and we can make adjustments, bringing the putting quality between the two grasses to be more consistent on a daily basis. We look forward to a successful North Course closure this summer. Thank you for your support!
