What was the most memorable or meaningful aspect of your time abroad?

What impact did studying abroad have on you? Study Abroad literally transformed my life as it allowed me to experience the beauty of the world from a different perspective. Through Study Abroad, I learned that it is essential to be open-minded as there is always something new to learn when experiencing different cultures.

I bonded really closely with the other Berkeley students in the program, and in the span of two months, we all became really good friends. We basically all travelled through Central Europe together, bonded in our hostels, bonded over our similar struggles of not knowing Czech, and so many other things.

What would you recommend to students considering studying abroad?

What would you recommend to students considering studying abroad?

One of the best decisions I’ve ever made was to attend the Brazil study abroad program, as the experience was better than I would have ever imagined and I experienced the beauty of the world from a different perspective.

I knew I wanted to study abroad, but I didn’t know if I would be able to pay for it. Talking to a financial aid adviser is so important, and it really showed me the amount of grants and scholarships available for low-income students! I was able to get my entire program covered through various grants and scholarships, and there are so many other opportunities as well. So, if you are at all considering it, talk to an advisor, because it may be a lot more accessible than you think!

What helped me to have such an amazing time was the decision to fully allow myself to experience, understand, and immerse myself in the culture, without passing any judgment.

The Global Internships program was amazing, and matched me into my very niche field of interest — City Planning. I didn’t think it was going to be possible, but I had an amazing internship and

learned a ton about this field.

Through my study abroad experience in Brazil, I feel as though I gained family and life long friends, on the other side of the world; I still keep in contact with

many of the Brazilian students I met and I will surely be back to visit them!

Independent Study Abroad Program

Why did you choose your country/program?

What was the biggest challenge/concern of your study abroad experience?

Studying abroad was always one of my top priorities before even coming to college, but as a pre-health student I found it difficult to find time in my schedule to go abroad. It wasn’t until I went to the study abroad office that I found out that there were summer opportunities for even STEM students.

I did not know one person going into my study abroad program. While this was something I wanted in a study abroad experience, I also had some concerns over finding a community of friends and like-minded people. Luckily, on Semester at Sea there were various clubs and groups I could join with people who had similar interests as me.

What impact did studying abroad have on you? Before I studied abroad, I was shy around people I didn’t really know and had trouble being myself the way I am with my friends and family. It took time for me to warm up to people and be myself. It just didn’t feel comfortable. It wasn’t until I went to Dublin that I really opened myself to new opportunities to meet people and really interact with them.

After studying abroad and igniting my passion for international education, I would love to work in another country and experience different cultures. I am totally open to the new opportunities that are available internationally and would like to expand my knowledge. Studying abroad has definitely been one of the most amazing aspects of my time at Cal and has influenced my career choices.

Spending an extended period of time in a country different than your own is an eye-opening experience that no one should pass up. It’s such

It has changed my perspective on a variety of topics ranging from sustainability to the environment to foreign policy. Studying abroad has increased my desire to possibly work abroad one day and pursue a career in foreign diplomacy or international affairs.

Many of my classes at Cal were on international policy, human rights, and global poverty. Semester at Sea allowed me to have the opportunity to immerse myself in what I was
