BENWICK ON FACEBOOK As many of you may have noticed, Benwick now has a page on Facebook. The page will be used to provide information to all his friends, such as upcoming events. I create event listings for any events that do not already have one, and if you are running an event, invite Ben Wick to come, and he will invite all his Benwick friends to attend to. Hopefully, it will help keep in touch with everyone, and become a great way of keeping people up-to-date with information about the village. It will also be where photos are uploaded, and you can tag Ben Wick in any photos of the village you have to share them with everyone in the village! If permission is given, the photos will also be shared on www.lilyholtroad.co.uk. Adam www.facebook.com/benwickvillage 3

2009 saw the return of the Autumn Show to Benwick. For many years this had been an annual and popular event enjoyed by many residents of Benwick who entered their produce and crafts for fun and 2009 was no exception.

While residents and exhibitors had changed somewhat the programme and categories remained very similar and entries were very forthcoming. So with the success of 2009, plans are already underway for 2010. So the first step is the date:

Put it in your diary, then watch this space in future issues of the Benwick Bugle for the programme and categories for 2010. Many categories will remain the same with one or two alterations and additions. Judging and age groups may vary and an afternoon viewing time may be added. So if you enjoyed this year – start planning for next year – who knows, you could be a winner! 4

Rev’d Val Fernanadez, The Rectory, Ingles Lane, Doddington, March, Cambs. PE15 0TE 01354 742715 E.mail: revval@btinternet.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

December 2009 Hello I wonder if you ever reflect on how the media create the culture we tend to accept as ‘the norm.’ We spend so much time making judgements and placing people in boxes - family, background, money, influence or nationality because image tends to be just as important to us as it does with the younger generation and their need to have ‘street cred.’. The word ‘profiling’ or nationality has become part of our language as we use human standards to assess people, inside and out. But the birth of Jesus breaks all these divides and instead speaks of welcome – to the poor, the outcast, the forgotten, the judged – even welcome to us. In Doddington and Wimblington knitted figures of Mary and Joseph will be travelling around the villages staying overnight in a variety of people’s homes (maybe next year Posada can be introduced into Benwick) under the guise of Posada which is the Mexican word for inn. As these figures travel around during Advent it reminds us of the journey Mary and Joseph took to Bethlehem over 2,000 years ago. Advent is a period of preparation, a time of waiting. Children excitedly open the windows on their Advent calendars with the count down to Christmas Day. Advent is also a time for us to look forward expectantly to the second coming of Jesus. Next time he will not be born as a tiny babe in a stable but will come back as the King of Kings. As we wonder if we will ever be organised and ready for Christmas Day do we ever stop and think ‘are we ready for Jesus’ return?’ When Jesus returns he will come and judge us but he will not judge us by human standards. He will look at our hearts to see who we really are. This Christmas spend some time not only celebrating Jesus’ birthday but reflecting on people you may have misjudged during the past year and who may have misjudged you and pray for God’s grace to be at work in their hearts and yours. Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year. Rev’d Val PS We hope you like the enclosed Christmas card from the 3 churches in the Benefice. I would like to say a grateful thank you to all the distributors who so kindly delivered them with your magazine. From the Registers Baptisms and Thanksgivings Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me.” Thomas Dunkley Chelsy & Callum Meads If you would like to know more about our services of Baptism and Thanksgiving please contact Revd Val Fernandez Weddings For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; His faithfulness continues through all generations. New members are asked to be there at 1.45 and the meetings run for 2 hours from 2.p.m. on the first Thursday of each month. Individuals given choice and control over their social care A surprisingly large number of adults need some form of help in their day-to-day life. In Cambridgeshire there are over 16,000 adults who receive social care. This could be due to learning or physical disabilities, poor mental health, or other age-related conditions. Until recently, accessing social care has typically meant receiving one of a small number of pre-commissioned services. Now that is changing. Self-Directed Support is a new way of providing social care to adults living in Cambridgeshire and eligible for support. It involves identifying a Personal Budget, an upfront allocation of funding. This is designed to help people take control over their lives, identify their own needs and the things they want to do and, if they wish, to manage their own support – with help if they need it. In Cambridgeshire, Self-Directed Support is being introduced slowly over a two-year period. It began with a launch and introduction for adults with a learning disability in April 2009, followed by a roll-out to individuals with a physical disability at the end of June. For adults over 65, because of the numbers involved, a phased introduction of Self-Directed Support for older people and older people with mental health need is being implemented. It began in Fenland in September. If you think you are eligible for social care support you should call Cambridgeshire Direct on 0345 045 5202 and ask for an assessment.

Stuff you don't need? Don’t throw it away – give it away! You might not need that old sofa or wheelbarrow any more – but there might be someone just round the corner who does. Or if there’s something you’d like, someone nearby might have one!

ATELIER EAST Promoting and supporting the arts in the Fenland area 2009 has been an amazing year for local arts organisation, Atelier East, and to celebrate they are hosting a Winter Exhibition Party at the Angles Theatre in Wisbech, and everyone is invited! Atelier East exists to promote and support arts and engagement with the arts in the Fenland area. Artistic Director, Karen Harvey, has created a programme of after-school sessions, run by professional artists, called Young Artist's Creative Club where children get the chance to develop their artistic and creative skills in an exciting and friendly environment. Atelier East also work on residency projects and with pre-schools, children's centres and community groups. New additions to the Young Artist's Programme are Dance and Movement sessions, Music Making sessions, and Performing Arts sessions. All sessions are tailored to suit the participants and Atelier East work with all abilities and ages, from 2 years old right up to 92! 2009 has been a year of great creativity and development for Atelier East who have spent their time making sculptures out of rubbish, painting huge murals, having fun at Life Drawing, organising the first ever Photography Festival for Wisbech, presenting some brilliant exhibitions, working with schools, youth groups and community groups and so much more! To show their gratitude to everyone who has supported them and to encourage more people to get involved with the Arts, Atelier East have put together an exhibition for December called Winter Wonderland and they hope that you will join them for the Opening Party on Dec 6th, 6-8pm at the Angles Theatre Wisbech. They'd love to share the evening with you... and the art, live music, food, drink etc! There will be a prize raffle to raise money for Christian Aid, who do great work all year round but the Atelier East team feel that when it comes to Christmas time we are all a bit more reflective about how much we have, and how little others have, they'd like to try and help make a difference. Please RSVP to Atelier East if you'd like to go along and invite friends and family who you think would enjoy a free festive evening with a warm welcome from everyone at Atelier East. If you are an artist interested in exhibiting, a school or community group who would like a free taster session, or you'd just like to find out more please visit www.atelier-east.co.uk, email Karen at info@atelier-east.co.uk or call her on 01945 860422.

DODDINGTON PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP Report of the Committee Meeting held at the Doddington Medical Centre 5th November 2009 Vice Chairman Alan Mayern chaired the meeting on behalf of Chairman Mr Tony Ostermeyer, who was absent due to illness. All remaining nine committee members were present, plus Julie Chapman (Minutes Sec), Dr Hambling and Mrs Welcher for the Practice, and 3 others. The previous minutes were read and it was noted that the cheque previously sent to Porter Nash for items of medical equipment had not been received. The cheque had been cancelled and another sent in its place. Under matters arising, labels for specific use on donated equipment had been received and were shown to the meeting. The Practice will label all such equipment. Angela Whittaker offered 2000 sheets of coloured paper. Reports: No Chairman’s report was presented but the Secretary reported the coordination of committee members’ comments regarding possible changes to the Constitution and these were to be discussed. The Treasurer reported a balance of £3129.65. At this point, Mrs Welcher asked for the Committee to consider purchasing a Leg Ulcer Stool for the Community Nurses at a cost of £225. This was approved. Dr Hambling reported the further delay in the contract being drawn up for the management of the Practice. In his role on the Professional Executive Committee he has been involved in the recruitment of a new chairman for the PCT Clinical Group of South Fenland Review Project. Fenland DC has a government grant of £4.5 million, match-funded by a housing association for a 40-bed sheltered housing complex to be built on the hospital site. It is to include a 10-bed unit to replace the Iceni Unit. It is hoped that by 1 April 2010, a new consultant in palliative care (along with other staff) will be working from the hospital as a new on-site service. The Out-of-Hours Service for calling a doctor has been reviewed by the PCT and an announcement will be made shortly. A comprehensive out-of-hours’ service will be maintained. The committee of the Clinical Group of South Fenland Review Project are looking for a layperson to join them. Dr H asked Pauline Mayern if she would consider the post and she accepted subject to receiving further information on the specifics of the role. Question: “Surgeries are to be paid by the government, £5.25 for every flu jab given. If the contract has not been given to the doctors, (i.e. given to the PCT instead) does this mean they will not receive the money?” Answer: “Yes, this is correct”. Fund Raising Activities : The Flu Jab Day was very successful. Doreen is hopeful that additional prizes for the Christmas raffle will be received and is requesting items for the hamper to be donated. The first Swine Flu Jab day will be on Saturday 14 November 2009 tickets will be sold.

– 9 am to 12 noon. Raffle

Changes to the DPPG constitution The present constitution along with highlighted proposed amendments were discussed and agreed by all committee members present. These will be put to the AGM for ratification on 26th November. Annual General Meeting All officers are requested to submit their reports to the Secretary as soon as possible. The Committee were made aware of those committee members and officers who may not be standing for re-election. Christmas raffle tickets will be sold. Any Other Business The Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) would be available to attend a Committee meeting. Julie Best will liaise for attendance at the January Committee meeting.

FENLAND PHOTOGRAPHY Part 2 of our series

The Difference between Looking and Seeing by Rob Morris This time of year means short daylight hours and often grey cloudy skies. You often leave for school or work in the dark and return home again in the dark. Many people put the camera away except for maybe a few snaps. Even when I am busy I like to have a personal project on the go which I can dip in and out of as time allows. This can be in a lunch break or even a few minutes between appointments. There is no reason not to choose a couple of projects so you have a choice and they can go on for weeks, months or even years. So what subject do you choose? Well it can be anything from a colour such as photographing anything that is red like a front door, post-box or telephones box. It can be a part of where you live photographing the same scene everyday for a month from the same spot. The choice really is yours and everyone’s will be different. So what has this to do with the title of this article? Well we use our eyes everyday but we need to train them to see what is around us in a way that allows us to register the details more comprehensively than most people do. I have been running a course for adults with mental health issues and one of the exercises is to look at an image in a magazine and then turn it over. Then look back and see if you can see something you didn’t notice before. Keep doing this and it’s surprising how many more things you notice. You can do this as you walk around your neighbourhood each day or as you walk to work or school, take your camera with you and photograph these extra things you see. Very soon you will become much more observant and really appreciate more the things around you. Artists of all sorts produce work not only because of their skills but how they look at things and that transfers into their artwork and gives each their individuality. We are all individuals and have the capability of seeing things in our own way. Try some of the ideas I have mentioned and see what a difference it makes to your life not just your photography.

Rob Morris is a photographer based in Chatteris and can be contacted on 01354 695179 or via the website at photographybyrobmorris.com 22

BENWICK, A UNIQUE FEN VILLAGE This was an article that appeared in a publication entitled Cambridgeshire, Huntingdon and Peterborough Life in September 1980. Written by one C.V.Awdry, the article can be seen on the website lilyholtroad.co.uk, and we are pleased to be able to reproduce it in the Bugle. Here is Part 2, to be continued next issue. “There has been a church in Benwick for many years, though the location of the earliest seems uncertain. There was a St. James’s Chapel on the present site of Chapel Farm, recorded in 1518 as being in need of repair - it seems that this building did not long survive. According to the Victorian History of Cambridgeshire, an unconsecrated chapel was built in 1637-8; to judge from the evidence of parish accounts it was a thatched building. The present church, ‘built on the same site’, according to the Victoria History, had its foundation stone laid on 12th June 1850, though why the dedication was then changed to St. Mary the Virgin appears to be something of a mystery. Perhaps the idea was to link it more closely with the church at Doddington, which has the same dedication, but in any case Benwick’s chapel had always been under Doddington’s jurisdiction. Anyhow, the new St. Mary’s was built with stone from Hunstanton brought upriver and was restored, with a spire added to the tower, in 1902. The spire and the nave roof were covered with copper-coloured tiles which, topped with a gilded weathercock and combined with the dark brown stone of the walls must have made it an unusually if not uniquely-coloured church. Alas, in the late 1960s subsidence was judged to have made the tower unsafe and it was pulled down. Now gravestones seem to stagger drunkenly across the tiny churchyard, and the east and west ends of the nave are canted to north and south respectively. The church is well-tended as the spotless interior shows, but, standing on the sanctuary step I began to wonder whether my lunchtime lager had been excessive; looking west one experiences a remarkable sense

24

of unreality as the pews slope towards each other, forming, as it were, a channel along the nave, while the entire west wall leans well to the right. There is a substantial crack from window-frame to roof of the west wall of the vestry (the base of what was once the tower) and it is not altogether surprising that the building’s insurers have recently decreed that only the chancel may be used. The builder repairing the chancel-door steps has found that the footings, of brick, are now above ground level due to the shrinkage of the peat. Since the Deanery magazine spoke of the possibility that the church might be condemned as long ago as 1966 it is remarkable that it has survived this long!” Indeed, the church was finally demolished in 1985, five years after this article was written. The clock was removed to March Museum, where it remains to this day. The Friends of Benwick Church have worked tirelessly for many years raising funds and trying to secure a site on which to build a new church. Planning is currently underway to construct one next to the village hall. For more information contact the Friends, details on page 8 of this issue.

A New WI All kinds of opportunities for all kinds of women Would you like to add a new dimension to your life? Have fun? Make new friends? Learn new skills? If the answer is YES then come along to the Village Hall on Monday January 18th at 7.30pm to find out how becoming a member of the WI (Women’s Institute) could transform your life. Over State Pension Age? Make sure you are not missing out on benefit entitlement. From 2nd November 2009 the amount of capital that is disregarded for the purpose of establishing entitlement to Pension Credit is rising from £6,000 to £10,000. Some of you may have previously decided not to claim Pension Credit because you thought your savings were too high but as you see circumstances can change and you may now have entitlement to Pension Credit or other benefits. The Local Pension Service (LPS), part of the Government’s Department for Work and Pensions, can offer people over 60 years of age a full confidential benefit entitlement check in their own home. We think it is always worth someone checking to make sure they are not missing out on some or all of the following benefits: · Council Tax Benefit · Attendance Allowance · Pension Credit · Disability Living Allowance · Carers Allowance · Other related benefits If you would like to arrange a visit please give us a call on 01223 545374 26
