traditional Christmas starts with the perfect tree. Today, there’s an increasingly versatile range of ‘feel-real’ artificial trees available in many different shapes and styles, alongside beautifully scented real trees. So, if you’re looking for a classic conifer, a space-saving ‘slim shape’ tree, or a beautiful snowy spruce, we can find the ideal tree for you. Your artificial tree will last many years, and can be updated each year with exciting new decorations (see page 4). Handle your artificial tree gently when building and dismantling it, and store it securely in a dry place. Meanwhile, your real tree should be displayed in a waterholding stand, away from direct heat.

REAL TREES
TO SUIT YO U R H O M E

ur growers work hard all year round to produce the perfect real tree. Each tree is fertilised, weeded and pruned to achieve an attractive tree that is uniformly shaped and evenly branched. However, not everyone wants exactly the same shape: some want a narrow tree to fit into a small space, and some want a luxurious wide tree that fills the room. So, our growers skillfully prune the trees to suit different tastes, and they are labelled separately when harvested. Our narrower shaped trees are called ‘Slymshape’, and our medium-to-wide trees are labelled ‘Classic’. This allows you to pick the perfect tree for your home. Our grower, Charlie Hood, oversees all the pruning work, and has developed different techniques to create a narrower shape. “We prune all our trees in the early summer by pinching out some of the buds as they begin to grow,” he explains. “On the narrower trees, more pruning work is done lower down, and we sometimes use secateurs to accentuate the narrower shape at the bottom. Great care is taken to ensure that any pruning isn’t obvious when the tree is cut. The aim is for all of our trees to look perfectly natural.” We think you will agree that Charlie has done an excellent job on our trees this year.

Keep birds fuelled all winter S mall garden birds need to eat regularly, particularly during cold weather when they use up a lot of energy just keeping themselves warm. Putting out high-energy, nutritious bird foods containing fats and oils will help them maintain their energy levels, particularly through cold winter nights.
Surveys of garden birds show that small birds such as Coal Tits, Nuthatches and Robins make use of garden feeders most often in the autumn and winter. Providing for birds in autumn and winter: • Ensure that birds have access to fresh clean water every day; they will still bathe even in cold weather! Floating a small ball on the surface will help prevent the water freezing.
