WHAT TO PLANT NOW

DA RK & MYSTER IO US

For a plant that adds drama to borders, we recommend Sambucus ‘Strait-Laced’. Slimmer than most elderberries, it has sprays of pink flowers and black lacy leaves, and it reaches a height of 1.8-2m.

‘Star of Beauty’

RISING STARS KEEP TH EM HAN DY…

Lightweight snips are perfect for cutting flowers like iris and astrantia to display in a vase. You’ll find lots of hand tools in store. ‘Roma’

Making memories Gardening legend Peter Seabrook named Verbena ‘Margaret’s Memory’ in tribute to his late wife, and sales of this special plant will support the Alzheimer’s Society. Perfect for growing in a sunny container.

Astrantias have a quiet, understated beauty and attract bees aplenty, making them a must-have summer plant. Two of our favourite varieties are ‘Star of Beauty’, which has deep wine-red starshaped flowers, and the lovely rose-pink ‘Roma’ (AGM). Both can be grown in full sun or dappled shade, and will reach around 60-70cm tall.

‘Au Sommet’

G ROW TH E B E S T Look out for plants in this magazine, and in store, labelled AGM. These extraspecial plants have been given an Award of Garden Merit (AGM) by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) because they perform particularly well.

Monet loved irises and we can see why – the colour combinations are enchanting. We love these four gorgeous varieties, bred by French iris specialist, Cayeux, but we stock many other beauties, too. When planting your iris, choose a well-drained, sunny spot.

Sunshine yellow and fruity apricot never fail to cheer, and plants with summer flowers in these colours create harmonious contrasts. Yellow plants complement blues and purples, while soft apricot plants can be combined with flowers in virtually any colour, including hot pink, orange and even terracotta red. PE ACH , ORA N G E & CORA L

For a dazzling tropical colour scheme, choose shades of orange, coral and deepest peach. These colours are often seen on late-summer flowering plants like dahlia, helenium and canna, as well as pretty pot-fillers like calibrachoa and begonia. For contrast, add an indigo agapanthus (see next page) or a purple salvia (see page 20). 12

Pink flowering plants are incredibly versatile because they perfectly partner almost every other colour. Cooler shades of lilac-pink and shell-pink create a soft dreamy effect, while raspberry-pink and cerise ‘pop’ as part of a hot colour scheme. For added drama, colour-clash with shades of scarlet and orange. L I L AC, B LU E, P U RP LE

Cool colours are perfect for borders and pots located in dappled shade. Add a few white or pale-blue-flowered plants for contrast, or introduce shades of pink for a romantic cottage garden effect. As Summer arrives, bird feeding creates a hive of garden activity

O

nce garden birds have made it through the harsh winter, it’s easy to assume the other seasons are a breeze. Providing supplementary food during the spring and summer months can help garden birds, enabling them to get into breeding condition and providing them with a reliable source of food. The food in our hanging feeders and on our bird tables provides additional support for newly-fledged chicks, supporting them as they gain their independence.

Helpful tips… • Ensure birds have access to fresh, clean water. • Warm weather can aid the spread of bacteria, so regularly clean your bird feeders. • Put out small amounts of fresh bird food each day.

Why No Grow? Garden birds are welcome guests, but messy eaters. Spilled seeds can sprout, causing unwanted weeds. Our No Grow products contain ingredients that have been flaked and kibbled so they won’t germinate.
