I think sometimes we forget what a great season autumn is. The weather might be cooler but there’s still so much to do and enjoy. The garden is a great place to be and we’ve got some great seasonal ideas with beautiful autumn plants as well as planning tips for next spring. There’s also lots of events to enjoy; Halloween, Bonfire Night and of course Christmas. And as you would expect, we embrace each and every one with our usual passion and enthusiasm, starting with our official Christmas opening event on Wednesday 16th October. We’ve been working very hard behind the scenes to create something very special so we hope you’ll be able to join us so we can celebrate together.

Autumn Lawn Care After all the care and attention you’ve given to your lawn during the summer months you may think it’s time for a rest. But there’s a little more to be done to ensure you get the same lush green lawn next year.
• In September, remember to raise your mower blades and rake the lawn clear of excess fibre and moss. • A feed with an autumn lawn fertiliser should also be given. • The last mowing should take place in October and it should be no more than a light ‘tipping’ of the grass blades. • Repair any bumps and hollows and treat with an autumn lawn dressing.

TRY THIS AT HOME
Create a layered bulb plant pot Many bulbs are suitable for growing in containers, creating lovely displays perfect for patios, balconies and next to your door. The secret to a great display
is to layer the bulbs in the pot or container, choosing species which will flower a few weeks after one another to create a long-lasting display.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED Pot or container of your choice Bents Multi-purpose Compost, £6.99 for 60 litres, 3 for £12 Narcissus Tamara, £5.99 for 2kg

METHOD FIND EVERYTHING YOU NEED IN OUR PLANT AREA
CARE INSTRUCTIONS Water when needed according to growing conditions and weather. When the bulbs have finished flowering, feed with a liquid feed, ensuring the bulbs are good for next year. Do not disturb the pot until the leaves have died naturally, the bulbs can then be planted out in the garden for next year or left in the pot to flower again
1. When choosing a pot or container, take care to check that it is sufficiently wide and deep, at least 25cm (10’’) for two layers of bulbs and 35cm (14’’) for three layers. Line the bottom of the pot with crock or gravel, to assist with drainage. 2. Next, put a layer of compost in the bottom of the pot, we suggest using Bents Multi-purpose Compost (£6.99 for 60 litres). 3. The first layer of bulbs should be those that flower last. In the case of this example, tulips. If you are using a round pot or container, it is best to use an odd number of bulbs, as this will give a better display. 4. Completely cover this first layer of bulbs with more compost, then add your second layer of bulbs. This layer should flower after those in the top layer, daffodils (Narcissus) in this example. Cover completely with compost. 5. Now for the final layer, dwarf bulbs such as crocus. Cover this layer of bulbs with a good layer of compost and water in well. 6. To finish the pot off nicely try topping the pot with an inch thick layer of gravel or decorative stones to match your colour scheme.
