Advanced Principles & Practices of Graphic Design
Nova Southeastern University Winter 2024
Ben JennetteThis semester had a strong focus on branding in the graphic design world. This first project involed creating our own fictional brand that deals with some kind of cross-cultural product or service. I chose to design a clothing brand called Horizon. The core message is about promoting a coastal lifestyle through comfortable and stylish clothing across the globe.
I created several logo variations and included some placeholder mockups for the platforms I planned to create, which was a billboard, a postcard, and a magazine cover.
For the first platform for my fictional brand Horizon, I designed a billboard. The idea behind the design was to advertise a beachy culture that can be appreciated around the world. I used photoshop and a variety of effects to create
I also created a mockup as someone might see it driving down the road. Since billboards need to be seen and understood from hundreds of feet away, I made sure that the design and typography were big and not overly crowded in regard to composition.
For the second platform for my fictional clothing brand Horizon, I designed a magazine cover. I wanted the color palette and overall look to be fairly different from the billboard design. So instead of bright and beachy colors, I used a tame mix of browns and greens. I once again advertised a style of clothing that would be worn across several different cultures throughout the world.
For the third platform, I designed a vintage postcard for my brand Horizon. I took inspiration from old postcards I’ve seen before and gave mine a worn and faded look. I added some paper folds for texture, and put a photo and font that I thought represented the aesthetic of both my brand and the platform I wanted to portray.
This is a moodboard for a new brand I created, called Prism Studios. It is a fictional movie production studio company. The platforms I chose to create were a movie poster, a t-shirt, and a flyer for a drive-in movie theater. I also chose to associate each platform with a certain decade of film style. I chose 1980s, 1970s, and 1950s.
This is the movie poster I made for 1980s movie Back to the Future. I wanted to keep the neon style to match the decade and the aesthetic of the film. I think this turned out really well for the vision I had in mind.
This is a T-shirt design I made for 1970s movie Jaws. I got creative with the style of things but also kept a consistent look of a vintage style shirt for an old movie.
For the final platform for my movie studio brand designs, I created a flyer for a drive-in theater, set in the 1950s. I used imagery and styles associated with that decade, and specifically going to outdoor drive-in theaters.
This is a mini-portfolio page for the past 3 designs. I put them together onto one page to show the entire process of creating platforms for the fictional movie studio brand. I wanted everything to be in one place and to have a look of colorful, exciting, multi-decade film appreciation.
For the third and final fictional brand, I transitioned from old media to new media, and created a hypothetical form of futuristic technology called Holoframe. The idea is that it is a flat, resizable device that sits on top of a flat piece of media such as a photo or painting or book, and it projects a holographic display above the item as a decoration piece that looks very neon and futuristic.
For the first platform (of three) for this assignment, I created a product design and logo for my brand Holoframe. I demonstrated how the product would work and what it would look like. I also created two variations of the logo.
For the second platform, I showed the product being used on top of vinyl record cover. I think a lot of people like album covers and would want to showcase them as a decoration via this product. I put a record player on the same table for context, but the focus is on the projection.
For the third platform, I showed the product being used on top of an image of my dog. This design shows exactly what the holographic projection would look like in the context of a kitchen, which is one of the possible places someone might use this product if it existed.
