HEALTH & WELLBEING

New Year, New You Many of us have started the new year with best intentions to improve our outlook and to make radical changes to find happiness and inner peace. However, this can only be found if you’re ready and in a state of acceptance. Since Covid, we have all been confined to our own homes to remain safe, but unfortunately the safety of our physical health has come with a price to our mental health. Being in the same surroundings and sometimes being alone for months has caused us to become our own enemy mentally. Whereas under normal circumstances, we may wake up for work feeling a little low but, once at work, we are able to interact with colleagues who can help; this way a problem is aired and shared and you’re able to move on knowing that you have verbalised your concerns. When you have been on your own during lockdown, or still working from home and having no human face to face interaction, the thoughts which have been supressed for many years start to arouse themselves and pop up when we least expect them to. We try to deal with them internally, hoping that tomorrow is another day and the feelings will have returned to their suppressed state.

However, this is not the case and as the days and weeks pass, the anxiety of these concerns increase to a point where from the moment you arise to the time you try to sleep the thoughts are constantly spinning in your mind. Also, because you’re already in a negative state, the concerns are not being dealt within a positive mindset, so this in turn exacerbates the issues even further. All rational thoughts are non-existent because you’re not able to focus on anything but your worries, which remain in a negative state. So what is the answer? To move on from this state, I would firstly recommend you be honest with yourself and accept that you need support. This can be found by speaking with a professional, whether that be a counsellor, therapist or somebody who is able to listen to your concerns in a professional capacity. I don’t always recommend confiding in a friend, because as a friend they may tell you what they think you want to hear and this is not dealing with the issue, but merely placating you. As a Life Therapist, I listen to my client’s concerns, and discuss your past history as far back as childhood or your earliest memory, because how we feel in the here and now is always an association of a past experience we’ve faced. The traits we carry from our parents can also

have a major impact on how we conduct ourselves as adults. I would strongly urge anybody who feels that they are not in a positive mindset for a large part of their day to seek help.
