Two local organisations within the Earlsfield community have come together to provide inspiration and confidence to young people with special educational needs.
Security provider, Banham Security, joined forces with local special school, Garratt Park, through the Participation Lead in Wandsworth Children’s Services, when it was identified that their young people required more hands-on work experience opportunities within the local community.
The Council meets local businesses at Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce networking events – a brilliant way to build new partnerships. To start with, a tour of Banham Security’s 50,000 sq ft headquarters in Earlsfield was arranged for key stage five (KS5) learners to delve into the world of security. They were taken through Banham’s expansive warehouse, its highly secure Alarm Receiving Centre where London homes are being monitored 24/7, and the Banham Academy which provides skills and training for young people. This was a fantastic opportunity for the young people to see inside a big, busy working environment and gain insight into the many different jobs that exist within their local community and beyond. Banham’s Managing Drector, Martin Herbert, offered the KS5 learners work experience that took place across all areas of the business within the warehouse, control room and academy. Banham organised hands-on activities and learning so that young people could gain insight into the world of security, its many systems and wide range of professionals. Kevin Patterson, KS5 lead at Garratt Park, said: “This was a truly unique experience for our students, one that they fully appreciated and gained invaluable experience and memories from. To be so warmly welcomed into such a prestigious company, to be treated like valued employees and at the same time like important clients was something they will never forget. It certainly inspired them to work towards gaining the qualifications, skills, experience and knowledge required to work in a fulfilling and fascinating environment.” Martin Herbert, Managing Director of Banham Security, said: “For almost 100 years, Banham’s ethos has been centred around ensuring a secure future for the next generation, which is why we strive to provide opportunities to young people within our business and throughout our industry through the Banham Academy. We believe that all young people should have the chance to experience new opportunities. We were delighted that KS5 learners from Garratt Park School attended a tour at our headquarters and took part in work experience across various departments at Banham. We’re so proud of all of the talented young people from the school and we hope that their time spent at Banham’s offices has inspired them to think about embarking on careers within the security industry.”
