Wandsworth wins gold and silver in the London Design Awards

Totterdown Street in Tooting Broadway and Waterman’s Green in Putney have been awarded gold and silver awards respectively in two categories at the London Design Awards 2024.

The London Design Awards is an international competition that recognises exceptional designs and outstanding creative projects worldwide. This year there were over 2,500 submissions from more than 30 countries.

Taking gold was the newly pedestrianised Totterdown Street. Formerly a functional space with parking and delivery points, Wandsworth Council has worked to transform the street into a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly community hub that reflects the area’s dynamic multicultural energy and provides benefits to local businesses. The project vision was to create a central public space where people could gather, socialise and enjoy new green infrastructure and active travel options. A key aspect of the project was the collaboration with Tooting Market, helping to extend its lively atmosphere onto the street and encouraging shared use of the space.

Awarded silver was Waterman's Green in Putney, formerly a dark and underused patch of land next to Putney Bridge, but now transformed into a welcoming public space, with a clear focus on accessibility, inclusivity and sustainability. The redesign introduced an accessible ramp, widened the entrance, and created open, sweeping views of the Thames. Central to the transformation was the creation of a rich, natural environment with the introduction of native trees and greenery. This created habitats and helped improve the air quality by screening visitors from the busy Lower Richmond Road.
