Rotary Browns Bay: North Shore Jumbo Tennis

North Shore Jumbo Tennis tournament run by Rotary Browns Bay

Rotary Browns Bay’s first foray into Jumbo tennis was an unqualified success according to all the varied competitors. The winning double was Jose Gonzalez from Spain and partnering Kevin Schaad from Switzerland. These two lads represented the Unique language school and in their four man team they also included Bruno Schwember from Chile and Tobias Stucki from Liechtenstein. However the overall four person team winner was the Hibiscus Hockey group from Orewa Taxation Services. The language school lads won the final against the hockey fellas 11-10 and as suggested it was close all the way in the seven minute final. Some $6,000 was raised for Ronald McDonald House and the Auckland City Mission. Well done Rotary Browns Bay!

Bays Martial Art Academy: News

Thank you Browns Bay! Last week Bays Martial Art Academy had a parent drop in who had recently moved to Browns Bay. Her first comment was “Wow I can’t believe how much choice and variety you offer to the Browns Bay Community." Thinking about this and counting up the 40 classes a week available, the team felt super proud, but also privileged to now be able to offer a brand new choice for the Community – 3 Yoga classes a week for adults! Many of you in the community know the super talented Vinyasa Flow Yoga Instructor - Nicola Simpson who until recently taught at Beachside Gym. With a strong following wherever she teaches, Nicola makes the newest Yogi’s comfortable and for the more experienced she also offers plenty of advanced techniques. With so many in the community now trying these new Yoga classes we think Nicola has got the perfect balance offering the key benefits of – Relaxation, Muscle Toning and Improving your balance. Like all things good there are so many different types of Yoga styles. Vinyasa is a flowing style of yoga that links the breath with movement. The focus is on the inhale and the exhale as you move from one pose to the next. So who is doing Yoga? This is a mixture of Mums & Dads who need a bit of ‘me time’ as well as active retirees who want to maintain a healthy lifestyle. So what are the benefits? Vinyasa yoga serves as a strengthtraining process and helps build lean muscle mass throughout the body. The different poses, especially the standing, arm balances, backbends and inversions utilise body resistance while placing stress on muscles and fatiguing them. The continual flowing movements help stretch and elongate your muscles while they are being strengthened, allowing greater mobility and range of motion. And of course Yoga works on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels to connect the mind with the body and relieve stress and anxiety. Mindfully moving through the continual flowing poses during a vinyasa class can help alleviate the static thoughts that may be running through your head. Focusing on the inhale and exhale of your breath results in a positive, calming effect on your central nervous system. “We believe Yoga is the perfect complement to our other fitness programs we offer the community and it is great to see not only new faces but lots of familiar faces from Beachside continuing to enjoy Yoga in Browns Bay” Says Caroline Hazelden, School Owner.
