Como St Café is a relative new kid on the block in terms of the Takapuna café scene, but this funky and friendly café is quickly establishing itself as a go-to for great food, coffee, and service. A great business philosophy is filtered down through the staff from owner James Sax. “I’m up at 5am every day and I love getting out of bed and coming to work because it’s not really a job to me, getting to do what I love. It’s not about the money, it’s more about the satisfaction I get and seeing other people enjoying themselves.” Como St is James’s second café. He believes that hospitality is in his blood, as his parents own a Bed & Breakfast in Mt Eden and a hunting lodge in Rotorua. James manages to balance his café commitments with his career in property development. “I went back into property after I had owned and run my first café, but I really missed being around people because you get to see a few hundred people a day in a café, and I love people. The café culture has everything that a pub has, without the alcohol and the messy bits, and I love that. I think it’s a pretty powerful place, you can have some really cool conversations with people and meet people that you wouldn’t cross paths with in your usual life.” James’s bubbly personality has resulted in a welcoming café that draws you in and makes you want to spend time there. Their Allpress coffee is served to perfection and their food cabinet makes you hungry just looking at it. James’s personal favourite are the salads. Five to six salads are produced daily and customers are able to mix and match them as they wish. The sirloin steak sandwich and the chicken focaccia melt are also big hits. With summer just around the corner, the café released a new menu in September which includes delicious meals such as Kedgeree – this traditional brunch dish is a beautiful blend of smoked fish and mild curried rice garnished with a hard-boiled egg. The strong relationship that Como St Café has with its customers is evident from the moment you walk in the door.
