Loving what we do! Welcome to our latest issue of Benefitz News. You will gather as you read through these pages we absolutely love what we do. Despite the business having been around for more than three decades we thrive on the challenges that the ever-changing communications environment provides.

30th Birthday Party!

Fabric new big business!

Turning modems into works of art!

Channel Mag 10 years & 100 issues on!

As a business Benefitz continues to experience great success. There are three drivers to this success:- our ongoing investment in people – we have a team of more than 80; our ongoing focus on technology and innovation; and, our ongoing investment in the brand. Benefitz News is our opportunity to highlight the unique offering that we have and how we add considerable value to a wide range of businesses and organisations that rely on good communication. What we do is provide a whole range of solutions that help with that communication process. In this issue we chat with members of our team. We highlight recent investments we have made in high tech machinery. We also profile recent projects that demonstrate the width of our capability. Very importantly we also celebrate the part we play in our community. We love it! Enjoy!

You’ll love reading about the stuff my Dad and his Benefitz team do!

Our resident French Bulldog ‘Maisie’ plays a starring role in this issue.

Benefitz celebrates 30 years! The Benefitz team loves a party! We celebrated our 30th birthday with a big bash at Milford Cruising Club, with a big crowd turning out to celebrate the achievement of the business. A band playing 80s hits (the company started out in 1988) entertained the crowd of around 250, who enjoyed great food and refreshments at the seaside venue. Our roving Channel Magazine camera was there on the night to capture the people...

You have probably heard of the WordPress CMS already, as it is used by many web developers around the world, but it is important to know that not all sites are created equally. In the wrong hands, WordPress can be slow, bloated and not very secure. Our approach at Benefitz is to work within a clearly defined set of features in WordPress to ensure we only deliver sites that are fast, secure and extra quick to build and deploy. The approved tools we use power our unique design and build processes that mean your site is actually written as we work on the design and functionality with you, for an ultra-quick turnaround for your next product, blog or marketing website.

The Others

Most of our websites are built using either B-Web or WordPress, but we don’t stop there. If you have an existing CMS or prefer a different solution, our development team can work with just about anything – Wix, SquareSpace, Joomla, Drupal... You name it, we’ll do it.

Yearbooks made easy!

The 'Future Thinking' philosophy is very evident with the Benefitz innovative online system that helps school and other entities produce yearbooks very easily. Benefitz Fusion Yearbook System allows schools to create their own yearbooks online and then have them printed and bound in high quality by Benefitz. More than 50 New Zealand schools now use this system for their Yearbook. So how does the Fusion Yearbook System work? • The system completely removes the need for schools to invest in expensive graphics software to produce the finished artwork for the Yearbook. The artwork is totally produced online using the Fusion Web-based Platform that has been cleverly developed and continues to be refined.

Caitlin Ew

• The school can assign its Yearbook Coordinator as the 'Administrator' of the system with simple password access. Then access can be provided to others who can make contributions to specific aspects of each Yearbook. For example, each student can personally upload their own information to the Yearbook.

What costs are involved in using the Fusion Yearbook System? • The costs of using the Fusion Yearbook System are no more than producing the Yearbook by contracting somebody to design and produce the artwork for the book and then contracting a printer to print it. • Benefitz is providing each school with the opportunity to use the Fusion Web-based Platform to design and compile the content for the Yearbook and will then print the Yearbook from a pdf file generated by the system once it is completed. • It is very easy for the school. They receive one invoice for the total production of the book, inclusive of the use of the Fusion Web-based Platform. • This cost includes any technical support needed for the school when using the online system.

• Like traditional graphics software the Fusion Yearbook System allows users to be creative with the book. The difference is that it is much easier to learn and operate. Photos and K A R Avery M E A Aeasily. REA SCHOOL images can be uploaded and positioned Y E A R B O O K • If the school starts early in the year, the Yearbook content can be compiled during the year, eliminating most of the 'rush' usually involved in getting it produced towards the end of the year.

Now a must for online marketing If you’re not creating videos for your website yet, you’re in the minority. A recent report featuring insights from more than 600 marketers revealed companies are embracing video content, and the majority of brands are producing videos – not just because they’re popular, but because they’re highly effective. Three-quarters of respondents create videos for their target audiences. This makes video one of the most important content marketing formats. “We have had a video on our own website for the past 10 years and it has proven to be a real selling point,” says Benefitz Managing Director Aidan Bennett. “The making of these videos is quite often viewed as being expensive, but this is no longer the case. Our customers now have access to having Video on their websites at a fraction of the cost.”

Book Printing Right here!

With the installation of four key pieces of technology, Benefitz is making it realistic and affordable for publishers and writers to print their books right here in New Zealand. These machines are the JetSX B2 Inkjet Printing Press, Iridesse Production Press, Horizon PUR Perfect Binder and Horizon Hard Case Book Binder. Benefitz JetSX B2 Inkjet and Iridesse Printing Presses are the perfect printing machines to print short to medium run books. These are digital printing presses so printing plates are not required. The JetSX has a sheet size of 740mm x 530mm (B2) the biggest of any flat sheet digital press in Australasia. The inkjet ink is durable and very similar to offset printing inks. The Press can print black and white and full colour in duplex (two sides of a sheet at once). A big advantage is books can be printed stacked, meaning no extra costs for collating are incurred. Benefitz Horizon BQ-470 PUR Perfect Binder enables the Benefitz team to take the printed sheets from the Benefitz JetSX B2 Inkjet Press and produce finished square spine (PUR bound) books of virtually any shape or size. The BQ-470 is a fully automated perfect binder, producing up to 1,350 superior-quality perfect bound books per hour. For those who wish to have their books with the hard cover finish, we are able to do this on our Benefitz Horizon HCB2 Hard Case Binder. The HCB-2 is the ideal solution for producing ‘On Demand’ case bound books. The binding system is designed with an ergonomic concept to increase productivity and efficiency.

This is the perfect solution for short to medium run books to be printed locally. Benefitz can also help with getting books printed offshore, should that be the more costeffective solution.

THE FACTS • Total solution for small or larger print-runs. • It is now economical to print just 50 or 100 books. • All done in-house at Benefitz – Print PUR or Hard Case Bind. • Great service for self-publishers. • Book publishing expertise. • We can help getting books printed off-shore as well.

Established 1988

Crystal Sharp

Graphic Designer Crystal Sharp is one of Benefitz' many clever graphic designers. In fact her email signature mischievously says she’s Benefitz Sharpest Graphic Designer. While Crystal has all round skills in the design space – having a Bachelor of Design – her main project for the company is Channel Magazine, the monthly community magazine that Benefitz publishes for the North Shore. Benefitz is now a bit of a family affair for Crystal - her brother Jonathan is a valued member of the Benefitz signage install team, joining in early 2017. It is fair to say that the Sharps' love working at Benefitz!

I also do a lot of walking. On weekdays I usually walk about 8-10kms per day. It’s a great chance to keep fit, get some fresh air and have some time out.

How long have you been at Benefitz? Crystal: I started working here in July 2013, so it’s been just over six years since I started. It doesn’t feel like it’s been that long though!

What do you like about the company? Crystal: Everyone here at Benefitz is so friendly, it’s a really great place to work! I also like the fact that Benefitz is so supportive of the community.

How did you come to join Benefitz? Crystal: I was seeking employment in the design industry and approached a couple of companies that I felt would be suitable based on the Bachelor of Design I have. I liked the look of Benefitz and thought it would be a great place for me to work, so I approached the company with my portfolio and CV one day. About one or two weeks later I heard back from Benefitz about a job interview, went for the interview, and got the job!

What are your favourite solutions that Benefitz provides? Crystal: Benefitz is great at providing a complete solution for clients. Advertising, design, web, printing, publishing, exhibition stands and signage can all be produced on-site. There’s not many companies that can offer such a solution for personal or businesses needs.

Tell us a bit about your involvement in Channel Magazine? Crystal: I’m the designer for Channel magazine, so I set up every issue, cover to back. I create the layouts for all the articles and features that go into the magazine and design the cover. Many of the adverts that are included within are created or edited by me as well. I work together with the wonderful team who write and organise the content that goes into each monthly issue. What are your interests outside of work? Crystal: I love illustration and sculpting. Most of my spare time is spent creating artwork and illustrations or working on my sculptures. I’ve sculpted dogs, unicorns, horses and am currently working on a pair of dragons. I’ve had people from Australia and America commission custom-made sculptures from me in the past! It’s a long process each time, but very rewarding to see each sculpture finished.

What’s the best place you’ve ever visited in the world and why? Crystal: I haven’t actually ever set foot out of New Zealand before! I have anaphylactic food allergies which mean that flying for an extended period of time in an enclosed space could be a serious problem for me. I do, however, make it a habit to take multiple trips to Rotorua each year. It’s my home away from home! Every time I visit there’s always something new to visit or experience. Visiting the mineral pools is always a must-do whenever I am there for a break. Any advice for budding designers? Crystal: If you have a passion for design, I highly recommend familiarising yourself with Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, as they’re the main programs that a designer uses. Practice using them whenever you have a chance. It helps to look at online tutorials as well. Going to university I learned many tips and tricks, however they don’t teach you everything about these programs and there were few things I picked up by myself or from online tutorials.

It was an honour to host Mr Akihiro Fujii at Benefitz. Mr Akihiro is the Deputy Division Head of Screen Graphic & Precision Solutions Co., the high tech company of Japan which has supplied our Screen TruePress JetSX B2 Inkjet Printer. He is pictured in front of the machine with Benefitz Managing Director Aidan Bennett.

B2 Inkjet Power!

Unique technology sets Benefitz apart Benefitz was the first company in New Zealand to invest in B2 Inkjet Digital Printing, with the installation of the Screen Truepress JetSX. Since its installation the machine has proven to be a workhorse, opening fresh new opportunities.

“We are known as leaders in technology and this is a prime example,” says Benefitz Managing Director Aidan Bennett. “Since we took delivery of this $2 million dollar machine, the advantages of the press have paid real dividends for us. Being able to print volume B2 digitally and on stocks up to .6mm in thickness are real advantages of this press for our business.” In recent years Benefitz has moved into being one of New Zealand’s largest manufacturers of photo books.

These are being produced on the Benefitz B2 JetSX Inkjet machine and Aidan explains that the inkjet press is a key ingredient of this new business. “It is a real advantage having a sheet size of B2 (740mm x 530mm) as we are able to lay items such as these books up several times for economies of scale. The machine prints photos very sharply so provides a great solution all round.” Aidan says the machine complements the fact that

Benefitz is one of New Zealand’s leading exponents of Personalised Printing – or printing unique items from databases. “We have invested heavily in this area of our business. Our powerful solution is achieved by pairing the magical XMPIE software with our printing technology. XMPIE is a product of FujiXerox. “The neat thing is the Benefitz B2 JetSX Inkjet machine has also offered fresh challenges and retraining for members of our offset printing team. It is operated on a rotational basis by our printers who also work on our Komori and Heidelberg offset machinery. It is no secret that this is technology of the future and through our investment, our team are being exposed to this very early.”

THE FACTS Benefitz B2 JetSX Inkjet Press • Four Colour Inkjet Digital Press. • Only B2 Digital Flatsheet Volume Press in NZ. • Prints Digital Sheet Size on 740mm x 530mm. • Prints stocks up to .6mm thick, great for packaging etc. • Inkjet ink as durable as Offset inks. • Prints one side (simplex), or two sides (duplex). • Prints on standard offset papers - uncoated or coated/gloss.

FujiXerox New Zealand Managing Director Peter Thomas (left) and Aidan Bennett of Benefitz with the new Xerox Iridesse Digital Printing Press installed recently at Benefitz.

Two new digital presses at Benefitz Benefitz digital goes 6-colour! Benefitz has made an investment in two new latest technology digital printing machines recently with the installation of a Xerox 6-Colour Iridesse Press and a new Xerox IGen5 Press. Benefitz was one of the first in New Zealand to install the Iridesse Press – a brand new piece of cutting-edge printing technology from Xerox. The Iridesse offers the opportunity to print up to six colours digitally and real advancements in quality. The company was also one of the first in the country to install the first generation Xerox IGen Press some years ago. The installation of the newest IGen, the IGen5 Press, provides advancements in technology on this sector-leading press that offers the ability to print a sheet size of up to 660m x 364mm

– perfect for 6-page A4 gatefold or presentation folder jobs. Being an early adopter of new Xerox technology is not new for Benefitz. The company has been a customer of the global technology giant for well over two decades and has been one of the first to the market with their new printing technology consistently during that period. “We are proud to be a Premier Partner of Xerox,” says Benefitz Managing Director Aidan Bennett. “The relationship allows us to be at the forefront of technology, ensuring we are providing high quality and innovative solutions to our customers.” The Xerox Iridesse Press offers massive advantages in quality and capability over the technology it has replaced. It

is a six colour print engine – four process colours plus specialty dry ink with offset-like metallic colours, as well as white and clear inks. “The introduction of the Iridesse Press has seen massive advancements in overall print quality and we are able to offer our customers many new digital print options,” says Aidan Bennett. “The ability to print white is huge, as well as the added ‘special’ metallic colours in addition to clear, and being able to print on up to 400gsm thick card. Our digital team are fizzing about the possibilities. “The new IGen5 Press gives us advancements in production capability as well as the flexibility of the matt finish ink. We have always loved the IGen platform due to the extra size capability. It is great that the print quality continues to advance with every new generation press and this is our fourth or fifth IGen." FujiXerox New Zealand’s Managing Director Peter Thomas visited Benefitz shortly after the new machines had been installed. “Fuji Xerox is incredibly proud to have had a business partnership with Benefitz for well over 20 years," said Peter Thomas. "We are also very excited to be delivering our new Iridesse Digital Press to Benefitz. We both believe that this new technology platform will allow Benefitz to enhance their position as one of New Zealand’s premier businesses in their field.” These two new presses have been added to the Benefitz range of digital solutions that also includes the B2 JetSX Inkjet Press as featured on previous pages.

We’ve Got It Covered

If you want one copy we’ll do it. If you want 500,000 copies we’ll do it! All under one roof on Constellation Drive

It’s the number one digital machine in the market. Featuring the large 660mm x 364mm sheet size. We call it our Digital Beast. The iGen5 gobbles up graphics files and spits them out economically in lots of 50, 100, 200, 500 or more, in sharp printed living colour. No other Small Format Digital Printing machine offers the sheet size of iGen150. This large 364mm x 660mm size opens up a whole range of options. You can gang more up for economy and you can print bigger images. It enables us to print diecut presentation folders and more.

The combination of this new press with the iGen5 press means that Benefitz has the most powerful small format digital offering in the local market. The Xerox Iridesse Press contains the latest technological advances, with a six colour print engine, specialty dry ink, metallic colours – Gold and Silver. The Iridesse also prints White dry ink and Clear dry ink and on stocks up to 400GSM.

LARGE 660 X 364MM SHEET SIZE POPULAR The Benefitz iGEN5 ‘Beast’ provides a big advantage over others in the market due to the larger sheet size. Virtually all others can only print to A3 or SRA3 in size. The Benefitz iGEN5 is able to print to a sheet size of 364mm x 660mm. “This is a real point of difference for us,” explains Benefitz Director Dallas Bennett. “There are numerous advantages in being able to print to this size on a commercial small format digital press. We are able to gang up more items for economy and the size means we can also print items such as 6 page gatefold brochures as well as Presentation Folders – with pockets and business card slits – very economically.”

The machine – the JetSX – is the first machine of its type installed in NZ or Australia, and only the second in the world. It is capable of printing high volumes and a sheet-size that is much bigger, B2 – is 740mm x 530mm. Prints personalised (or variable) sheets up to this size, also resulting in economies of scale for smaller personalised items due to the fact that more can be printed at once on a sheet. Prints on standard offset papers – uncoated or coated/gloss – as well as much thicker stocks (up to 0.6mm). So it opens up opportunities in the packaging market and personalised packaging.

5 Metres Wide! NZ’s biggest & best grand format printer

Benefitz Uvistar Pro8 eight-colour five-metre-wide grand format printing machine is simply the best machine of its type in New Zealand. There are very few five metres wide printing machines in New Zealand – and no others get near the print quality of this eight colour machine.

“The versatility of the machine has proven to be everything that we thought it would,” says Benefitz Director Dallas Bennett. “It can print billboard skins and banners very quickly in the four colour mode, then in minutes it can be switched to the eight colour option and be capable of printing high quality items suitable for instore point of sale. “The machine was a significant investment for us but it is a beast. It can print on a whole range of substrates

– pvc banner vinyl, pvc mesh, fabrics, synthetic paper, paper and more. Most others in the market settle for three metre machines, but we decided that the ability to print massive images in one piece was important, so the five-metre capability was essential and is a real advantage.” A big advancement of this Uvistar Pro8 over previous models and other options on the market is its automated double-side print option. This enables

LED Leading the Way!

Green technology with speed & quality

A major technology investment was made by Benefitz with the installation of the VUTEk EFI LED GS3250LX Flatbed Printer. This machine was the first of its kind in the New Zealand market, with its innovative LED ‘cool cure’ ink-curing system. The technology was chosen for some real advantages.

Josh Simpson (left) and operator Mike Webb and the Benefitz Vutek LED Flatbed printer.

Firstly, the VUTEk EFI is consistent with Benefitz' commitment to green technology as it contains no VOCs, uses less consumables, produces less waste, uses less energy and has the ability to print on recycled and other materials with ease. Secondly, the lower curing temperatures enable Benefitz to print heat sensitive and thin materials without buckling or head strikes, adding significantly to its portfolio of applications. Additionally, the environmental benefits mean that less energy is required, with the extra benefit of the lamps having a longer life span.

“The LED curing lamps don’t need to warm up before we use the printer, speeding up set-up times,” says Benefitz Director Dallas Bennett. “The machine increased our capacity with a leap forward in speed – being two times' faster – and quality, over the machinery it replaced.” The VUTEk’s LED ink curing technology also delivers high quality and high adhesion in order to maximise the visual allure of promotional materials, including signage, retail POS, exhibition, display, billboards and fleet graphics. “This is new technology to future proof our business in this flatbed space,” adds Dallas Bennett. “We have been thrilled with our choice and we are once again leading the way by being the first to adopt the LED ‘cool cure’ technology in the New Zealand market.” At 3.2 metres in print width capability, the machine also provides the perfect back-up for the Benefitz UviStar Pro8 5-metres-wide billboard machine. Both machines also offer the flexibility of printing roll-to-roll or as flatbed machines.

THE FACTS VUTEk EFI LED GS3250LX Flatbed Printer • 1000 dpi resolution. • Prints up to 3.2 metres wide. • Innovative LED ink curing system. • More durable and stable ink process. • Better adhesion to substrates. • Prints cmyk & white. • Faster than previous technology. • Flatbed and Roll-to-Roll Printer.

Developed in Japan, Benefitz' new ValueJet 1938TX incorporates technology proven to be faster, more reliable, more cost effective and more efficient to provide vibrantly printed fabrics. Using Mutoh’s new waterbased textile pigmented inks, the VJ-1938TX enables direct printing on cotton fabrics, rayon or mixed fibre fabrics. The printer can also jet Mutoh’s genuine DS2series universal sublimation inks for direct printing onto polyester fabrics. The new Mutoh is designed for several non-stretch or limited stretch fabric applications such as POP signage, trade show graphics, fine art prints, banners, flags and fashion items. “Most others in the market who can genuinely print using the dye sublimation method on to fabrics are restricted up to the 1.6 metre size,” says Benefitz Director Dallas Bennett. “We now have two options and can print to more than 2.6 metres wide so the potential for big fabric projects is endless. With the flexibility of the two machines, we are excited by the possibilities, as we know our customers are. Flags are clearly a big market but

Benefitz HP360. Latex large format printer.

High quality large images!

New technology makes a difference Benefitz recently made an investment to update virtually all of the companies large format printing machinery. These machines print high quality and up to 1.6 metres wide. As well as massive printing machines that print up to five metres wide, our Benefitz XL printing department has a range of versatile large format printing machines that print at high resolution on a range of substrates. We are constantly investing in this area of our business in new machinery. We have recently added an additional HP Latex printing machine to our range of large format machines that print high quality and up to 1.6 metres wide. The new machine

is the HP570 Latex Printer. The first latex printer to be installed was the HP360. These machines use water-based odourless inks offering a range of advantages. The 6-colour machines print on a range of substrates with a big plus being that every print comes off completely dry and ready to finish and deliver, or can be laminated immediately. Some ink processes require what is called ‘degassing’ in the industry – latex does not. A big advantage is that these inks are also very eco-friendly.

Turning modems into works of art! The Benefitz ability to print on just about anything has played a part in realising technology business Orcon’s hopes to ‘banish the boring modem’. Benefitz has recently printed hundreds of the modems featuring artworks from five New Zealand artists. These have turned the modems into works of art. “When we initially sat down and discussed how Orcon could liven up their modems, we talked about using photographs,” explains Benefitz Director Mike Nolan. “This gave them the idea that we could print high quality durable images directly onto the modem so members of their team came up with the very clever idea of actually making them works of art by engaging the artists.” These artists are Otis Frizzell, Flox (Hayley King), Anna Leyland, Askew One and Andrew J. Steel. They have all crafted unique modem designs for the Orcon Designer Series. Each modem artwork is a limited edition. The Orcon Designer Series is also helping to solve a real problem for home broadband users. “Every week our customers call us with a common problem – they’re experiencing internet connectivity issues due to where they have placed their modem,” says Taryn Hamilton, General Manager of Orcon. “Modems are often thrown in the cupboard, tucked under the couch or hidden somewhere far out of sight, when actually they should be in a prominent spot for best coverage throughout the house,

and where provides the strongest signal for devices like smart TVs that need the most bandwidth. “We wanted to shake up the look of these seemingly boring units and what better way than collaborating with a bunch of super-talented Kiwis creatives. We’re stoked with the results – the modems all look amazing, have come out different, and we reckon there’s a modem to appeal to everyone.” Otis Frizzell’s ‘Cable Manaia’ channels authentic Aotearoa designs; Flox’s design includes the infusion of bright colours and native birds; Anna Leyland’s is titled ‘Perception’; Askew and Andrew J. Steel’s artworks give a solid nod to their street art roots. As the final piece of the modem puzzle, the artists have prepared their original designs on a large scale medium of their choice, to be auctioned for charity. All proceeds will go to Forest & Bird. The Orcon Designer Series was printed on the Benefitz A2 Mimaki flatbed UV printer. It is a promotional printer that can print on a whole range of items.

A part of the business that has played a big part in this ongoing growth is the signage division. We are now New Zealand’s most comprehensive signage provider when our sign resource is paired with our market-leading ability to print big images. Benefitz continues to develop a powerful signage resource with its dedicated facility at 18 Parkway Drive – just a few doors up the road from the main office on the corner of Parkway Drive and Constellation Drive. Twelve of the Benefitz' 80+ team

work from the signage division premises. Benefitz' grand format printing facility – and a further 12 staff – are located in the rear unit of the same building – meaning some of the country’s most powerful large and grand format printing solutions are right at

their finger tips. “At Benefitz we quite clearly have the best print manufacturing capability in New Zealand for display and signage with our grand format machinery,” says Benefitz Managing Director Aidan Bennett. “Now, with the resources we have assembled in our signage division, we have a total signage package that is second-to-none.” A CNC Router and larger Rolls Roller application table have also been added to the wide range of resources that the sign team have available. They also have a boom lift truck to complete higher installations. Benefitz Tekcel Enduro Router is a powerful CNC Router designed for quality and accuracy. We looked at second-hand options but decided that a brand new vehicle was the most desirable due to safety and technology considerations. And of course it had to be black.” Since the truck was introduced it has helped with the installation of a huge number of projects undertaken for customers by Benefitz. Lee Darby Senior Designer

Lee Darby seems like part of the furniture at Benefitz. He’s been part of the team for a dozen or more years, and loves the family feel of the place. Lee leads the creative juice department at Benefitz and can often be seen with a sharp pencil and a blank piece of paper, setting out on his next creative journey. You should follow him on social media as well – he’s very social and a lot of fun! How long have you been at Benefitz? When you get to my age it’s hard to remember things like that! It’s about 11 years, probably closer to 12. How did you come to join Benefitz? I was working for a Boutique Agency in the city and Benefitz did some print work for them. When they closed down I approached Mike Nolan and they hired me from that. What do you like about the company? Benefitz is like my family. I’ve made life long friendships through this company. Probably 80% of my close mates are people who work, or have worked for Benefitz. What are your interests outside of work? I started snowboarding about the same time I started at Benefitz. Pretty late for an old guy to start boarding, but at 44 I’m still at it. I’ve been boarding in Chile and Japan, as well as good old NZ. What’s one of your favourite projects you’ve worked on? I have taken on the lead design role for SKY TV work

that comes through the studio. It’s a big brand, and I know it pretty well. So any exciting SKY creative work that comes in really gets me going. What’s the best place you’ve been in the world and why? I’d have to say Japan. It totally left me wanting more. I went over there earlier this year with a group of great friends. Most of the time was spent on the slopes, but we did our best to experience as much of the Japanese culture as possible. The people there are the friendliest, most courteous people you will ever meet. The plan is for a return trip there is 2020, perhaps when the Rugby World Cup is on! (Obviously not a rugby head - he will have missed it by at least 3-4 months! - Ed). Any advice for budding designers? Yeah. I believe that starting any design or creative work should begin with a big blank piece of paper and a sharp pencil. Just scribble away anything that pops into your mind, no matter how random or un-related. Trust me, those random links are very often the places that great lateral thinking ideas come from.

Lee is one of my favourites!

Making personal photographs come alive It is no secret that our world is changing. The way people communicate is moving constantly, which is why as a business we need to keep evolving. Investing in new opportunities, investing in people and investing in technology are key strategies for facing this moving landscape.

An exciting newer facet to our business is what we call ‘Benefitz Photohub’. In this area we make personal photographs come alive. Benefitz Photohub has involved investing in new technology that has resulted in us becoming leaders in the production of personalised products featuring photographs. “We have created a facility that produces a range of products featuring personal photographs,” explains Benefitz Managaing Director Aidan Bennett. “The products include Photobooks, Calendars, Posters, Greeting Cards, Canvas Prints, Mugs and other such items as photoboards and cushions. "In this digital world people now take thousands of photos and often they never leave their mobile devices. What we are doing is working with well known wholesalers and retailers to give their customers loads of options to make these photos

come alive, being used for treasured personal momentos or gifts.” Benefitz Photohub mainly draws on existing production areas of the business to produce these items, but has also included the introduction of new machinery added to ensure efficient production. “Our Benefitz JetSX B2 Inkjet Printer was a key ingredient in the mix for the Photohub project. The combination of this machine and our Xerox machinery means we have a powerful personalised printing capacity. We also added a range of finishing equipment including a Perfect Binder, a Hard Case Binder, a UV Coater, a Fujifilm Photo Printer, special shape cutting machinery and guillotines. "A totally new area for us has been gifting products which feature treasured photographs. We now have machinery

that produces printed Mugs and Beer Steins, and we have also installed the Flatbed Promo Printer (featured in this issue) which enables us to print on virtually any item. "Benefitz Photohub project also includes our large format printing resource to produce Canvas Prints as well as Posters, Wood and Corrugated Iron Prints. We already had the best printing technology for this purpose, but have added more automated finishing gear such as a canvas stretching machine imported from Europe.” To complete this new offering, our in house web development team also developed state-of-the-art online systems that track these projects right through production to delivery. This has made things very easy for ourselves, and our retail and wholesale partners, to track the progress of every item.

North Shore’s monthly magazine! Back in July 2010, the first issue of Channel magazine was published by Benefitz. Managing Director Aidan Bennett felt the Shore needed a positive, quality monthly magazine that celebrated local people and community, and encouraged people to support local businesses. And that original ethos has remained unchanged. Channel is now in its 10th year, having produced more than 100 issues, and has become a well-read and respected regular feature of Shore life. It has grown in size and distribution from an initial 17,000 copies and we now have 36,500 magazines reaching homes and businesses each month on the Shore. From day one, there has been a website that goes handin-hand with the magazine. This website has undergone

continuous development (by our inhouse Benefitz team) and is now used as the 'Hub' for collecting content for the magazine. Content goes live online the moment it is ready for the magazine. The website features lots of 'behind the scenes' technology that makes publishing a 120+ page monthly magazine and website as easy as possible. Aidan said: “Our success has really been a snowball effect. And I do believe we have really established a

Over three decades of Golf! (Score cards that is)

Benefitz has moved into its 31st year of producing score cards for golf clubs throughout New Zealand. During this time it is estimated we have printed up to 70-80 million score cards. The company first got into producing these score cards back in 1988 when Managing Director Aidan Bennett spotted an opportunity to enhance the quality of the score cards being used by golfers at each club. “I was playing golf one day and was scoring on this shabby card and it dawned on me that score cards could become a powerful advertising vehicle,” explains Aidan. “So I set about designing an attractive generic score card that could be rolled out across a number of clubs. I approached one of the big sponsors of golf back then – an insurer – and they loved the concept. With sponsorship from that company, we rolled the new

Wayne Sloan Senior Signage Specialist

When it comes to graphic application – applying adhesive graphics – there ain’t too many better than our man Wayne Sloan. He’s been part of the team now for quite a few years and loves nothing more than plying his skilled trade while chatting to Benefitz customers at their place of work. Wayne always has a big smile and that has got bigger recently due to being happily married to Melanie. We love your work Wayne! How long have you been at Benefitz? Five years. How did you come to join Benefitz? I always knew Benefitz had a signage department, as a friend of mine was the production manager of the sign shop. So I got the role through knowing him. What do you like about the company? The people that work at Benefitz are awesome! It feels like you are a part of the Benefitz family. Also the fast pace of the workflow is always a great challenge. What are your interests outside of work? • Being a part of a wider community at our Church, Inspire Church. • My new wife, Melanie - we got married in January 2019. • Road Cycling, RPM Sprint Class, I've always loved high intensity cardio workouts. • My faith in the cross of Christ always makes life exciting and keeps you passionate to live a better life.

The people that work at Benefitz are Awesome! It feels like you are a part of the Benefitz family. Also the fast pace of the workflow is always a great challenge. What piece of machinery/technology excites you most at Benefitz? The VUTEK GS3250LX Pro flatbed machine. It prints at high resolution onto a wide range of media and substrates, which is super impressive, and it even prints using white inks. Great for signage and loads of other things! What’s the best place you’ve been in the world and why? Wow, great question! Whistler Blackcomb Mountain Resort in Canada. The mountain and snow conditions were super impressive!

Benefitz in the Community New signage for Lake House Arts Benefitz has recently supported local arts and heritage learning centre Lake House Arts with the installation of totally new external signage. Lake House Arts Centre, located on Fred Thomas Drive in Takapuna, comprises three relocated and renovated historic buildings: Lake House and two Fort Cautley Army Barracks from Narrowneck. From within these buildings a range of art activities and services are on offer to the public seven days a week, exhibitions changing regularly in the gallery spaces. Lake House has a café, three classroom spaces, exhibition galleries, venue hire rooms, outdoor sculptures and beautiful grounds and gardens for picnics or outdoor events. “The Lake House Arts Centre is a wonderful community facility for the arts and we were keen for their tired signage to be better,” says Benefitz Managing Director Aidan Bennett. “Like all charitable trusts in the arts space, funding is an issue, so we were keen to help. So I approached manager Grae (Burton) about helping out.

We collaborated with Grae to design all the signage, and then manufactured and installed it all to support the Lake House. "The project also provided an opportunity for the Benefitz team to show-off our capability for providing the entire solution. There was design to be done, there were structures to be built, images to be printed on a range of substrates, there were shapes to be cut and a range of applications and installations to be carried out. This was all done by the Benefitz team. “We love playing our part in the community, and providing this signage is a real way we can contribute to this great facility,” adds Aidan Bennett. “The project involved around 10 external signs of many shapes and sizes – large and small.” Benefitz has also built and developed the Lake House website in recent years. Ballistics thought it was time to update their shop front sign of more than 10 years! Benefitz had the solution to jazz this up. This sign spanning 4.8m wide was cut 20mm signex board with an ACM face using the Benefitz CNC router. LED lights were used to illuminate the sign. Printing Wooden Lids! We are often approached by our customers with a problem that they need help solving. With this particular project we were asked to provide a solution for printing directly onto 500 wooden lids. The print was to be simple and effective and give the appearance of a ‘copper’ logo. It didn’t take director Dallas Bennett long to find the perfect solution within our wide array of print machinery – on our little Mimaki Flatbed Digital Printer that can print on just about anything! We agreed with the happy customer that the end result turned out tops! Account Manager: Dallas Bennett Design/Creative: Supplied Print: Benefitz Mimaki Flatbed Promo Printer

Ernest Davis, Man of the People Book At Benefitz we have carved out quite a niche in printing shorter run books. It is a growing market. We recently printed 250 copies of this title for The Booksmiths. Phantom Billstickers Company Profile

We recently produced this very high quality case bound company profile for Phantom Billstickers. They approached us due to the fact we could print and finish small quantities of the high quality 44-page wide format book they desired. We printed a total of 220 of the 340mm x 240mm books, with 20 finished as case bound hard cover books and 200 as PUR bound books. The books also required laminating, diecutting, gold foiling and included translucent sheets printed with white. “This project used all three press mediums we have in our smaller format plant with some tricky finishing,” says Benefitz book specialist Kent Bowyer-Sidwell. “Presses used for the job were our Xerox Iridesse, our Komori Offset 5-colour and our JetSX InkJet Press to produce a superb showcase corporate brochure for Phantom Bill stickers, the happy customer.” Account Manager: Kent Bowyer-Sidwell, Blake Douglas Design/creative: Supplied Print: Benefitz JetSX B2 Inkjet Press, Iridesse 6 Colour Xerox Press Finishing: Benefitz High Speed Folding Machine, Benefitz Muller Martini Stitcher, Benefitz Horizon Perfect PUR Binder, Benefitz Horizon Hard Case Bookmaker

NZ Cricket Head Office Signage & Display

Benefitz recently played a part by producing and installing signage and display items at NZ Cricket’s head office in Auckland. This included large printed wall graphics, 3D logos, printed graphics on meeting room windows and the creation of a ‘Gallery of the Greatest’ display using various signage items and supplied items – helmut, stumps, bat, ball etc. “I was particularly proud of the way we came up with signage solutions for the 'Gallery of the Greatest'," says Account Manager Rhys Lloyd, who led the project for Benefitz. “NZ Cricket’s design agency supplied a 2d rendering and our team came up with ways of bringing the supplied drawings to life by fabricating a wide range of sign and display solutions depicting NZ Cricket awards and finding ways to suitably hang the supplied items. The entire project scope involved lots of printed graphics and many fabricated items – all installed by our sign team.” Account Manager: Rhys Lloyd Design/Creative: Supplied Print: Benefitz Mutoh Large Format Machinery, Benefitz Vutek EFI LED Flatbed Printer, Benefitz HP Latex Large Format Printer Finishing: Benefitz CNC Router Installation: Benefitz Signage Team Application: Benefitz Signage Team

MSC Consulting Engineers Company Profile

We love it when we take projects through from concept to delivery, and this was the case with this company profile for Takapuna-based MSC, who have been Benefitz customers for many years. Our team undertook the copywriting for the 24-page landscape profile as well as the design and then it was printed and finished on our volume printing machinery, high speed folder and stitching line. “MSC do some pretty high-end consulting engineering work and were keen to highlight some of these projects in their company profile,” says Benefitz Account Manager Blake Douglas. “So the document needed to be great quality, which was achieved with good design and printing workmanship. Waipareira Trust Conference Presentation Documents The brief for the Benefitz team was that Waipareira were going to hold a company conference and required a document that clearly outlined what each of the departments contributed within the organisation. It needed to look and feel great. Led by Account Manager Paul Barratt, the Benefitz crew provided options and in consultation with the Waipareira marketing team settled on a solution. This very much revolved around the power of the Benefitz short run digital printing and finishing capability. The finishing for the six items included: PUR Binding, soft touch Velvet lamination, UV overglossing, diecutting, hand forming and shrink wrapping for final presentation. There were five PUR Bound Journals and a covering document that secured these in a very professional presentation.

“We were under an extremely tight deadline,” says Paul Barratt. “Waipareira took delivery just in time for their conference. They didn’t think we would make the deadline, but they were thrilled, the final product exceeded their expectations. Mexicali Fresh Fabric Bench Seat Covers

The Benefitz XL printing team recently printed seat covers on a cotton-linen blend fabric using our fabric printing machinery. “This project really demonstrated our ability to print vibrantly on fabric,” says Account Manager Sean Hawkins. “After we had printed the fabric it was sent to an upholsterer to be made into bench seats and bench back rests to go into Mexicali restaurants. We were really happy with the way this turned out, the image is vibrant and the fabric still feels soft. The fabric can be washed and is very durable after being heat cured by our XL print team.” Account Manager: Sean Hawkins Print: Benefitz Mutoh 2.5 Metre Fabric Printer

The Seafood Collective Signage (inc. LED Neon)

The team at Benefitz recently assisted with the signage at a new store called The Seafood Collective. There was a whole range of interior and exterior signage, including big printed images – all produced and installed by our sign team. An interesting new feature was the use of LED Silicone Neon to create a neon effect on the exterior signage. “This is another first for Benefitz with an innovative and costeffective solution for the customer,” says Benefitz director Dallas Bennett. “The client wanted something that was different and would stand them apart from what was around them. We used this new LED Silicone Neon product with an 8mm lamp by 16mm high, and it blazes bright and looks great." Auckland Grammar School ‘The Spelling Bee’ Production Graphics

The Benefitz team produced large format printed items to promote the show, also a large nine-metre-wide hanging banner to act as a backdrop for the show, and a complete 130 square metre floor graphic which was applied by the Benefitz sign team. We also printed the programme for the show. “The thing I most like about this project is the school came to us looking for a solution to a problem,” says Benefitz director Robert Johnson. “The stage needed to be cleared the day after the production finished to make way for the school’s 150th festivities. So their usual method of painting the auditorium floor was not an option. It was great we could provide the short term floor adhesive solution that we could apply and then remove quickly. At the end of the day the school was very satisfied with our all-round solution for the show. It was a thrill to then also help with items for the 150th Celebration.”” Account Manager: Robert Johnson Print: Benefitz Mutoh Large Format Machinery, Benefitz Vutek EFI LED Flatbed Printer, Benefitz HP Latex Large Format Printer Installation: Benefitz Signage Team Application: Benefitz Signage Team

Big Promo at Fine Wine

The strength of the Benefitz offering was on display recently with a range of in-store items produced and installed for a promotion at the impressive Fine Wine Delivery Company super stores at Mt Wellington and Mairangi Bay. The Fine Wine team are great marketers and asked if we could help with their big promo they had coming up. Led by Account Manager Blake Douglas, members of the Benefitz team went to both stores to look at the options and provided advice on the best ways to make an impact with printed images. At that stage all the measurements were taken as well. “Timing for the project was critical,” says Blake Douglas. “The Fine Wine marketing crew created the artwork based on our measurements and specs, from which we printed and installed all items. We managed to install all graphics at both stores in one day which is a real credit to our Benefitz install team.” The major promotion had $50,000 worth of travel up for grabs for a lucky customer. A strong offer that was projected very well with powerful graphics designed in-house by the Fine Wine Delivery Company. As is demonstrated in the accompanying photos, the combination of all the promo items in-store certainly got the message across to all customers in-store and out. Strong billboards – PVC mesh – were produced and installed on the outside of the stores using the simple Benefitz tensioned railing system. Floor Decals also made a great impact. Other items included Hanging Banners, Posters, A-frame Inserts; Palight and Corflute prints, Free Standing Strutted Prints and Trolley Inserts. “This project certainly demonstrated our all-round capability,” adds Blake Douglas. “To be able to produce all these items cost-effectively, efficiently and then have them installed makes it very easy for the customer. It is also very pleasing when it looks so good. I understand the promotion went very well." Golf Warehouse Big Signage

At Benefitz we love producing big signage and we have been doing that recently at the prominent Golf Warehouse building on Newton Road facing the North-Western Motorway in Auckland City. This project has included applying a large red strip with white vinyl cut lettering to the building's west and north sides and then our team using the original signwriting technique (with stencil and paper plots and black paint) to provide new signwriting to parts of the building. A large printed image was also installed using the Benefitz ESR Tensioned Railing System with massive printed banners. This is another project that really emphasises the skills of our signage team and the advantage we have with our powerful big printing capabilities. Methanex Values 3D Letters

Methanex wanted to display their values in a unique way on a pillar in the middle of their office space. To achieve this we made the main value CARE from 20mm thick acrylic, then the rest of the letters from 6mm acrylic with a wood grain vinyl applied to the face. All letters were spaced off the wall using mounts to achieve a drop shadow. This now is a great statement piece for the office to work around. Life stories made easy! Ease and affordability of system proving popular The Benefitz team has recently developed an innovative online system aimed at making it easy for older folk to publish their life stories. This new system is called 'My Life Story Book’ – The system essentially provides an online platform to build the book, and then provides the option of producing printed copies, while also publishing the book online. Benefitz Managing Director Aidan Bennett conceived the system and then worked with the Benefitz inhouse web development team to build the platform. He then helped his own mother Lillian to write her life story – as the pilot book – and built and published that book on the system. “I am passionate about providing an easy method for people to tell their life stories,” says Aidan Bennett. 'Everyone has a story, and many of our older folk have experienced very interesting lives with the changes that have happened in their lifetimes. Documenting their lives is great for them, for their families and for generations to come. A key aspect of the system we have developed is the story remains online forever." One person who is thrilled with the new system is David Greenwood, who worked with Aidan to use the system to publish his life story late last year. David had taken a year or more to write his life story – 126,000 words – and was looking for a solution to get it printed and published. “My daughter saw the article in Channel Magazine about Aidan’s new system so I made contact with him via email in early November,” says David Greenwood. “Aidan replied very quickly and popped out to see me within a few days to explain the process. He took away my draft word file and very quickly provided an affordable price for the book to be built on the system.” Aidan worked with David Greenwood to estimate the approximate paging of the book and how it should be structured with the chapters and photos etc. The estimate was the book would be around 450-470 pages. “I was thrilled that Aidan not only offered the efficient system to get my book published, but clearly also had very good knowledge of book publishing to provide me with guidance on How awesome aspects such as is this book cover photos, system! chapter titles, proof reading and overall

David Greenwood with copies of his book. He wrote 126,000 words which resulted in a book of 470 pages.

book structure.” Production of the book started on the Benefitz system in early December and David had printed copies of his book – 470 pages – ready for Christmas. The whole process took around three weeks. David Greenwood was thrilled. “When we started Aidan said it would be around one to two months but it was done much quicker. I guess I was lucky that Aidan worked very closely with me, as I know he used the opportunity to review and refine the system he has pioneered. But I was thrilled to have finished books, with some going under the tree for family members at Christmas.” A total of 20 books were produced for David Greenwood -15 soft cover and five hard cover. David made the decision that he didn’t want his book to be live online immediately, but it will be able to be turned on and made live at any time in the future. Three decades of giving back Right from the inception of the business in 1988, Benefitz has had a philosophy of playing our part in our community. This has been led by founder and Managing Director Aidan Bennett, who says he had that installed into him during his upbringing. “My late father Noel was always strong in his messages of playing a part in the community, giving back and generally treating people well,” explains Aidan. “He used to tell both Dallas and I to treat people as we’d like to be treated ourselves, and that really sums things up. That’s what we have applied to our business. “So right from the outset we decided to be a business that gives back. We provide products and services that also add value for not-for-profit organisations and charitable causes. We do make monetary contributions to some organisations, but a great deal of what we do is supporting by way of our products and services – design, web development, printing, display, exhibition and signage.

“Our approach is to be consistent with our support which is good for us and good for the organisations we support. The longer we are involved the more we are appreciated and the better that is for our brand. Our community loves us more! "Benefitz has been a long-time supporter of North Harbour Rugby. This support has endured close to 30 years. We were a smaller sponsor in the early days and have been a major sponsor for the past 15 years. The Benefitz logo has been on the collar of the Harbour Rugby team for most (if not all) of those 15 years." The North Harbour Club and Charitable Trust has also been an organisation that Benefitz has supported for more than two decades. The North Harbour Club promotes the annual AIMES Awards, celebrating excellence achieved by young people from our home patch in the areas of the Arts; Innovation; Music; Education; Sport; Service to the Community.
