Early-Morning House Fire Draws Multi-Town Response in Chaplin CHAPLIN, CT - At 12:56 a.m. on Thursday, May 29, 2025, the Chaplin Fire Department, with mu­ tual aid from North Windham En­ gine 102, Willimantic Engine 101, Eastford Engine 271, Mansfield Squad 407, UConn FAST, KB Am­ bulance, and a Windham para­ medic, was dispatched to 811 Phoenixville Road for a house fire.

At 1:04 a.m.. Car 9 requested Chaplin to be re-toned and added Hampton to the response. Car 9 ar­ rived at 1:09 a.m. to find heavy fire coming from a two-story, wood-

A working fire was transmitted, adding the Ledyard Career staff, Poquetanuck, Mashantucket Pequot, Old Mystic, Center Groton, American Ambulance, and the Mohegan Tribe for the FAST. Gales Ferry Ladder 25 and Ledyard Engine 13 arrived and placed a deck gun in operation, as well as a 216” attack line, and es­ tablished a water supply from a hydrant located in front of the ad­ dress.

Gales Ferry Engine 21 sent their manpower up, while Ledyard

Engine 11 laid a 5” supply line from the second hydrant.

Additional hand lines were put in place, and the bulk of the fire was knocked down. Companies remained on scene for approxi­ mately three hours extinguishing numerous hot spots.

Laurel Hill and North Stoning ton provided coverage for both stations.

The Ledyard Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause.

Included in that class are two individuals who will join the ranks of the Norwich Fire Department: Daniel Benjamin and Ryan Douchette.

Firefighter Benjamin has been assigned to Platoon 3 and is the son of current Battalion Chief Marc Benjamin, a 26-year veteran of the department.

Quinebaug Valley Dispatchers initiated an autolaunch of the Lifestar Helicopter due to the severity of the injuries. Car 54, ET-154 and Am bulance 654 responded to the scene and pack­ aged the patient. Engine 154 established the landing zone in the senior center parking lot on Newent Road. Am bulance 654 transported to the landing zone where they intercepted w ith Medic 28 until the helicopter arrived.

While conducting a search and rescue of the two-story apartment complex, he became separated from his fel­ low firefighters and a mayday was called. He was res­ cued from the structure and transported to the emergency room where he was pronounced deceased.

His colleagues im­ mediately performed CPR and he was then rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Virginia: Jacob Scott Kincaid, 37 Rank: Firefighter/EMT-I Incident Date: February 3, 2025 Death Date: February 3, 2025 Fire Department: Richlands Fire-Rescue Initial Summary: On Monday, February 3, 2025, Fire­ fighter/EMT-I Jacob Scott Kincaid had just completed a mandatory paramedic class clinical. While on his way home, he was involved in a single motor vehicle acci­ dent and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Missouri: Christopher Mykel Clevenger, 33 Rank: Captain Incident Date: January 25, 2025 Death Date: January 26, 2025 Fire Department: West Central Missouri Fire Protection District Initial Summary: On Saturday, January 25, 2025, Cap­ tain Christopher Mykel Clevenger responded to an emergency medical call at a residence. The next day, Sunday, January 26, 2025, Captain Clevenger was found unresponsive at his home. He was immediately rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased from an apparent heart attack.

Two Structure Fires Drain City of Coverage in Springfield SPRINGFIELD, M A - I t has been said that the fire service is hours upon hours of sheer bore­ dom interrupted by moments of chaos. That is exactly what hap­ pened on the hot, humid afternoon of Wednesday, June 4, 2025, in the City of Springfield, MA. At 2:55 p.m., SFD fire companies were toned out to respond to 87 Pheland St. for a re­ ported structure fire. Companies arrived on loca­ tion to find light smoke showing from the second floor of a twostory wood-frame dwelling and went to work on a room-and-contents fire.

Three minutes into that fire, with half of the department's re­ sources now committed on scene or en route. Engine Company One — who had just left the re­ pair garage and was heading back to quarters — spotted a column of black smoke three blocks from their location on Bay St. They asked Fire Alarm if any 911 calls were being received for that area, to which the dispatcher re­ sponded that no, no calls were coming in.

When Engine One arrived on scene at 47-49 Dawes St., it was just then that five 911 calls were put in for the fire. Engine One stretched their handline while the remainder of the first alarm as­ signment was toned out and went to work. A second alarm for Dawes St. was sounded and, as companies cleared from Pheland, they responded directly to Dawes.

With one fire in the overhaul phase and one now at a second alarm, all eight city firehouses were empty, and over half a dozen area departments were called for mutual aid. The fire on Dawes Street, which started on the second floor in the kitchen, was mostly knocked down within 20 minutes. However, companies had to overhaul both the second floor and attic and required fresh troops to rotate in due to the heat and humidity.

While no significant injuries were sustained by residents, 11 people were displaced by the fire and were assisted by the Red Cross. The cause of the fire re­ mains under investigation.

Fall River Firefighters 2025 Memorial Sunday FALL RIVER, MA - On Sun­ day, June 8th, past and present firefighters and their families along the families of deceased members gathered to honor Fall River Firefighters who died in the line of duty.

Everyone gath­ ered at the Fire­ fighters Memorial in Kennedy Park, while the firefight­ ers mustered at the opposite side of the park to march to the memorial.

Fire Chief Jef­ frey Bacon opened the ceremony before introducing Association President CJ Ponte for his re­ marks. Fire Department Chaplin Fr. Michael Racine offered a solemn prayer, a wreath of flow­ ers was laid at the Memorial, and the flag was lowered to half-staff.

A ceremonial bell was then rung as each name of a deceased mem­ bers was read aloud. Then the sig­ nal 555 was rung to signify the alarm code for a deceased mem­ ber.

Structure Fire on Maxwell St. Quickly Knocked Firefighters HAVERHILL, MA - On Sun­ day, June 1st at 2:58 PM, the Haverhill Fire Department re­ sponded to a report of a structure fire at 14 Maxwell Street. Haver­ hill Police were first to arrive on scene and confirmed that all occu­ pants had safely exited the home.

Haverhill Fire Engine 1, staffed with four firefighters and located less than a mile away, ar­ rived at 3:01 PM and reported smoke showing from the resi­ dence. Engine l ’s crew immedi­ ately stretched a hose line and began making aggressive fire at­ tack. Deputy Chief Link arrived moments later and transmitted a working fire.

Upon entry. Engine 1 crews located a fire in the garage and began suppression efforts. Engine 3 arrived shortly after and secured a water supply for Engine 1. The fire was quickly knocked down through the coordinated efforts of Engine 1 and Engine 3. Rescue 1, Ladder 1, and Engine 4 arrived to assist with ventilation and over­ haul operations. As Engine 2 and Ladder 4 were canceled pre ar­ rival.

fighters provided the animal with oxygen and evaluated it for in­ juries. The cat appeared to be un­ injured. It is unknown if any other pets were in the residence.

While fire investigators re­ mained on scene. Engine 1 contin­ ued to monitor for hotspots.

Engine 2 and Ladder 4 were re­ leased before arrival, while En­ gine 3, Rescue 1, and Ladder 1 were released from the scene fol­ lowing initial operations.

Haverhill Police closed Maxwell Street to traffic during the response. PrideStar EMS pro­ vided standby EMS support at the scene. Thankfully, all residents were able to evacuate safely, and no injuries were reported.

The fire, which appeared to have originated in the garage, was contained to that area. The cause remains under investigation by the Haverhill Fire Department, Haverhill Police, the Massachu­ setts State Fire Marshal’s Office, and the Massachusetts State Po­ lice.

Second-Alarm Struck for Chelsea Garage Fire CHELSEA, MA - At approxi­ mately 4:15 PM on April 29th, Chelsea Fire Alarm transmitted a box for a reported building fire on Heard Street. Dispatch advised re­ sponding units that they were re­ ceiving multiple 911 calls.

Engine 2, al­ ready nearby on a medical call, re­ ported visible smoke in the distance.

Upon arrival. Car 3 confirmed the report and declared a work­ ing fire, prompting the response of all Chelsea fire companies and mutual aid.

Firefighters located the fire in a one-and-a-half-story garage behind a Heard Street residence, with ad­ ditional access from Blossom Street. Crews quickly stretched a line and began knocking down heavy exterior fire along the Bravo and Charlie sides of the structure.

Tower 1 was positioned in a nearby driveway to facilitate vertical ven­ tilation from the bucket.

At 4:21 PM, Command re­ quested a second-alarm, bringing in assistance from Everett, Revere, Boston, Medford, and Massport.

The bulk of the fire was knocked down within 15 minutes, though crews remained on scene for over an hour conducting overhaul and checking for possible extension.

Many peo­ ple think that the count of friends on social media meant that they had friends. As we all know, the friends on any social media does not mean a thing. So many people are lonely no matter how many social media

Some people may post on social media and then wait for someone to like what they put up, to justify their existence.

The program was talking that people who feel lonely may develop depression and that the depression may lead to suicide. So how can we stop that process.

Many people have gone to video conferencing but that is no help. Peo­ ple still need to meet face to face, shake hands with people, look into each others eyes.

We are not supposed to be peo­ ple living in our own worlds. We are to be social beings.

If someone of our community is missing, we should check on them.

We should see if they are alright and be caring and see if they have any needs?

We used to bring meals over to neighbors or would share meals.

Why don't we still do that? Why don't we call people that we have not spoken to for a while? I know that it is easy to say that if we did not hear from them in a while, why don't they call me or maybe I should just delete their contact information.

We say that there are many events or things for people to do but the person may be getting depressed to the point where they don't want to go anywhere. What the person may need is a friend to invite them to go together.

I know that some police agencies do wellness visits on citizens that their families or friends have not heard from them in a while. Some veteran groups reach out to people by bringing a pizza to veterans who have been out of touch with people.

We can probably make a half an hour out of our week to check on people who live alone or have an ill­ ness, to help lift their spirits. When was the last time that you played checkers with an elderly person or visited someone who cannot get out of their apartment in a while?

There are people that may be at­ tending functions and going to par­ ties but they are alone in a crowd because people just walk by with smiles that are painted on. You are asking them how they are doing and they say "fine", with a smile on their

face but they are feeling so low and we just keep the conversation very light.

One of the things that I appreci­ ated was years ago I had to have sur­ gery. As a side effect of the surgery, I felt lonely and felt depressed. A friend was working in an office and he pulled out a chair and invited me to sit down. I told him that I did not want to take part. He told me that I did not have to say a thing but sit

down and take part as I felt comfort­ able. That simple gesture, helped me so much and was a big help.

It may not take much to help someone know that they are not alone and that they are cared for.

Please go places and interact with people. Talk with a server when you go out to eat. Just interacting with people at any level, can really be of assistance or talk with someone on the phone.

Have a check in buddy. Check on someone each day. It will do them and you a world of good.

Reach out to someone, anyone.

Help cure loneliness before it gets to depression.

Two People Rescued Over Ground Ladders in Fall River FALL RIVER, MA - On Tuesday, June 3rd, firefighters were dispatched to 119 Emmett Street for a report of a fire and two people trapped on the second floor of a two-story wood-frame home, unable to es­ cape.

Car 3 (Com­ mand) arrived on scene and reported fire on the first floor with heavy smoke throughout the structure. Fire­ fighters from En­ gine 5 and Ladder 2 placed a ground ladder to a sec­ ond-floor bedroom where the two occupants were trapped and as­ sisted them down the ladder to safety. Both victims were trans­ ported to Rhode Island Hospital, suffering from smoke inhalation.

The crew of Engine 4 stretched an attack line to the seat of the fire and extinguished all visible flames, while the crew of Heavy Rescue 1 conducted a pri­ mary search, which proved nega­ tive. Several pets were rescued, some requiring resuscitation.

Interior crew s reported fire in the A/D corner and began extinguishm ent. Crews reached a hatch to a crawl space under the b uilding and made access to fin d that an appliance may have been the cause of the flames.

Rollover in Waltham with Unconscious Driver WALTHAM, MA - At 8:15 PM on June 17th, Waltham Fire received a call fo r a tru c k rollover near Trapello Road. Engine 7, Rescue 1 and Medic 1 responded. Firefighters could not fin d the acci­ dent because it was north of Trapello Road. When they arrived, they found a tru c k on its side w ith the driver trapped. F irefighters had to extricate the driver, w ho was unconscious. He was transported to Lahey Hospital s till unconscious.

Engines 2 and 7 were dis­ patched. While responding, the 911 center said they could see heavy smoke in the sky. Deputy Chief

Upon arrival, they they found a tractor fully-involved. There was no

trailer. It took firefighters about 30 minutes to put the fire out.

The DEP and Cambridge Water Commission were requested, as it was near their reservoir.

DRACUT, MA — Chief Michael Cunha is pleased to report that eight Dracut Firefighters recently took part in specialized training to conduct w ater rescues in s w iftly m oving and static water.

The eight Dracut Special Operations Swift-Water Team m embers participated in training th is week in both Beaver Brook and Lake Mascuppic.

Training fo r m aking water rescues in sw iftly m oving, dynam ic water was conducted in Beaver Brook at the Arm y Specialist Mathew G. Boule Memorial Park on Monday m orning. Training fo r making water rescues in static w ater was conducted at the tow n beach on Lake M ascuppic later on Monday. The train in g also prepared firefig hte rs to rescue both passive and aggressive patients, and to conduct searches fo r victim s from shore.

The training was led by Firefighter Chris Gagne, a 10-year veteran of the Dracut Fire Department, who has been a certified sw ift-w ater rescue instru ctor fo r three years.

Firefighter Gagne conducted the training fo r seven other members of the Dracut Special Operations Swift-Water Team, w hich includes Firefighter Derek Santos, Firefighter Ryan Descheneaux, Lt. John Carroca, Firefighter Tom Joyce, Firefighter Gage Brouillette, Firefighter Ryan Charretteand Firefighter Mike Silva.

T his a c tu a lly w o rk s best when one fire ­ fig h te r (E xp lo re rs and J u n io r fire fig h te rs too) s its in the en­ gine and c a lls the CAN report and signal w hile the rest o f the g ro u p is o b s e rvin g the same p ic tu re /v id e o in a separate room re co rd in g th e ir own re­ port fo r com parison purposes.

W altham O fficer Involved in C ollision; M inor Injuries Reported WALTHAM, MA - On May 21st, a Waltham police officer called headquarters to report that he was involved in a crash at 500 Tot­ ten Road, and re­ quested EMS. Waltham Engine 2, Rescue 1, Medic 1, and Ambulance 1 were dispatched. The police officer was stmck by a sedan and flipped over. He ex­ tricated himself. Two people were trans­ ported to the hospital with minor in­ juries.

The Waltham Police recon­ struction team was investigating the accident.

I actually read it in one day! Not because I don’t have a life, but because it is so well written! The author grew up in Indiana, and one of his inter­ ests is the history of the Indi­ anapolis Fire Department. He has also read many books on fire­ fighting, apparatus and histories,

and served as a volunteer fire­ fighter and on the rescue team of the Indianapolis Speedway. All of the incidents written about hap­ pened many years ago, starting in the late 1800’s and up through the early 1900’s. They were natural and manmade disasters. They are a mixture of fires, train wrecks, col­ lapses, explosions and cave-ins.

Many were the result of nature, man made mistakes, lack of infor­ mation, misinterpretation of infor­ mation and what have you. The results were very tragic, although there were some miraculous res­ cues and recoveries from injury.

But among some of the miraculous rescues, some of the individuals later died. There are some draw­ ings and diagrams to help the reader. One thing I learned is that the Indianapolis Speedway was originally in the city of Indianapo­ lis. The town of Speedway was part of the city, but in 1926 it be­ came a town of its own with its own fire department, which is why the raceway track is now in Speed­ way. This book is a page turner, at least from my perspective, and I would recommend it to anyone in­ terested in historical disasters.
