r. Gary Hall,Director ofFinance and Operations, steps down at the end ofthis school year, ending 25 years of service at Belmont Hill. His impending departure will be felt as a great loss to the school community. In his announcement of Mr. Hall's plans to the faculty and staff, Head of School Richard Melvoin warmly referred to him as an extraordinary leader of this school."All of us have benefited in innumerable ways from Gary's stewardship of this institution. He has worked extraordinarily hard for Belmont Hill, and the number of areas in which he excels is remarkable. He will be greatly missed." Working tirelessly to ensure smooth running of the school with his behind-the-scenes efforts, Mr. Hall has long been admired by the faculty and staff. Few students, however, have had the opportunity to interact with Mr. Hall. But this writer has been fortunate to have interviewed Mr. Hall several times in the past years. Sitting in the same chair at the same conference table in his office high above the dining room, just as before, I conducted perhaps my last interview with him. On his desk in the corner of his office stood two computer monitors flashing, on his conference table paperwork covering end to end. Mr. Hall seems always busy, yet he was gracious to take the time to sit down and talk about his retirement and his years at the Hill. "One of the most vivid memories is having seen the roof of the theater catching fire a few summers ago..1 was here on campus. I looked out the window and saw lightning strike the roof of the theater, and it started smoking," recalled Mr. Hall, looking out the window, pointing to the exact spot on the roof. When asked why he planned to step away this spring, he replied,"The timing is good because I won't be leaving in the middle of something." Making sure that Belmont Hill is in a good place when he leaves has once again demonstrated Mr. Hall's dedication and commitment to the school. Good luck, Mr. Hall, and thank you for all your contributions since 1985. You will be greatly missed. by Jay Po,'11 236
