written by MARJORIE TURNER HOLLMAN, Contributing Writer Many of us older residents can recall the name Corriveau—it was the name at the bottom of our tax bills. J. Food Pantry Needs Summer Support

The Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry, located at Saint Blaise Church, 1158 South Main Street, Bellingham, is reaching out to area individuals, businesses, and organizations as we head into the summer months. Food Pantry Director Sue Durkin said, “First, we would like to say thank you. We’ve been blessed to be the recipient of some recent food drives—Stamp Out Hunger Postal Drive, The Dollar Tree store on Pulaski Blvd, Bellingham, and Cornerstone Chiropractic in Bellingham Plaza. These food drives have helped us continue to provide some food to those in need. “However, as summer approaches, our food supply is once again getting low. Traditionally, food pantries struggle during this time of year. As we think ahead to well-deserved vacations, please keep in mind that there are many in our community who continue to struggle to put food on the table for a variety of reasons: disability, underemployment, seniors living on fixed incomes. Others are working full-time, but still not making enough money to make ends meet. Joining the Greater Boston Food Bank last fall has increased the food pantry’s access to food. Some of the food received comes from USDA and MEFAP; however, Loaves & Fishes has to pay for some of the food, in addition to paying a monthly food-delivery fee. Monetary donations are needed to help offset these costs. Lovin’ Spoonfuls, a non-profit organization whose

mission is “facilitating the rescue and distribution of healthy, fresh food that would otherwise be discarded,” has recently begun to make deliveries to Loaves and Fishes. Currently, we are receiving produce from Hannaford’s and bread and often dairy products from Whole Foods; BJ’s in Franklin donates baked goods and pastries. The pantry would love to partner with more local businesses, farms, and even restaurants. “What you don’t use or need, we might,” said Durkin. “We would happily publicize any organization that works with us.” The Pantry relies completely on the kindness of donors and volunteers to operate. During the holidays, we see a tremendous outpouring of generosity, and we attempt to stretch those foodstuffs and dollars as far as possible into the next year. Grants and donations from various MA and RI businesses and foundations help with some of the need. But summer is always a challenge. Donations of low-sugar breakfast cereals, healthful side dishes (like rice, which can be stretched for more than one meal), mac and cheese, tuna, and peanut butter are always helpful. Please contact Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry at 508-966-2862 if you can in any way support its mission of feeding the hungry in this area. It is also available if you find yourself in need of assistance or would simply like some information. You can also visit www.StBlaise.org/foodpantry. The pantry is open Wednesdays, 11 am—1 pm.

Residents Vote to Sell Macy School Property at Annual Town Meeting

written by LYNN S. ULSH, Bulletin Reporter The residents present at the Annual Town Meeting on May 25 voted to authorize the Board of Selectmen to sell the 15-acre property where the Clara Macy Elementary School previously stood. The parcel to be sold will exclude the existing playground and ballfield, which will remain a public park. Throughout the past year, the Board of Selectmen, the Planning Department and Town Administrator Denis Fraine held a series of public meetings in order for the neighborhood residents to have a voice in the disposal of the building and land. The majority of the attendees said that they did not want to wait for the demolition of the building until the land was sold because vacant buildings are often targets for vandalism and other illegal activities.

The voters at the October Town Meeting had voted to go forward with the demolition, costing approximately $350,000, the expenditure to be recovered with the sale of the land. The school building was razed in December and January. Bellingham attorney Lee Ambler expressed concern regarding the authorization of the sale before the town got an appraisal of the value of the property. At the first vote the Article did not pass with the needed two-thirds vote. However, Fraine amended the motion to include two appraisals and a stipulation that the land would not be sold for less than the average of those two appraisals. A second amendment had also been added to officially separate out the playground and ball field parcel as part of the Article. The soil test on the land

where the ball field stands showed that area to be not suited for septic system installation so it was not part of the twelve-lot subdivision drawn up on the engineering plans. The second vote on the amended Article passed unanimously. Another Article that passed with some discussion allowed for Bellingham to enter into a municipal aggregation to research electrical generation rates in order for residents to receive lower generation costs. Fraine noted that Bellingham residents will still receive electricity through their current carrier, either National Grid or Eversource. However, he said that most people do not know that they can select the electric generator company listed on the back of their bills, which often have lower rates. The aggregate would allow residents

to join and leave the program at any time and receive the lower generation rate. Fraine noted that a representative would be in Bellingham to explain the program to interested residents. The first few Articles approved the proposed budgets for the various town and school departments, town boards and municipal and school personnel salaries. Capital outlays from the ambulance receipt account were approved to purchase a new ambulance to replace the 2005 vehicle. Other projects approved include a new sound system in the Bellingham High School auditorium since the original system was inadequate, a new equipment testing machine for the Fire Department, new flooring for the DPW building and improvements at the Bellingham Early Childhood Center.

MEADOWLANDS–continued from previous page land in Franklin, Bellingham and Medway back in 1977, and purchased additional acreage in 1983. Earls has been convening monthly meetings since this past spring, under the sponsorship of Metacomet Land Trust, to pool ideas, advocate for increased awareness and access to the area, and help protect and encourage recreational use of the area. Town and state representatives from Bellingham, Franklin and Medway have participated in these meetings. Recently a $25,000 earmark, proposed by state reps Jeffrey Roy (D-Franklin), Kevin Kuros (RUxbridge), and John Fernandes (D-Milford) was included in the 2017 state budget. “This money will help develop a plan to improve access to some beautiful recreational space in the area, and will go a long way toward ensuring the property meets its full potential,” said Roy. “This particular property has sat vastly unused for many years and can provide some additional recreational opportunities in the area. We look forward to working with the Army Corps of Engineers and local officials to open up this natural gem to residents while maintaining its natural beauty.” Earls took Kuros and Roy on a tour of the Army Corps properties last fall, and Kuros was impressed with the potential. “After touring this land with Rep. Roy and Mr. Earls,” said Kuros, “I was convinced that we needed to work to improve access and utilization of this hidden gem that spans our districts.

8 MOMS—continued from previous page was required to raise $25. The PMC pairs up each team with a “pedal partner,” someone who is being treated for cancer. Team “My Pace or Yours” has a pedal partner named Hudson Solder, and when the moms started talking about Hudson, they got serious. Team member Jen Thorell said quietly, “It was a humbling experience, meeting Hudson.” They explained that they had gotten the chance to meet Hudson and his family at a PanMass Challenge “Pedal Partners” event held at Fenway Park. Lisa Hanson smiled and said “When I get tired as I train, I try to think of Hudson,” she said. Heather Kempskie said, “Your legs take you only so far; your heart takes you the rest of the way.” The team has raised nearly all of the $14,000 they need to participate in the PMC. At Bulletin deadline, they were short about $1500. Liz Bell, Bellingham’s

Food Service Director, said, “We want to give a big thanks to everyone who already supported us. We had a fundraiser at Grumpy’s Restaurant. It was so wonderful to see so many people come together to support our efforts. There are so many wonderful causes in town and it’s really touching to see how generous people are.” Lisa Hanson added, “Both the Milford Bike Shop and Landry’s Bike Shop in Norwood have given us 20% discounts on anything we’ve purchased from them. Both shops will be volunteering at the PanMass Challenge.” Cohen concluded, “We’re doing this challenge as a choice. But there are so many people being treated for cancer and they don’t have a choice.” To donate to Team “My Pace or Yours,” please visit http://profile.pmc.org/TY0012.

after roughly 10 years of faithful and dedicated service to his country, Mr. Farese maintained his role as a member of the research and development team at the Watertown Arsenal, where he had worked as a Captain in the Army until his health declined and he became fully disabled. In true Duke fashion he was not able to sit idle for very long after leaving the Watertown Arsenal before he decided to volunteer his time and work at the Paul J. Primavera Jr./Sr. High School, initially teaching students how to repair/rebuild bicycles. One day, however, he was passing by the computer lab and noticed several computers with repair notes on them. He offered to help and that was the day his new program was born. He teaches the at-risk students how to repair computers that are all donated by outside sources so that they could then donate them to other groups and facilities that need technology but have limited resources. In addition to Duke’s dedication to his country, he has had the pleasure of being married to Mrs. Jacquelyn Farese for over 37 years and raising two beautiful children, Bethany, age 35, and U.S. Army Captain Peter Farese, age 32. A classic-car buff, Farese used to restore cars, and at the end of the award ceremony, one of the students proudly presented him with a really nice painting of his favorite car that the student had painted. Farese said that he is honored to receive the award, but that his real reward is seeing the students learn and enjoy their time with him, and he is looking forward to moving into the new Keough building for the 2016-2017 school year.

It turns out the waste company contracts to pick up the needles.” Pete wasn’t sure what to do with the information she had, so like many of us in town, when we don’t know where else to go for help, she sought out Town Administrator Denis Fraine. “Denis took it from there and got it done,” she smiled. Pete was smiling because just recently the town has installed a sharps container right inside the door of the Senior Center on Blackstone Street. And just in time— a statewide ban on the disposal of needles, syringes and lancets "sharps" in household trash took effect on July 1. Fraine said, “We did have a mail-in program for disposing of used needles, but it was a little cumbersome, especially for seniors.” Council on Aging Director Laura DeMattia noted that the town has recently agreed to cover the added cost of having a sharps container installed at the senior center, with pick-up scheduled for every eight weeks. “It’s the same company that picks up the trash for the town,” DeMattia noted. “The container is going to be right next to the guest table where everyone signs in. Bellingham Bulletin BHS at FENWAY— cont. fm. previous pg. School Band was selected from a pool of potential performers and they recorded the National Anthem unaware it would be sent to the Red Sox for approval. Bellingham music staff got final approval on their audition CD on January 4, 2016—a great way to start the new year. Once they’d completed playing the Star Wars® theme at Fenway, the band performed the National Anthem, led by Band Directors Marie Forte and Bonnie Harper. The Bellingham Color Guard, grades 7 through 12, presented the American and Massachusetts State flags on the field that evening, coached by Bev Bajgot and Cindy Maxfield. There were approximately 1,058 group tickets sold to Bellingham community members for this game, and the game itself was a sold-out victory for the Boston Red Sox over the Oakland A’s. “The opportunity to perform at Fenway was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for our music students and staff,” said Forte. “We were honored to work with Mr. Lockhart; he was enthusiastic and warm—a true professional. The entire experience was amazing, from the soundcheck on the field to the full performance. Our students and staff are incredibly fortunate that we were able to perform on center field because it is not normally offered to school groups; it was a last-minute opportunity that was presented to us. We are extremely proud of our students, and thankful to the Bellingham Friends of Music, Bellingham Public Schools and all of the community members who came to support us,” she concluded. To view a video of the Bellingham students’ performance, visit www.BellinghamMusic.org and click on Red Sox Performance, or visit the Bellingham Music Facebook page (facebook.com/ bellinghammusic).
