NYA Girls Make State Tourney Minnesota River Conference co-champion Norwood Young America has again qualified for the Minnesota State High School Class 2A Girls’ Basketball Tournament following a 6756 victory over New RichlandHartland-Ellendale-Geneva in the Section 2 AA championship game Friday night at Minnesota State University Mankato. The unseeded Raiders (26-3) will take on No. 2 seed Sauk Centre (29-1) 6 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Mariucci Arena on the campus of the University of Minnesota. The top seed in the eight-team field is Plainview-Elgin-Millville (28-1), which will take on former MRC member Holy Family Catholic (18-11) in the first round. NYA, which breezed past Le Sueur-Henderson 64-31 and Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 6545 in the first two rounds of the section tournament, outlasted St. Peter 59-56 in two overtimes in the subsection championship. The St. Peter had eliminated Belle Plaine 72-30 in the first round.

Minnesota Deer Hunters Banquet is March 19 The Minnesota River Valley Chapter of the MDHA is having its 33rd annual banquet Saturday, March 19. Social hour starts at 5 p.m. and dinner is at 6:30 p.m. The program starts at 7:30 p.m. Cost for the banquet is $25 for adults and $15 for youth. Three Tigers Named to All-MRC Boys’ Hoops Team, Narveson MVP Minnesota River Conference champion Belle Plaine had three players selected to the 2015-16 All-MRC boys’ basketball team. Included in the trio is Luke Narveson, who was also named the conference’s Most Valuable Player. The other two Tigers selected AllConference were Mitchel Stier and Brody Curtiss. Teammate Branden Schulz was honorable mention. First-year Belle Plaine head coach Paul Fogarty was selected by his peers as Coach of the Year. Jordan and Norwood Young America also had three players named All-Conference, while Le Sueur-Henderson and TriCity United both had two. Mayer Lutheran and Sibley East had one apiece. Narveson, a senior guard/forward, was a very caring leader on the team. The well-being of all players was very important to him. He was always the first to volunteer for food shelf, youth tournaments and all community events. He was also the best overall athlete in the conference and was named the MRC Most Valuable Player by conference coaches. He averaged 22 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals per game. He had 58 assists and 20 blocks. He also led the Tigers in charges taken. Stier, a senior forward, improved all season long. He was a quiet leader who knew when to grab the attention of his team. He had terrific ballhandling skills and became a regular double-double performer in scoring and rebounding. He averaged 15 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. He was second on the team in blocks. Curtiss, a junior point guard, became a leader at his position. His ability as a dual threat to score and pass made it difficult for the opposition. His athleticism allowed him to score inside and made him a terrific rebounder and defender. He was

also available for everything the team asked of him. He averaged 8.5 points per game. He had 70 assists, 85 rebounds and 30 steals on the conference season. Jordan Jimmy Vollbrecht, a 6-8 junior center, averaged 25.3 points per game, including 25.75 points per game in MRC competition. He scored at least 26 points or more in a game against every conference team this season. He also set the school record with 47 points in a game this year. He averaged 11.2 rebounds per game. Eric Tiedman, a sophomore forward, averaged 12.6 points per game, including a high of 31 points. He missed some time to have his appendix removed but came back stronger than ever. He emerged as a defensive stopper for the Hubmen in the second half of the season, frequently drawing assignments to guard the opponent’s leading scorer. Thomas Malz, a senior point guard, averaged 5.6 points per game. He was the primary ball handler and was an important team leader. Norwood Young America Kellen Erpenbach, a junior point guard, is a well-rounded student athlete as indicated by his earning the MSHSL Excel Award. Brice Panning, a senior forward, was a major contributor to the Raiders for four years. Carter Clemensen, a junior guard, is an outstanding student and athlete. His desire to compete is evident in games and practice. His offensive skills are very important to the Raider team, but it is on the defensive end of the court where he truly excels. Le Sueur-Henderson Tyler Eccles, a senior forward, averaged 14.4 points, six rebounds, 1.5 steals and two assists per game. He was the

inside “go to” man all year for the Giants. Even though he often gave up 3-4 inches against his opponent, his quickness and outside touch allowed him to be the team’s leading scorer this season. Ben Barron, a junior guard, averaged 10.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, two steals and two assists per game. He displays great scoring instinct and body control while driving to the rim. Tri-City United Keegan Oak, a senior guard, averaged 11.5 points per game this year. He also led the Titans in assists, steals and averaged three rebounds per game. He was the team’s best three-point shooter, shooting 42 percent from behind the arc. He was the team’s most vocal leader. Carter Rynda, a senior forward, averaged 10.7 points per game this season, 11.16 in conference play. He also led the team in rebounds, averaging seven per game. Mayer Lutheran Logan Dreier, a senior guard, was able to play only one year of varsity due to being a transfer student. But in that year he excelled in his roles as captain, sole senior starting team member and mentor to younger players. He averaged 15 points per game and had a season-high 32 points in one game versus Madelia. Sibley East Gavin Bates, a sophomore guard, averaged 15-plus points in conference play. He was asked to do everything for a very young and extremely inexperienced Wolverine team. He led them in scoring, rebounds and free throw percentage. Honorable Mention Sr. Branden Schulz B.P. 5K Run at Waconia April 2 The second annual “Don’t Worry Be Hoppy” 5K and Kids Run is slated for Saturday, April 2 at Waconia Brewing Company, 255 Main Street W., in Waconia. Part of the proceeds will go to Backyard Wishes, an organization that provides equipment and activities gear for youth in the community. Backyard Wishes has been active since 2010. Registration on race day begins at 7:30 a.m. At 10 a.m., the 5K run/walk will begin followed by the kids’ fun run at 11 a.m. Awards and announcements will be held after completion of the run. The registration fee for adults is $30 before March 19, $35 after March 19. The youth registration fee is $15 before March 15, $20 after March 19. Subsection Triple A Winner

Belle Plaine High School senior Sam Gavin, right, was presented the Section 2AA, North Subsection Triple A (Academic, Arts and Athletics) Award by Belle Plaine School Board Chair Dan Gardner prior to the start of the boys’ basketball subsection championship game Feb. 29 at Minnesota State University Mankato, which is where Gavin also plans to attend next school year. Gavin, a consistent member of the school’s academic honor roll, has been a part of the BPHS band program since he was a ninth-grader. He earned membership in an honors band Get your Wednesdays as a junior. He has also been in the school’s choir program throughout his high school career. off to a good start...
