Deaths

Alice A. Savage, 70, of Arlington and formerly of Belle Plaine passed away Saturday, January 5, 2013 at her residence.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 9 from Our Lady of the Prairie Church in Belle Plaine. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Belle Plaine at a later date. Visitation was from 4–8 p.m. Tuesday, January 8 at the Kolden Funeral Home in Belle Plaine and will continue there from 9-10 a.m. on Wednesday. Lunch will follow the service at the Belle Plaine Vets Club. Alice was born on January 2, 1943 in Sibley County to Gerald and Cathryn (Walsh) Fahey. She was a 1960 graduate of Belle Plaine High School. She married Marlin Savage in 1964. Alice worked at the Mala Strana Health Care Center in New Prague and also at the Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia. After retirement she worked in home health with Golden Homes of New Ulm. Alice loved sewing, specifically knitting and quilting and also enjoyed reading.

Alice is survived by her children, Mary (Steve) Muehlenhardt, Donald, Julie and Brad Savage, grandchildren; Abby and Brandon Muehlenhardt and Tyler Keen-Savage; siblings, Mary (Isaac) Toma and Larry (Bev) Fahey; sisters-in-law, Carol and Lois Fahey; and nieces and nephews. Alice is preceded in death by Marlin Savage; son, David “Tiny” Savage; parents; brothers, Jerry, Frank and Donald Fahey.

Laura Lea is survived by her father, David (Pauline) Maus of New Prague; mother, Jody (Eric) Lehman of Chaska; 10 siblings, Tara Maus (boyfriend, Tony Solomon) of Le Sueur, Kevin Maus of New Prague, Brianna Maus of New Prague, Patrick (Ashlee) Green of Belle Plaine, Andrew Green (fiance, Megan Dueck) of International Falls, Christopher Green of Le Sueur, Cassandra Hinderscheid (fiance, Brad Womble) of Charlotte, NC, Amanda Hinderscheid of Mankato, Michael Hinderscheid of Bloomington and Melanie Hinderscheid of New Prague; grandmothers, Shirley Wellcome of Superior WI, Regina Maus of Henderson and Armella Hinderscheit of New Prague. Serving as casket bearers will be Kevin Maus, Pat Green, Andrew Green, Christopher Green, Michael Hinderscheid and Tony Solomon.

An active and dedicated member of the church, Evelyn spent countless hours tending to her flowers and landscaping her yard. She enjoyed refinishing furniture and boating on Prior Lake. A love of collecting antiques, Evelyn enjoyed hunting for the perfect piece at nearby garage sales. Evelyn enjoyed watching Andrew and Benjamin play basketball and baseball. She was so proud of her grandsons and loved them unconditionally.

Evelyn C. Hunsader, 75, passed away the early evening of Sunday, December 30, 2012 at Augustana Health Care Center in Apple Valley, MN, surrounded by her family the entire day.

The Celebration of Life Service was on Friday at 11:30 a.m., with one hour prior to the service all at Bethesda Church in Prior Lake. Pastor Dwight Anderson presided. Evelyn was laid to rest with her husband at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. On Thursday, November 11, 1937, in Crawfordsville, Indiana, Evelyn Cora was born to the parents Jay L and Grace M. (Mills) Runyan. She was the youngest of six children.Evelyn’s childhood years were spent growing up on a family farm in Woodbine, Iowa. She attended a country school through eighth grade.During high school summer breaks, she traveled to Omaha, Nebraska to be a nanny. In 1955, Evelyn graduated from Woodbine High School, where she was a member of the Future Homemakers of America. Furthering her education at Rochester Methodist Kahler School of Nursing, Evelyn earned a degree as a Registered Nurse. She also had additional training at Cook County Hospital in Chicago in the emergency room. Working for a period of time in Rochester, Evelyn eventually moved to Minneapolis to work at a local hospital. In later years, she took her nursing skills to Mala Strana Health Care Center in New Prague. In the end, Evelyn spent most of her career at Fairview University of Minnesota Hospital, until retiring in 2010.

Introduced through mutual friends, Evelyn met Arthur William “Bill” Hunsader. They courted for a time and on Tuesday, June 28, 1966 in Minnesota, Evelyn married Bill. They were blessed with a beautiful son, Jed. Establishing their roots first in Burnsville, Evelyn and Bill later moved to Prior Lake in 1972. For the next 40 years, she called Prior Lake her home. Paul A. Melchior Paul Arthur Melchior of The Villages Florida, formerly of Belle Plaine and Park Rapids Minnesota, passed away peacefully at home on January 6, 2013. A memorial service for Paul will be held in Belle Plaine this spring with date and time to be shared at a later date.

Paul was born July 2, 1927 to Peter and Clara Melchior in Belle Plaine. He grew up and attended school there where he met his first wife Elverna “Ellie” Schmidt. Paul served in the US Navy after high school then attended St Cloud State University in Minnesota where he earned a teaching degree in 1949.

Paul and Ellie married on June 18, 1949 and they moved west to South Dakota where Paul started his lifelong career in education as a teacher in Native American communities. Paul worked as an educator in many communities in South and North Dakota until 1968 when he accepted the position of Area Director of Education for the US Department of the Interior in Minneapolis where he worked until his retirement in 1979. After Ellie’s death, Paul reconnected with family friend Phyllis Eix of Park Rapids, Minnesota and they were married on May 29, 2002. They decided to abandon the cold Minnesota winters and make Florida their permanent home. Together they enjoyed the wonderful weather, meeting new friends and of course, the golf! Throughout his life, Paul enjoyed many activities with friends and family including travel, fishing, hunting, golfing and casino outings.

Paul is survived by his second wife, Phyllis Eix; children Jerome Melchior, Mary Ann (Chuck) Vermeersch; daughterin-law, Linda Melchior; sonin-law, Robert (Carrie) Elder; grandchildren, Lucas Melchior, Alan (Jaime) Elder, Joe Elder (Lindsey Steege), Will Elder; great-grandson, Charlie Elder; sister-in-law, Gertie Melchior; step children, Lenny Eix, Steve (Lori) Eix, Laurie (Perry) Melbo, Sharon (Don) Adams; step grandchildren, Carrie Eix, Kimberly Eix, EJ Eix, Jed Eix, Joseph Eix, Corey Melbo, Leah (Levi) Branstrom, Kelly Urbano, Kathryn Urbano, John Urbano, Jocelyn Adams, Caleb Adams, Parker Adams; step great-grandchildren, Carter and Conner Branstrom; and many nieces and nephews. Paul is preceded in death by his first wife, Ellie; son, Mark; daughter, Paula (Melchior) Elder; and step grandson, Gabriel Adams.
