New Owners Ralph and Sally French, pictured above, became owners of Belle Plaine’s shoe sales and repair store in 1986. Harriet and Earl Gerdes were getting out of the business after operating the Gerdes Show Store in Belle Plaine for the past 20 years. “I enjoyed working with the people, so I’ll be missing that the most,â€? Harriet Gerdes said. In a move aimed at curbing teenage vandalism, burglaries and exhibition driving by minors, the Belle Plaine Police Department announced it would strictly enforce the city’s curfew ordinance. Police Chief Steve Rost said he was directed by the city’s Public Safety Committee “to get tougher on violations.â€? The curfew ordinance stated that minors under age 12 could not be out and about in town after 9 p.m., and minors under age 15, they had until 10:30 p.m. Both curfews remained in effect until 5 a.m. It was a long time coming, but the Belle Plaine area ďŹ nally got some moisture that past week. After about a month of little or no rain, the faucet was turned on and kept on owing most of the week. Belle Plaine High School baseball player Joe Edberg was named to the 1986 all-conference baseball team. Teammate Jeff Bruder was honorable mention. The Belle Plaine town baseball Tigers knocked off two ďŹ ne teams that week, beating Plato 12-8 and Chaska 3-2. In the Chaska game, Jeff Fogarty won a pitcher’s duel against former Tiger Terry Knop.
