Deaths

Carol A. Bigaouette Emil Ashauer Emil Ashauer, 102, a resident of Kingsway Retirement Living in Belle Plaine, passed away on January 5, 2016. Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 9 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Belle Plaine. Rev. John Meyer officiated. Visitation was one hour prior to the service at church on Saturday morning. Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery in Belle Plaine. Emil was born June 5, 1913 in Lidgerwood, North Dakota to Herman and Marie (Krieger) Ashauer. They moved to Minnesota when Emil was young. Emil had three brothers and two sisters. He graduated from Belle Plaine High School in 1931 as class salutatorian and learned the plumbing trade during and after his high school years. After a tour of duty with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers in the South Pacific and New Guinea during WWII, he returned to Belle Plaine where he started Emil’s Plumbery. He retired in 1975 and enjoyed traveling, socializing, golfing, gardening and many other activities. After retirement he wintered in McAllen, Texas, driving back and forth from Belle Plaine until well into his 90’s. Emil was an active participant in the life of the community. He was an associate member of the Commercial Club, a charter member of the development corporation, the historical society and the Rotary Club. In his early years he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in Belle Plaine’s first Boy Scout troop. He is survived by his second wife, Viola Dahlke of Belle Plaine; sister, Elsie Stueber of Albuquerque, New Mexico; step-children, Robert Dahlke of Belle Plaine, Janice (Dick) Schense of Belle Plaine, Fern Dahlke (Joe Tessmer) of Atlanta, Georgia; as well as nieces and nephews; step-grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren. Emil is preceded in death by his first wife, Faith Simon, who passed away in 1988.

Carol A. Bigaouette, 83, of Belle Plaine, passed away on Thursday, January 7, 2016, at The Lutheran Home in Belle Plaine. We will celebrate her life at a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., Thursday, January 14 at St. John’s Catholic Church, 26523 200th St. in Belle Plaine. Visitation will be one hour prior to service at church. Please join us after Mass for a luncheon. Interment will be in Assumption Catholic Cemetery at a later date. Carol was born June 14, 1932, to Carl and Marie (Kaiser) Lambrecht of Jordan, MN. where she grew up and graduated from Jordan High School in 1950. On September 15, 1951, she married the love of her life, Larry Bigaouette, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Jordan. She was the perfect farm wife. When she wasn’t in the garden or out in the fields, she could be found in the kitchen cooking or canning. Carol was a devoted mother to Rick, David, and Debra. She was an amazing seamstress, and some of her best creations were the dance outfits she made for their dance competitions. Years later, they gave up their dancing shoes for Button Boxes. They formed a band called the Button Box 3 and entertained around the area and in Mesa, AZ, where they wintered for over 20 years. Carol is now reunited with her husband Larry; her son, David, parents; and brothers. She will be missed by her son, Rick (Julie) Bigaouette of Prior Lake; her daughter, Debra (Tom Smiley) Murphy of Red Wing; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; sister, Doris Peterson of White Bear Lake; and brother, Chuck (Mary Ann) Lambrecht of El Cajon, CA; and the many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. koldenfuneralhome.com

Leonard J. Fogarty Leonard Jerome Fogarty, 87, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on January 12, 2016. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, January 14 and also from 12-1 p.m. on Friday, January 15 at Our Lady of the Prairie Catholic Church in Belle Plaine. Celebration of his life Mass will follow at 1 p.m. Father Roger Hessian and Father Brian Lynch will concelebrate. There will be a private interment at Sacred Heart Cemetery. He was born to Michael J and Elizabeth Fogarty. He was the youngest of 12 children. Len attended District 53 Country School and graduated from Belle Plaine High School in 1946. He served in the Army for 21 months, at which time he returned home to farm. On June 22, 1957 he married Pat Gaffney at Sacred Heart Church. They were blessed with five daughters, Kim (Neal) Newman of Red Wing, Sheila (Dave) Herrmann of Belle Plaine, Maureen (Bill) Daehn of Brooklyn Park, JoAnn (Bob) Malz of Jordan and Jill (Jeff) Cavanaugh of Manitowoc, WI. He was the very proud grandfather of 12 grandchildren. In 1964 he became an employee at the Belle Plaine Post Office as a letter carrier. After 27 years he retired on January 31, 1992. Len was an active Knights of Columbus member. He served as Grand Knight for two years and treasurer for 18 years. He was an active volunteer at Our Lady of the Prairie Catholic Church as a Minister of Eucharist. He also volunteered for Meals on Wheels for many years. Len was a cherished husband, father, grandfather and loved by many. Len is preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Beth, Mary, Brigid, Sarah; and brothers, Michael, Thomas, Joseph, John, Patrick, Leo and David. Gary L. Bandel Gary Lee Bandel, 68, of Belle Plaine, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2016 surrounded by his family. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at Our Lady of the Prairie Catholic Church in Belle Plaine. Fr. Brian Lynch will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to Mass at the Church. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Belle Plaine. Gary was born in Rochester MN on June 16, 1947. Gary was kind and gentle, and enjoyed people, both old friends and new. He was proud to have served his country in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged with a Purple Heart, among other medals. Gary worked for many years in the auto-body industry. He enjoyed classic car shows and rebuilding his own cars. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. Gary and Carolyn loved to travel. This past fall they had completed the final leg of their exploration of the Oregon Trail. They enjoyed their vacations in Florida. The love of Gary’s life the past few years were his grandchildren, Charlotte and Calvin. They have brought hours of joy to their grandparents. He was a loving brother, husband, father and grandfather. Gary will be deeply missed by his wife, Carolyn (Morrisette) Bandel; mother, Ida Bandel; son, Gary Lee Bandel; daughter-in-law, Melissa (Thuening) Bandel; grandchildren, Charlotte and Calvin Bandel; brothers; sisters; nieces and nephews. Gary is preceded in death by his father, Newton Bandel; and brother, Ron Bandel.
