Thirty Years Ago This Week

City Softball Champs The Lutheran Home women’s softball team took first place in the 1984 Belle Plaine Softball Association playoffs. The start of the 1984-85 school year was just five days away and latest estimates were calling for 860 students on the first day of classes in the public school system, about the same as the previous year. There would be two new faculty members. Connie Bergs would be the new speech clinician, replacing Maureen Kahonen, who was on extended leave after moving to Finland, her husband’s home country. The other new teacher would be Deanna Konkol, who would be teaching Mrs. Barron’s junior high science class. Mrs. Barron was on maternity leave. Our Lady of the Prairie Catholic School was expecting an enrollment of 84, four more than the previous year. Enrollment at Trinity Lutheran School was expected to see a substantial decline in students, from 92 students to 78. The Belle Plaine School Board had been considering asking voters to approve a $100,000 school referendum that fall but decided at its meeting that Monday night not to hold the referendum that year. Superintendent Dr. John Bartholow stated: “We came up with a better (fund) balance than we thought.� Belle Plaine public schools had their highest enrollment a few years previous (1,111) but was currently at 860. Prairie Plastics of Belle Plaine was manufacturing a product that was sure to excite fishermen everywhere. The product was the first artificial fishing lure to be made from fish and fish byproducts. It even smelled and tasted like real fish. The lures were available at K-Mart, Target and fish specialty stores and bait shops nationwide. The Scott County Board unanimously approved a written policy forbidding sexual harassment in the workplace. It would take effect Sept. 1. Carl Hennen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ron Hennen, was one of 156 young men from throughout the state who participated in the 1984 Mr. Minnesota Teen Program in Morris. The program, in its 50th year, selected individuals based on

their service and achievements in school and their community. Carl was sponsored in the program by the State Bank of Belle Plaine, Belle Plaine Herald and Hennen Jewelry. Mr. and Mrs. Dan Murphy returned from Germany where they visited their daughter, Sheila, who was stationed at Augsburg with the United States Air Force. John A. Mueller, 95, died on Aug. 20 at the Belle Plaine Lutheran Home. He was born on July 17, 1889 in Le Sueur County to Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Mueller. He married Marie Winterfeldt, who preceded him in death. Mueller farmed in Tyrone Township and in Le Sueur County and moved to Belle Plaine in 1973. Funeral services were held at Trinity Evangelical Church Lutheran Church in Belle Plaine. Practice for the 1984 high school football season started that Monday. The Tigers had 57 boys trying out for the team. The returning lettermen were all seniors – Paul Jeffrey, Phil Hennen, Rick Murphy, Tim Traxler, Troy Martin, Greg Schmit, Mori Oestriech, Scott Bergs and Steve Smith. The Tigers’ new coaching staff consisted of head coach Dale Pudlitzke and assistants Jeff Hiltz, Lee Sauter, Daryl Goulson and Bob Brown. The tennis team would play BPHS’s first scheduled athletic event of 1984-85 when they would travel to Prior Lake Aug. 24 to open the season. Members of the team, which was coached by Dan Dressen, were seniors Sara Malin and Carrie Palmer; juniors Courtney Hoelz, Molly Daly and Jill Fogarty; sophomores Sara Miller, Sally Halbmaier, Theresa Wynne and Shelly Meger; and freshmen Dawn Jacobson, Kathy Rogers, Kim Bergs, Julie Schwartz, Michelle Seaver, Shannon Morrision and Lisa Mellgren. The Belle Plaine Police Department held its first ever invitational golf tournament. Brad Krick and his nephew Mark Heglund of Apple Valley won first place in the two-man best ball tournament with a 73.

60 Years Ago (1954)

Gene O’Brien, catcher and manager of the Belle Plaine Tigers town baseball team for eight years, announced his retirement from baseball. He had guided Belle Plaine through its most prosperous and colorful years. Under O’Brien’s heady managing, Belle Plaine won four pennants and tied for a fifth and also took second place at the state baseball tournament twice. In those years attendance at the local park sometimes topped the thousand mark. Belle Plaine schools would open on Sept. 7 with 11 new teachers. Emily Helget, Beverly Nagel and Gerald, Kenneth and Elmer Nagel returned home after a six-day trip through the Dakotas, Montana and Canada. Mrs. Sophia Schwarskoph, 56, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gottfried Eggers of Carver County, died at the family home in Benton Township after an illness of six years. Funeral services were held at Zion Lutheran Church of Benton. Mary Flannery, well-known Assumption resident, died at the Glencoe hospital, where she had been a patient for five months. Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Kessler, Glenn and Dale, arrived home after a trip to the south that took them as far as Cuba. Mr. and Mrs. John F. Newell held an open house to commemorate their silver wedding anniversary. A christening party was held in honor of Kevin Leonard Meger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Meger of New Market. Mr. and Mrs. Peter Melchior, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Peter Germsheid and daughter Karen of Le Center, returned after a trip through South Dakota and Iowa. Le Sueur topped Jordan 9-3 to even the MRL championship best of five series at a game apiece. The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Casserly, nee Dorothy Townsend, of Minneapolis, born prematurely at St. Barnabus Hospital Aug. 21, died Aug. 23. Interment was in St. Mary’s Cemetery in that city. A total of 317 tickets were sold for a wrestling match staged in front of the Belle Plaine grandstand held in order to benefit the polio fund. Proceeds above expenses totaled $110. Four teenage boys were arrested and fined for damage done after driving their car into a farmer’s cornfield. Funeral services were held for Peter Buesgens at St. Peter and Paul’s Church. Interment was in the parish cemetery. With the departure of Ronald Hennen for military service, his

120 Years Ago (1894)

On account of the smallpox scare, about all of the town’s residents were getting vaccinated. The Louis Haas and Conrad Haas families made their drive by team from Howard Lake to visit their folks in Blakeley. S.W. Ingersoll, St. Paul pioneer, died in the South at the age of 82. At one time he owned nearly all the townsite of Belle Plaine when he took it off the hands of the Belle Plaine Company after the panic of 1857. Hundreds of Belle Plaine lots were still in his name when he died. Sixty-seven voters turned out for the Democratic caucus in the borough, there being contests on for the chance to be delegate to the county convention. Those who won included W.H. Weibeler, F.C. Irwin, H.B. Conlon, Jacob Schmitt, Ed Barett, John O’Connor, M. Kelleher and Nic Walerius.
