Hospice & Community Care’s Women’s Giving Circle Marks 10 Years

The Women’s Giving Circle Impacting Hospice Patients and Families for 10 Years

argaret Mead, an American cultural anthropologist (1910-1978), who coincidentally was raised in Doylestown, PA, was quoted as saying, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed it’s the only thing that ever has.”

Hospice & Community Care’s Women’s Giving Circle is the very embodiment of this conviction.

a program created by the St. Alphonsus Healthcare Foundation in Boise, Idaho, which she became aware of at an Association for Healthcare Philanthropy conference several years ago.

“As I learned the concept of giving circles, I recognized that this was a program in which Hospice could engage its constituents and have great success,” she says. “In 2003, we gathered 25 women who were involved with Hospice and shared the concept with them. A small group came forward who ultimately formed the foundation and Steering Committee for Hospice’s Women’s Giving Circle.”

The group, dedicated to effectively investing in programs and services of Hospice, has grown from 24 members in 2004 to 78 members in 2014. In generously leveraging their charitable

dollars, these women are making a difference and impacting lives.

“These funds enrich the lives of Hospice patients and families and the entire community,” says Ginjr Robinson, Special Gifts Manager, “through educational programs, caregiver support, grief camps and conferences, family support materials, music therapy, pediatric hospice support and so much more. The Women’s giving Circle truly touches every service area.”

Any woman, of any age, is encouraged to become a member of the Women’s Giving Circle. Each member makes an annual contribution of $500; these contributions are pooled and awarded as grants to support Hospice programs and services. In 2013, the membership contributed $39,000 to fund 16 programs.

Supporting Pediatric Care The Women’s Giving Circle has been a long-time supporter of pediatricrelated hospice programs, to provide vital comfort and support for pediatric patients and their families during an emotionally-challenging time. This initiative began in 2004, as a result of the very first grant of $12,000 made by the Circle for Hospice to present a Pediatric Palliative Care Conference for members of the medical community.

Since then, the Circle has funded furnishings and equipment for pediatric patients in the Hospice Inpatient Center. Funding also provided “Brave Kid Kits,” for both seriously ill children and their families. These Kits include capes for these very brave children, as well as a disposable camera, Memory Box and “Record-A-Books,” all tools to

create special memories to assist in the grieving process.

The Women’s Giving Circle has three meetings each year, with attendance optional. Each year in September, Hospice & Community Care staff present proposals to the membership for funding consideration. At the Annual Meeting in November, members vote on which projects to fund for the upcoming year.

Thanks to the Women’s Giving Circle, Hospice & Community Care’s Pathways Center for Grief & Loss has received more than $42,000 in grant funding.

“Because of the Women’s Giving Circle, we can offer the bereaved community a quality lending library,” says Patti Anewalt, Director of the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss.

“Funding has also enabled us to expand our bereavement camps, send counselors to national conferences

and hold two large community educational programs, benefitting both community professionals and our staff. It is their support that has helped the Pathways Center provide high quality grief education and support to the community for children, teens and adults coping with serious illness and death.”

Patient care has also been impacted by program support from the Women’s Giving Circle.

“The Women’s Giving Circle enhances the work we do, because the grants provide opportunities for staff to improve their skills through educational programs and conferences,”

says Valerie Peifer, Vice President, Patient Care. “The generosity of the Women’s Giving Circle provides compassionate support to patients and families, by funding programs and tools that add meaning and positive memories during final weeks and months, including complementary therapies like music and massage and We Honor Vets recognition ceremonies.”

Programs Made Possible by the Women’s Giving Circle For 10 years, the Women’s Giving Circle has touched the lives of Hospice & Community Care patients, their families and the community in so many ways, including making the following programs possible: ✦ Needy Hospice families were supplied with gift cards to help provide medications, daily supplies and groceries. ✦ Medisets, organizing a week’s supply of medications, were supplied to Hospice families to safely control medications and dosages. ✦ American flags, military pins, certificates and lap robes assist Hospice, as a We Honor Veterans Partner, to thank and officially recognize Veterans in our care. ✦ The Pathways Center for Grief & Loss purchased new books, DVDs and Kids Kit supplies for the lending library, to support bereaved children and families. ✦ Read-Aloud books for memory-challenged adult patients provide a special way for volunteers to respectfully connect with these patients. ✦ A seminar providing information on hospice and spiritual care at end of life was provided in Spanish along with Hospice informational materials written in Spanish. ✦ Dementia-support training and tools were provided to allow Hospice to assist individuals confronted with a dementia diagnosis and their families.

Investing with Vision:

Funding to Elicit Change

hey were looking for a way to be “transformational.” Through the personal experience of friends served by Hospice, Tom and Gina Russo say they came to understand the importance and warmth of the whole process of hospice care.

“Our friends shared with us the blessings they had received through Hospice,” shares Tom, “and the respect they felt for the care Hospice provided.”

Motivated by this experience, Tom and Gina became dedicated supporters of Hospice. In 2012, upon learning of a need for increased awareness of Hospice services among members of the Latino community, the Russos, through the Thomas A. & Georgina T. Russo Family Foundation, made a three-year pledge to fund a new bilingual bereavement counselor position at Hospice & Community Care’s Pathways Center for Grief & Loss.

“We wanted to focus on the underserved community and the needs of children,” says Gina. “We knew Hospice and the Pathways Center had great services to give, but there were so many who didn’t have access to this support.”

“Coincidentally, the very week we were meeting with the Russos regarding the bilingual bereavement counselor need, a request came from King Elementary, a Lancaster City school, to help the school counselors offer a children’s grief support group at the school,” says Dr. Patti Anewalt, Director of the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss.

the trainer’ model and brought its Coping Kids & Teens program to King Elementary School.”

Hospice brought Deborah Gonzalez, MSW, on staff in October 2012.

Deborah was born in New York City and later moved with her family to Puerto Rico, where Deborah obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from the Universidad Interamericana of Puerto Rico.

“This one person has already had such an effect,” says Gina.

This, they say, is the goal of the Thomas A. & Georgina T. Russo Family Foundation.

“We like to fund visionary projects with an investment that has multiple results,” says Tom. “We like to find needs that have been previously unmet and to help make changes happen.”

“Hospice has a good reputation and we are aware of the respect this organization has in the community,” says Gina.

“Everything is done on a professional level and we have great faith and trust in the administration team.”

In funding projects that are “off grid and off budget,” the Russos say they envision the role of the Russo Foundation to enable projects that can become something proven, something that is then embraced as vital, with the result being that the visionary project becomes “regular business,” and becomes part of the future planned budget. The Foundation funded the three-year bilingual bereavement counselor position with the understanding that Hospice & Community Care would then retain and budget for the position at the conclusion of the funding.

The impact of this funding has already had widespread impact. The number of Latino individuals served through the Pathways Center has nearly doubled, from 72 people to 138. Deborah tries to meet with the family of every Latino patient receiving Hospice care, to provide support and to establish a relationship that is valuable when the time may arise for bereavement support. She is also available each

month onsite at the Spanish American Civic Association (SACA) in Lancaster, to meet with members of the Latino community.

The Pathways Center is producing a quarterly bereavement newsletter in Spanish and Deborah is also a regular editorial contributor on information about the grief process and bilingual support through the Pathways Center for El Palo, a bilingual publication serving eastern Pennsylvania.

“The impact this gift has had is actually three-fold,” explains Dr. Anewalt.

“Internally, bringing on Deb has helped our entire staff learn so much more about the Latino culture. She has also been extremely helpful in helping us translate many of our materials we provide for families. Deb has played an important role in educating Spanish pastors and laypersons through two highly successful seminars provided by the Pathways Center in 2013. Deb and I have presented sessions for two national conferences, including for the National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization, about the culture, values and beliefs of Latinos coping with serious illness, loss and grief.”

The desire to help fund change can be contagious, but Tom worries that, until personally touched by Hospice, many do not fully understand the impact Hospice can have.

“So many people are talking about and sharing their good experiences at Hospice,” says Tom. “Hospice is there and ready to provide that support for others.”

Camp Buddy?

‘he Pathways Center for Grief & Loss offers Camp Chimaqua, a weekend, overnight camp for children ages 6-12 who are grieving the loss of loved one.

Could you serve as a volunteer “buddy” to a camper? Camp Chimaqua, held June 6-8 at Camp Donegal in York County, is staffed by professional Pathways Center counselors and specially-trained adult buddies. Each buddy is paired with a child to provide constant companionship, support and supervision. The focus of Camp Chimaqua is to help children learn about loss and develop coping skills through fun-filled activities and group sharing.

As one of only six organizations in Pennsylvania to attain Level 4, Hospice is recognizing the unique needs of Veterans who are facing illness and helping guide America’s Veterans and their families with quality end-of-life care. Hospice has implemented a Veteran-to-Veteran

Volunteer program, partnering specially-trained Hospice volunteers who are Veterans with Veteran patients in our care, and participates in Veteran Pinning Ceremonies in conjunction with area senior care communities recognizing Veterans for their service.

News & Notes Success at Wine, Dine & Unwind

T

he beautiful Terrace Room at Heritage Hills Golf Resort served as the elegant venue for Hospice & Community Care’s first inaugural Wine, Dine & Unwind fundraising event in York in October, 2013.

More than $24,000 was raised during an evening with good food and good friends, wine DINE & and beer pairings, music by Fellow Travelers, Unwind and exciting live and silent auctions. Our wonderful guest emcee Brian Roche, of WGAL TV, did an amazing job, and professional chef and reality TV star Barbie Marshall shared her personal story of how she and her family benefitted from the support they received from the Pathways Center. Our thanks to everyone who participated! e enter a new year with the gratifying knowledge that in 2013, Hospice & Community Care had the privilege of providing hospice and palliative care for more than 3,000 patients and families—more than ever before.

Our Mission Hospice & Community Care is dedicated to providing care and comfort to help patients and families live better at end of life.

Our Vision

In addition, Hospice cared for more than 1,600 patients through our Palliative Medicine Consultants and, through the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss, provided bereavement support for more than 8,000 adults, teens and children. These numbers also reflect a highter number of patients and families who were supported by Hospice than ever before. We are honored to serve all in need of our care.

In 2014, we will remain commited to providing the vital comfort, care and support needed by those in our community, while again working within the growing parameters and constraints of federal regulations.

The unwavering commitment of our many supporters enables Hospice & Community Care to focus on our patients and their families amid these challenges.
