This course is designed to develop your practical studio experience and identity through a range of ideas, techniques, languages and media within fine art; focusing on building both specialist and multi-disciplinary skills. As well as introducing you to a range of contemporary art, artists and theory, you will build a creative portfolio that can be used to develop exhibition opportunities, help you to gain work or move on to further study.

Areas of study During this course you will study the following compulsory units: contextual and cultural referencing; ideas generation; professional practice; project design and implementation; visual communication In addition, you will also study a selection from a range of specialist units, including: digital image creation and development; drawing; painting; printmaking; sculpture; site specific artwork.

Staff expertise Our staff hold Masters degrees in Fine Art and maintain their studio work, regularly exhibiting as professional artists.

Industry links We have a vibrant programme of guest lecturers throughout the year to enrich your learning. Just some of our recent speakers include artists Paul Pibworth, Ed Burnett and Alex Chinneck, and designer Max McMurdo. You will also have the opportunity to be involved in Bedford Creative Arts projects and visit relevant exhibitions during your course.

Future options On successful completion of the HNC you can progress on to further study with our HND or choose to enter employment. On successful completion of the HND you will have the option to topup the qualification to a full Bachelor’s degree at university or enter employment.

Entry requirements • 32-48 UCAS points with some art, design and media element OR • Art & Design BTEC Level 3 Diploma OR • Art & Design Foundation Diploma (Pre-Degree) OR • Equivalent Level 3 qualification Entry is subject to a successful interview, where you will be asked to bring along a portfolio of your existing work. Applicants from A-Level courses displaying high levels of creativity will also be considered. We welcome applications from mature students who will be considered individually on experience rather than qualifications.

Assessment methods As part of this course you will work with a range of specialist lecturers (including practising artists and designers) in well-equipped studios and workshops. Project briefs will be set for each assignment, and assessment is continuous throughout the course.
