I ndustry News Pevonia shortlisted in the 2017 freeform skincare awards

CN D A/W design col la bs showcased

RYAN LO

CND, pioneers of nail artistry at Fashion Week, teamed up with eccentric London-based designer, Ryan LO, (with one of his creations pictured above) to create two detailed nail styles for his Fall/Winter 2017 runway. The collection combined street style with Japanese teen fashions to create a dramatic and unique juxtaposition. Custom nail styles embodied the ‘Street Chic’ theme, showcasing sophistication with an urban kick. “The transitional theme of the collection dared us to unite two contrasting styles, classic femininity and urban edge,” said Jan Arnold, CND Co-Founder & Style Director. “Pushing the boundaries of fashion, these looks introduced a new generation of style, with the show’s youthful Japanese teenager transforming into a mature fashion innovator.”

EMILIO PUCCI

At Fashion Fashion Week, CND teamed up with renowned Italian fashion label, Emilio Pucci, to design bold nail styles for the Fall/Winter 2017 show. The impressive collaboration resulted in what can only be described as an explosion of colour on the runway. “This was Italy and high fashion at its finest,” said Jan Arnold. “From the clothing right down to the nails, www.salonmagazine.ie

the designs were luxurious, beautiful and wildly fun…and our new friends at Pucci were the loveliest and most collaborative partners. Our inaugural show together was an amazing success, and I can’t wait to see what else is in store for this relationship!” “It was such an honour to connect CND with the Pucci team this season,” said Marian Newman. “These two brands are so harmonious – they’re both amazingly talented and super creative. I just knew it would be a match made in fashion heaven!” VIVIENNE WESTWOOD CND also partnered with key CND Artist, Marian Newman to dress the nails for the Vivienne Westwood Autumn/Winter ‘17/’18 UNISEX show at London Fashion Week Men. The collaboration resulted in an inspiring moment for all. The collection, entitled ‘Ecotricity’ encouraged people to make the switch to renewable energy sources. Vivienne Westwood explains of her designs: “It’s skilled, labour intensive, rather artisan; through our cutting principles, we mass produce clothes that look couture. Women and men are having fun with Unisex and swapping clothes. ‘Buy less, choose well, make it last’ limits the exploitation of the planet’s natural resources.” Go to: www.sweetsquared.com

Pevonia is thrilled to have two of their natural beauty products shortlisted in the FreeFrom Skincare Awards 2017. The multi awardwinning De-Ageing Saltmousse – Papaya and Pineapple, nominated in the Body Care (‘Wash Off’) category, and the Collagen Boost Face Balm in the Men’s Grooming Category. Now in its 6th year, the FreeFrom Skincare Awards have become the go-to awards for natural and organic brands who are committed to the ‘free-from’ cause. Almost 200 products from more than 100 brands have made the shortlist, which emphasises the competition of these prestigious awards. Go to: www.pevonia.co.uk

Phorest announces winners of the 2017 cl ient experience award Phorest Salon Software is excited to announce the winners of this year’s ‘Phorest Client Experience Awards’. The winners of these prestigious awards make up just 5% of the Salon Industry in UK and Ireland. Phorest is the number 1 provider of software to over 3,000 salons in the UK, Ireland, and Finland and has recently launched in the US. Back in 2015, Phorest created the Client Experience Award as a tangible display of the consistent dedication required by salons to provide their clients with a five-star experience. This is a massive achievement for recipients of the award as the criteria is quite particular: to win an award the salon’s average client rating must have stayed at over 4 out of 5for the past 12 months. CEO of Phorest, Ronan Perceval commended all winners of this year’s award - “On behalf of the team at Phorest, we would like to congratulate all the winners for your continued quality of work - these awards are a testament to the high standards set out by you and your team”. Europe’s Leading Hairdressing Trade Fair gears up for the Future. To be perfectly geared up for the future Europe’s leading fair for the hairdressing trade is positioning itself anew. In addition to the move into Halls 4, 5 and 6 and an entirely new logo the new name also aims to inject a breath of fresh air into the event. Running on the second weekend of March 2018 the event will be known as TOP HAIR Düsseldorf – DIE MESSE.

“After a total of 13 events the time had come for some changes. The halls housing the event until now had simply become too small for the over 35,000 visitors. From spring 2018 we will have three halls at our disposal that will make for an exceptional setting. By using Halls 4, 5 and 6 we can offer our customers even more space, greater comfort and better quality service,” commented Michael Degen, Executive Director at Messe Düsseldorf, pictured above. Industry Voices | 25

I ndustry Voices We chat to Claire Kenny from Sunaura about the fabulous Mila d’Opiz brand

therapist who is passionate about effective skincare and wants a flexible brand that can be adapted to the individual client’s needs on any given day. It’s also really well-suited to salons that have a lot of bridal customers, and there are great products for anti-ageing and for sensitive skin. There are retail and professional products to suit all price ranges, from €30-€300, and the range includes peels, body treatments, glycolic acid, make-up, as well as professional and retail products for all skin types and conditions.

I understand that Mila d’Opiz was a pioneer in the 1930s cosmetics industry. How did it start and what happened next? Mila Opitz was married to a manufacturing chemist. She recognised the need for effective skincare products and together they developed a pioneering hormonal cream, which was so popular that they expanded to six more creams and the brand was born! Over the years, the brand has gradually developed and expanded to over 350 products and is sold across all 5 continents. Strong research and development was the foundation of the brand then and it’s still the case now. Mila d’Opiz has pioneered many active ingredients years before they become buzzwords in the industry – one of the first brands to use ATP, Matrixyl, Syn-Ake, Argireline, for example, in some cases 10 years before they became mainstream.

So the USP of the brand is its innovative ingredients and formulations? Absolutely! They attend all the global ingredient trade fairs and develop their own special complexes from the very latest scientific technology available worldwide. In the last 5 years they have entered and won several global cosmetics competitions including a win at the international “Beauty Oscars” (it’s really a thing!) for “Most innovative product” with the Skin Whisperer Cream. This month, we are launching the award-winning Phyto DS Forbidden Serum, which is another world-first! Mila d’Opiz is currently leading the world in cosmetic use of plant stem

cell technology, which is one of the most effective ways to improve skin cells at a deeper level for longer-lasting results. The brand is still owned independently by the same family who founded it, and they take pride in ensuring the quality and science of the brand remain exceptional.

It seems to be a very science-led, results-driven brand. What marketing initiatives are underway to increase brand visibility? Mila d’Opiz consistently re-invests its profits into product research and development, unlike many brands that spend more on marketing than research. However, the brand is changing with the times. These days, the packaging reflects the quality of the products, with modern bright colours that look great on the shelf. The brand image now matches its quality, making it ideal for high-end salons and spas. We have just launched our own Mila d’Opiz website for UK and Ireland and our own Mila d’Opiz social media. Our very own in-house social media and graphics team produce a lot of attractive and quite different images, so our Instagram account is great to follow if you want some inspiration. Now that the website is available, we are in a better position to market the brand effectively. So we are actively seeking new partner salons and spas who want a brand that really works, as well as bloggers who would like to try the brand and review it for us.

So you’re looking for more salons and spas? What can the brand offer them? It’s an ideal brand for the kind of

At higher price-points, salons and spas can offer the more exclusive Skin Whisperer and Phyto De Luxe treatments and products, with plant stem cell technology. We also have a wide range of very effective products at lower price points. We provide free training, samples, brochures and posters for our customers, and plenty of great promotional material.

What should therapists do if they are interested in more information? Contact Sunaura Distribution Ltd for more information or to book a product demonstration. Also, check out our social media and our new website (and check back often as we’ll be continually updating them and adding more content!). We’ll also be at the Professional Beauty Show in September, so everyone is welcome to come over and see the products.

Did you ma ke a connection at this year’s Spa Life I nternationa l conference? Following in the footsteps of its successful UK based sister event, the first Spa Life Ireland took place at the Osprey Hotel and Spa at the end of last month. More than 130 delegates from 27 spas and 22 suppliers met for the event, which took place in Naas, County Kildare.

Spa Life Ireland offers a unique blend of one-to-one speed dates, educational seminars andnetworking opportunities. Speakers included the keynote, Frank Dick OBE, the Irish ‘Tweeting Goddess’ Samantha Kelly and Shauna O’Halloran, editor of Irish Tatler.

M UA Showcase Amy O'Melia

Amy’s Got It! With over 50,000 social media fans, Amy O’Melia’s down-to-earth and practical beauty and lifestyle blogging has attracted a wide audience of avid followers. However, unlike some bloggers out there, she’s a trained make-up artist. Amy says: “I started out by training with VanityX in 2011. My passions as a makeup artist are to stay on-trend, be inspired by others and also give them credit for their work. Be creative, I believe if you choose a job you love you'll never work a day on your life. I began the blog in 2015, after I started giving mini tip / tricks and reviews on Facebook and things grew from there. Blogging is my downtime in the evenings, where I go into a ‘bubble of beauty’. My outlook on the importance of training as a www.salonmagazine.ie

makeup artist is that, essentially, it will teach you all the techniques involved in getting the perfect make-up application. It’s instrumental in choosing the correct skin type, face shapes and the correct product for the application, that’s what some ‘lay’ people don’t realise. Definitely, the most important aspects of makeup artistry for me are sanitisation, decanting of products and contraindications to a makeup application. I constantly upskill and do one-to-one lessons and workshops to keep my knowledge up-to-date and fresh.” Go to: www.shapesandshadows.ie Photography: Lee Furlong

Question Time

with the Maestro Ever wonder what it takes to work as a busy MUA in a tough industry? Then you need to listen to what celeb makeup artist Ken Boylan (doubling as this issue’s agony aunt) has to say! I am a qualified and working MUA for the last three years. I still haven't managed to get the BIG break yet. Is there anything I should or could be doing to raise my profile and get noticed more to bigger employers? When I started in this industry I was one of three male makeup artists in Ireland! This was before Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. It’s a much harder road to get to the top of the tree now there are so many MUAs out there! But the one thing that is most important is your talent; it is so important to know what you are doing, to know about all the different types of makeup styles there are out there. I know that Instagram and YouTube have fab make over’s and you see bloggers doing makeup tutorials and they look lovely but that is just one type of makeup. If you did that sort of makeup on a shoot say for IMAGE magazine or Vogue they would look at you boot you out and get someone who can do the job. Makeup styles are very disordered: there are editorial looks, brides, makeup for going out and day makeup and of course makeup on older people. The Inglot look is fine on a 20 year-old but put it on your gran...well that’s a different story. The best way to get yourself noticed nowadays is the have a really good Instagram page so the general public will start seeing your skill, but go easy on filters! If I see tons of filters on a makeup look I will just ignore them. Assisting well known makeup artists is a really great way to learn how to shoot makeup and you get your name in a magazine. Also, working on a good makeup counter in a well known store and building up your client and word of mouth is really important when it comes to my job, if you are good at your job, friendly and fun to work with you will be remembered and the stylist will use you again and again.

I have been working Freelance the last eight years, doing weddings, debs, some low profile fashion shoots. I seem to be on the road 24/7 all over the country. I have been thinking about setting up my own studio, lay down some roots etc. Can you give me any advice on what my next moves should be, am I mad even thinking about it? No, I don’t think you're mad! But be prepared to put in the hours. I have to say it’s great having your clients coming to you and not the other way around. It takes so much time travelling from one house to another doing a face here and there! If you are in a catchment area or town try and drop into the best salon in the area and enquire if they have room and set up in the salon, it is a great thing for them to offer their clientele and you will get new business from them. Have something to sell other then your makeup services get a good makeup line into the shop (mine is the best!) it's all well and good doing makeup for whatever you charge and then off they wander to BT’s or wherever, spending their money on products you recommended - if you have a good makeup line in your shop, the worth of which you have demonstrated with your artistry, then you get that cash! Women are always looking for convenience so if hair and makeup and nails and brows are under one roof they will come back time and time again.

If you have a question on your mind why not ask Ken yourself?

Diode of beauty W

ith many Irish salons opting for LED technology, what is it? Does it really work? Jennifer Rock aka the Skin Nerd takes a look‌

LED standing for Light emitting Diode, a technology first designed by NASA working on the premise that they send energy producing packets of light into the deeper layers of the skin. Ask not what NASA does for skin but, appreciate the fact it must be high grade technology! (They were studying how light may influence plant growth in space, then doctors researched how it may encourage dermal growth in our skin! Disclaimer; not plant growth!) LED are lights which are visible to the naked eye unlike UV, will not photosensitise the skin, deemed not carcinogenic, are painfree, calming and extremely beneficial to the skin. There are three lights, blue, red and amber. Each boasting their own merit. They can be offered as a standalone treatment or cocktailed as an added benefit to a facial etc. Basically, the skin has the ability to absorb light and then convert it into energy. This stimulates and causes a higher cell turnover rate, encourage lymphatic system amongst some of its benefits. Blue has the ability to kill bacteria, so essential in the reality of fighting acne conditions. The blue light is also credited with calming skin inflammation and irritation. It is an effective non-invasive means to treat a tender yet reactive skin. This skin condition has often been subjected to harsh exfoliants, astringents, medications, peels and mechanical pummelling devices, while this alternative involves no hands on touch per say yet still gets results. Red light when emitted onto the skin has the ability to stimulate the fibroblast cell. It is used as a booster for anti ageing benefits alongside scar tissue treatments. The red light has been reported to help in facial muscle relaxation, ideal for the frown line and naso labial line region we all dread! Finally the amber or yellow light treats reactive sensitive, red and vascular skins. This one may do well on our weather beaten island so! It helps to minimise the redness alongside the bumps blemishes and irritation that accompanies it. It targets environmentally induced irritation while inhibiting bacterial growth. Although the target zone for the light is the dermal layer, the living layer of the skin, all layers will benefit i.e. the 5 layers of the epidermis, so thorough skin rejuvenation shall take place. Some before and after pictures have visible differences in skins clarity, smoothness, texture and even open pores. www.salonmagazine.ie

There is a grey area however, as it is still relatively new science in the mainstream capacity as there are many conflicting opinions. Many claim there should be more clinical papers and scientific reports to support the claims being made. However the visuals, testimonials and results that regular clients attribute to this treatment tend to speak volumes. Indeed some clinical nursing clinics have LED rooms now as the lights also boost serotonin (happy hormones) levels ideal in the treatment of depression. This is also a must for us in the northern hemisphere, a nation prone to SAD (seasonal affective disorder) and clinically proven to be deficient in Vit D thanks to the lack of UVB rays! If our serotonin levels are peaked it may affect us positively mentally aswell as physically. Overall the lights seem to claim benefit on stretch marks, rosacea, hyper pigmentation and severe photodamage, the hardest coupling of skin conditions to treat. A course is usually advises one 6 treatments a week apart for optimum results. The treatment itself can take as little as 5 minutes – 30 minutes dependant on need and severity and also the size of the machine head. Some machines are hand held small devices, while others are body designed heads to cover a large area at one time. It is an enjoyable treatment to receive.

Poor Performa nce

Don’t write an employee off as being ‘lazy’ or ‘incompetent’, says Peninsula Business Services

So, you have an under-performing employee, there’s nothing more infuriating and confusing when you’re running a business. Some employees may genuinely be making an effort but are just not hitting the standard whereas others may be more than capable but seem disinterested in hitting their targets. These 10 tips should assist any employer in dealing with such issues. 1. Know what you want from the employee To be able to identify that an employee is underperforming, you should be fully aware of what you want from them. It is also necessary that the employee is aware of the required standards. 2. Informality When you are addressing a performance issue for the first time, it is advisable to approach it with informal measures. This does not mean that the issue goes unaddressed; it simply means that no formal sanctions will be given out at this stage. 3. Let the individual know that you have concerns The first practical step is to let the employee know that you have concerns over their performance. This should be done in a private conversation with the employee, but is not a formal hearing so there is no need to formally invite the employee with notice. 4. Identify the problem Enquiries should be made as to the reason for the underperformance. This is necessary to establish what subsequent action you need to take. If they have the capacity to perform better but simply choose not to, then they should be told that they must improve. If it is their ability to do the job (they are trying hard but still can’t perform well) that is the problem, then you should identify how you can help them e.g. further training/ supervision. If the reason is medical, it may be necessary to obtain expert medical opinion. If they have a disability, reasonable adjustments should be made to the role so that their disability is not a barrier to their performance. 5. Notify of the consequences Although you are dealing with the issue informally, you should let the employee know that, should they show no signs of improvement, you may need to begin a formal procedure with them.

6. Monitor properly Keep tabs on the employee’s subsequent performance. Make daily checks if that is appropriate, but it is best to do this during the monitoring period, rather than simply at the end, so interim measures can be taken if necessary. 7. Re-visit If the employee does not improve, or there is a temporary improvement followed by a dip, you must re-visit the issue. Speak to the employee again, pointing out that your previous discussion, and/or any help provided, does not appear to have had an effect. Again, ascertain what the reasons are. 8. Formal procedure If no sufficient improvement or explanation is provided, you should consider implementing a formal disciplinary or capability procedure with the employee. This can follow the same process as the informal procedure, however, formal hearings should be held where the employee is permitted to respond to the concerns you have. Employees should be formally invited to these hearings, allowed the right to be accompanied, and formal sanctions e.g. warnings, may be given where appropriate. 9. Efficiency is key In more general terms, you should deal with the process efficiently – do not allow the issue to drag on. Where you set timescales, stick to them. 10. Consistency Act in accordance with previous cases of a similar nature to ensure a consistent approach in terms of assistance provided, where appropriate, and sanctions given. In addition to these tips, you need to remember to communicate clearly with each employee. Ensure the employee is clear on the objectives they have been set and on the consequences of their actions. For any further information on this matter, please call the Peninsula Advice Service on 1890252 923. www.salonmagazine.ie

Stay a head

The rut

The Salon View by Alex!

Liz McKeon looks at how to change a pattern or behaviour that has become dull and unproductive but is hard to change.

Education, knowledge and the offering of something specialised to your clientele will help you stand out from the competition!

‘I’m overwhelmed, I don’t have enough time, nothing works, I don’t have enough money…’ When you feel stuck in a rut, be it financial, creative or business, understand it is called a rut, because you’ve created a groove with your thoughts whose walls you begin to feel trapped in.

A school diploma is only an introduction, the beginning of the road for a beauty therapist. Knowledge of the market is a must for everyone beginning to work in this sector or currently working within this amazing industry. As we regularly move between different job roles within the salon it is even more important that we know our job role, its function and the advancements in treatments in order to offer premier services to our clients. As a professional, we need to stay on-top of industry innovation and new treatment developments. Reading your trade or professional magazine will give you an insight into what is happening for your industry, what new products, treatments and equipment is being introduced. This will give you advanced knowledge of education and training needed to gain competency with these new industry advancements.

Standing out from the crowd!

We as salons focus on versatility, offering a wide range of treatments to our clients. Having as much knowledge of our market is paramount to establishing us as leaders. Having a specialist treatment to offer our clients will also enable us to “stand out from the crowd” - so, for example if you introduce a specialised field of cosmetology into your salon business you attract a new form of clientele. You should look to introduce new treatments into your salon business to help attract new clientele include: permanent makeup and medical pigmentation, trichology, podiatry, broadly defined ecology and natural cosmetics. In my experience, the clients who decide to visit a salon offering specialised treatments within their professionally run salon will surely be satisfied – they will come back and recommend you to others. Stay focused, stay ahead!

Alex

Meanwhile, freedom, happiness and infinite possibility live outside these self-created walls, and acting like a happy successful professional is one of the most powerful ways to blast yourself out this rut. Learn to question your negative self talk before getting stuck in the RUT, and you will probably find no substance to your worrying self doubt.

Learn to Take Risks

Your desires are what make you uniquely who you are: they are part and parcel of you. Take risks when you get a tiny whisper of intuition to do something scary, run straight towards it before excuses start seeping in. Be prepared to risk failure, looking stupid, losing money, getting rejected. Do whatever it takes to follow your heart, because there was a big reasonyou came into this industry in the first place and sometimes we get so caught up in our day to day activities that we lose sight of our big goals. The more authentically you live your life, the happier and more successful you will be.

SALON TANNING| 49

Why no means NO! A recent study in Ireland disappointingly found a small increase in the number of under-18s using sunbeds, even though this has been banned since 2014! To be fair, there was no information to determine whether this was being allowed in salons or was from home use of sunbeds – so I’d very much like to think it was the latter! However, it really is very important you have the correct salon protocols in place to ensure no-one under 18 is allowed to use a sunbed and that staff have the confidence not only to say ‘no!’ but are also equipped with the knowledge to communicate why this restriction is in place.

Contact: Joe McGlinchey directly at: 0044 7553 383455

rather than letting them seek sunbed tanning somewhere less scrupulous! This way you can retain them as a client and offer correct advice for UV tanning when they are age appropriate.

0 -18

The Sunbed Association recommends salons employ a Challenge 21 or Challenge 25 policy as we all know many teenagers can and do look much older than their years and members of the TSA can access posters to highlight this policy as well as advice on protocols to confidently manage under-age clients. The obvious solution is to direct anyone under-18 to sunless tanning if your salon offers this option,

Revolutionary Ecuri Stem Cel l Treatment for B rows Launched by Brow Specialists – International Beauty Board

International Beauty Board, an Irish company dedicated to educating and training Ireland’s beauty professionals on brow treatments is launching a pioneering new brow treatment called Ecuri Stem Cell Treatment for Brows. This new and very effective treatment combines “stem cell” and brow pigmentation technology which activates hair growth making brows fuller, darker and thicker. Ecuri Stem Cell Treatment simultaneously applies the stem cells between the existing brow hairs using a special needle attached to a micro-pigmentation device. Together these two techniques give the appearance of real hair resulting in thicker, healthier-looking eyebrows. From micropigmentation to micro blading, brow treatments have become big business. Moving from a trend to a boom, power brows are dominating the facial hair landscape and are for most woman the minimal toe dipping in the extreme beauty world. Eyebrows have a new visibility playing a huge part in every selfie, making them the beauty story of the decade. However not all of us are blessed with beautiful God-given brows and over plucking, dieting, hormones and even vitamin deficiency are all factors which can impact on the texture and thickness of our brows.

Brows Look Better With Real Hair:

This new Ecuri stem cell technique promotes natural hair growth, leaving you with beautiful, natural-looking brows.

Many women lose a lot of eyebrow hair as they age. The ends of the eyebrows especially start thinning. While micropigmentation alone can create a fuller look, the results are significantly enhanced as soon as hair-growth starts in the thinning areas. For best results between 2 and 4 treatments are required.

Ecuri Can Work Where There Is No Hair Growth:

Even when there is no hair growth or even hair follicles there are still stem cells left in every hair shaft. The micro fine needle attached to the micropigmentation device is used to insert stem cell preparations into the into the hair shaft. This process regenerates brow hair in its natural form by using a combination of stem cell technology and micropigmentation techniques Developed by Ecuri scientists in the Netherlands, the treatment activates the body’s existing stem cells, therefore encouraging hair growth in the brow area resulting in fuller and thicker brows.
