SECOND SPA LIFE IRELAND CONFERENCE TAKES PLACE The second Spa Life Ireland Convention took place in June at the Johnstown Estate Hotel & Spa in Co Meath. More than 120 delegates from 31 spas and 20 suppliers gathered for the event, which offers attendees a unique blend of one-to-one meetings in a speed-dating style, combined with high-level educational seminars, a gala dinner and networking opportunities.

Fred Hoffman spoke effusively on how to manage multiple generations, from baby boomers to Generation Z, in the workplace and The Spa Whisperer Nigel Franklyn took part

SPASPA IRERLAND IRELAND 2018

This year’s speakers included the keynote Dr Franz Linser, who gave delegates his unique insight into next-generation wellness. “We can’t just keep putting creams on people’s skin and expecting it to solve everything, we’ll become more and more irrelevant every day,” he told them. “The spa market needs a holistic approach and a more complex offer that includes mental and social aspects. It’s time to offer more than just momentary wellness, a way to habitual wellness for the body, the soul and the self.”

in a panel session with Spa Business School founder Michelle Hammond on developing your spa ‘dream team’. “Spa is more than just beauty,” he said. “We can offer something with so much more depth; we can transform people on physical and spiritual level. We make revenue out of emotional experiences so only when we hire passionate, emotional, effective not efficient people and leave the business of therapy to them can we really succeed.” Spa Life Ireland 2018 was brought to a close by Sharron Lowe, who managed to give delegates her unique mind makeover in just 45 minutes. “It’s great to see such enthusiasm from the Irish spa and salon sector for this type of event,” said Spa Life director Andrew Hammond. “We’ve seen some good growth in all areas compared with last year and we’re already planning for 2019 so we hope we can attract even more senior spa and hospitality professionals to join us.”

CELEBRITY ARCHITECT HUGH WALLACE UNVEILS NEW SPA AT KILDARE’S OSPREY HOTEL

SPA IRELAND 2018

Celebrity architect and star of RTE’s The Great House Revival and Home of the Year Hugh Wallace has unveiled a new €1.2m spa at The Osprey Hotel, Naas, Co Kildare. The spa is the latest addition to the complete Osprey Complex. Last year the hotel opened a new restaurant, which was also designed by Douglas Wallace Architects. Sligo-based Voya has been chosen as the flagship product for the spa. “We wanted the spa to feel like a real retreat but didn’t want it to feel forced or contrived, so we took our inspiration from the natural Irish landscape and used the colours and textures that are readily seen in nature and in Ireland,” said Wallace. “For example, the curved feature wall which snakes its way through the heart of the spa is made with beautiful Irish oak, the wallpapers have been inspired by the weave seen in Irish linen and even the light fittings are reminiscent of delicate, traditional Irish wicker baskets. It was important for our client, the PREM Group, who own The Osprey, to make the spa feel inherently Irish, not in a twee way, but to create a contemporary Irish spa that

will really ‘wow’ even the most discerning spa aficionado.” Stretching over 10,000 sq ft, the spa is set over three floors with the thermal suite, offering a range of heating experiences including double and single seaweed baths, a dry floatation bed, Rasul Chamber, heated, mosaic, free standing stone loungers and a Salt Grotto. Meanwhile, two distinctly different relaxation rooms, The Light Relaxation Room and The Dark Relaxation Room, will offer guests a space in which to relax either pre- or post-treatment. The spa's second floor has six treatment rooms, while the private couple’s suite on the third floor is filled with natural light, courtesy of a large glazed atrium.

Monart Spa in Co Wexford is to launch a sister venue in the UK in partnership with Duchy of Cornwall, a private estate under the control of the Prince of Wales. The two have reportedly formed a partnership called Poundbury Spa with Dorset-based building firm CG Fry, which is developing a new town known as Poundbury on a 400-acre site owned by Duchy beside Dorchester.

SHANDON HOTEL AND SPA IN DONEGAL ANNOUNCES EXPANSION The Shandon Hotel & Spa in Co Donegal has announced 40 new jobs in a €2m expansion, just two years after reopening. The hotel was closed down during the recession. New owners stepped in to reopen the four-star hotel and spa in 2016 and have since expanded the property to 68 rooms. Now 40 new positions are being

created across the hotel including at the spa and a new hairdressing salon. “I believe this is going to be Donegal's best year for tourism and it is hugely significant for rural parts of the county like here at Marble Hill and what that does for the local economy,” said manager Carolynne Harrison.

A flagship venue named the Royal Pavilion will include 20 luxury apartments and an adjoining spa. Monart has established a new firm for the UK venture called Monart International, which a filing at the Companies Office states is receiving a loan from the existing Monart business to enable it to develop and operate a deluxe destination spa facility in the UK.

IN THE LINE OF DEFENCE Daily Defence Shield SPF 30 is a perfect base for make-up, with broad protection against environmental factors including UV rays, high energy visible light and pollution. We already know that stress is a silent ager, and so is sun damage. Now there is evidence to suggest that blue light from all the screens we’re exposed to on a daily basis may cause long-term ageing (a style thing!) as well. It’s not enough to protect our skin from UVA/UVB rays. The average person looks at their phone 157 times per day. This product offers broad protection against high energy visible light, the sort of harmful blue light emitted from the technology we so love. www.elemis.com

FLAWLESS SKIN DARE TO BARE ALL! When skin becomes dehydrated, it lacks softness, glow and suppleness. Insufficient moisture also ages skin. Guinot’s Hydrazone Corps provides protection and a heightened feeling of pleasure. It compensates the effects of tensio-activators, while intensely moisturising skin and softening it after a shower or bath. As light as a lotion and as effective as a cream, Hydrazone Corps provides daily comfort and well-being and leaves skin lightly perfumed and velvety.

hen it comes to the interior of your salon, you will want to get the most out of the space you have while also taking into account the needs of both your clients and staff. It’s important to constantly monitor the look and feel of your salon and to keep the decor updated and fresh. First impressions are of course always key, whether you are trying to impress a new or returning customer. You only get one chance to make that first impression, so make it count. This doesn’t have to cost the earth but a certain amount of investment is necessary so that you make a return on it. For exam-

ple, a stylish reception desk near the entrance that’s tidy and free from clutter will make a professional and helpful impact immediately.

If you have a colour scheme or theme make sure it’s consistent throughout the salon and use mirror and lighting to show off your space to a maximum. SOTHYS SUCCESS

W

ow what a great few days we had! Chleo Enterprises were very proud to be a platinum sponsor presenting the Sothys brand at Spa Life 2018. It all kicked off on Sunday, 17 July with the SPA-RTY, a casual get-together in the beautiful spa at the Johnstown House Hotel where spa managers/directors and distributers enjoyed a few glasses of wine and some tasty nibbles! On Monday we had the opportunity to present Sothys to some of the most beautiful spas in Ireland using a ‘speed-dating’ process. It was great to meet with the key decision-makers face to face in such a professional and well organised environment. 2018 is absolutely the year for Sothys. It is new to the spa market in Ireland but it is present in some of the biggest spas and chains all over the world, so we have the experience. We received amazing feedback from the conference, not only from the directors of Spa Life who thanked us for presenting Sothys to such a high standard but from some of the best known spas in Ireland. It appears the market is crying out for something new, something luxurious and ultimately something 100% professional. Sothys is exclusive to beauty

salons and spas, you will never find it in a department store or pharmacy. We were really excited to launch the new award-winning Sothys Athletics line at Spa Life. It was developed to meet the skin’s needs before and after any exercise. Sothys chose tennis player Caroline Garcia, ranked No 1 in France and No 7 in the world, as brand ambassador.

‘It appears the market is crying out for something new, something luxurious and ultimately something 100% professional’ This innovative line consists of two treatments and two retail products targeted to men and women, whether you are an amateur or an experienced athlete it will ensure your body stays well balanced while conditioning the muscles and toning the skin. This line is a wonderful way to increase your client base and will offer a new

dimension to your treatment menu. It is ideal for a hotel or spa and can be used to link the leisure facilities, for example gym, golf, cycling etc, to the spa. It is also ideal for a beauty salon looking for new clients by forming for partnerships with local gyms, golf clubs etc. Overall the response has been amazing with appointments already in the diary to discuss Sothys in more detail. I can only say we were very proud to be involved in such an event and very proud to work with such a professional and unique brand.

SPA ESSENTIALS

Yes, there’s still space for the spa in the skincare industry, according to our resident Skin Nerd Jennifer Rock.

T

he whole world is pivoting towards becoming results-driven. Ingredients and techniques that used to be reserved for salons, clinics and cosmeceutical skincare brands are now readily available to all. You can get glycolic acid peels from your pharmacy, you can do your own EMS and the rise in people looking for serious skin treatments like micro-needling is astonishing. Does being results-driven mean that we should be leaving the spa-based treatments behind? In my opinion, definitely not. I am a big believer and regular receiver of both salon treatments geared towards change in the lower levels of the skin and spa treatments geared towards relaxation and skin soothing. Salon and clinical treatments work to stimulate collagen in the dermis, to raise the rate of skin cell proliferation, to bring about vasoconstriction to reduce redness and so on and so forth. All of these things improve our skin health, even if only temporarily, but they don’t work to improve our general health with regard to our skin. The skin is targeted by our bodies stress responses due to the brain-skin connection. It is widely believed that stress is a trigger for many inflammatory skin conditions such as

34

www.salonmagazine.ie

psoriasis, eczema and acne. Studies have shown that when humans are under duress, our skin’s barrier struggles to recover as quickly as it usually would and our wound healing becomes delayed. What does this mean? Well, without our barrier functioning at optimum level, we’re more susceptible to TEWL (transepidermal water loss) and airborne irritants. This is why those who are stressed may notice that their skin has dry patches or may see a general negative change in their skin. This is one place where the value in spa treatments lies for me: in their ability to relax, renew and reinvigorate. A spa treatment alone cannot tackle stress fully as it is not fixing the problems that are causing the stress, of course, but nonetheless, they are a valuable technique for destressing. YonKa facials are a personal favourite of mine, specifically the Excellence Code facial. It might be in the aromatic compress and its muscle-relaxing qualities, perhaps it’s in the mist with the Dr Lucas Championniere sprayer; regardless, it is fantastically soothing for both your skin and your soul. On top of that, it uses a lot of manual manipulation to reduce puffiness and tone the face. In my opinion, if you are to go to a

spa, you can’t leave without having a massage. We carry stress in our muscles so having a massage helps to relieve the physical manifestations of stress whilst giving a sensory experience too. The Lava Shell Full Body Massage is a massage carried out with heated lava shells being moved across the body by the therapist to bring down tension in the muscles. It is like being born again. Show me a person that has just had a Lava Shell Massage and is still feeling stressed and I’ll show you a liar. Another point to make is that spa treatments have had their game upped. Spa facials now include modalities such as tapotement and other forms of manual massage to provide different levels of treatment. Not only is your epidermis being soothed, nourished and hydrated, the treatment is aiding in the drainage of your lymphatic system and helping to tone your facial muscles. If you notice that your skin is worse when you are stressed, maybe it is time to invest a bit more in looking after all of you rather than the skin on its own. There is no harm in allocating some of your usual treatment budget to a spa facial or treatment and seeing how you and your skin feel afterwards.

THE AGES OF SKIN Your skincare routine should/needs to change depending on your age bracket, explains Lindsey Fenwick, education manager and skincare expert at Skinician.

Do you think people should change their skincare regime as they grow older? Yes, it’s extremely important that no matter what age we are we treat our skin in accordance to our skin conditions. However as we age there are some common changes that most of us will experience. The biological functions of the skin slow, causing increased wrinkle depth, dehydration, dullness and sensitivity.

PURIFYING TREATMENT Casmara’s Research Centre, drawing on the revolutionary drone technology and the pure microencapsulated oxygen, has formulated the Purifying Treatment range. It’s an exclusive purifying-oxygenating beauty plan that revolutionises facial skincare protocols with cosmetic drone technology and pure oxygen. Internally, it detoxifies the cells, oxygenates and energises them, prolonging their life and allowing them to function 100%. Suitable for all skin types including delicate, reactive and damaged skin. www.edenbeautygroup.com

What factors should a women in her 20s consider when choosing the right skincare products for her? I think of the 20s as the danger years! We have peak skin function so for most of us the skin in our 20s is as good as it gets. However this is also when most of the damage is done. I suggest a simple skin care routine that’s quick and easy. This means cleansing twice in the morning and twice in the evening, and toning and moisturising. Don’t forget your eyes as introducing an eye cream in your 20s will keep the eye’s looking bright and heathy.

What factors should a women in her 30s consider when choosing skincare products?

In my experience women in their 30s are the most time compressed so their skincare routine needs to be quick and made up of multifunctional products. I advise that they look for cleansing products with built in exfoliating benefits, that way they can cleanse and exfoliate in one easy step, the skin will look bright and fresh each and every day.

What factors should a women in her 40s consider when choosing skincare products? The skin is a record keeper and by your late 30s, early 40s the true signs of aging can be seen, I would advise building into your existing home care routine an exfoliator containing fruit acids and enzymes, this will melt away dry dull skin to reveal a smoother brighter more hydrated skin.

What factors should women who are in their 50s and above, consider when choosing skincare products? In your 50s your skin can begin to feel more fragile, you may experience increased dryness and feel the skin is beginning to slacken. The key is to look for products that will nourish, protect and repair. If you haven’t already, you need to introduce a rich night cream such as Skinician’s Advanced Restoring Night Cream, which contains regenacell to encourage the production of APT (aadenosine triphosphate).
