RISE IN NUMBER OF SMES BELIEVING BANKS ARE LENDING There is a significant increase in the numbers of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that believe banks are lending to business, according to the SME Credit Demand Survey published recently by the Department of Finance. More than 60pc of SMEs say banks are lending, up from 45pc in March 2017. Positive business sentiment has increased for companies of all sizes with 55pc of SMEs expecting the business climate to improve in the next six months, up from 49pc in March 2017. SME finances also continue to improve with 87pc of SMEs reporting stable or increased turnover. A total of 45pc of all businesses surveyed report increased turnover in the past six months, with 14pc reporting a decrease. Of those reporting increased turnover, half report an increase of 10pc or more. Some 57pc of SMEs believe that Brexit will have a negative effect on their business while 11pc believe that it will have a positive impact. Meanwhile, 32pc of SMEs believe it will have no impact on their business.“It is encouraging that there has been a noticeable increase in the number of respondents that feel that banks are increasing lending,” said Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe. “The survey has also captured that, notwithstanding the uncertainty of Brexit, Irish SMEs are more confident in the continued improvement of the business climate over the next six months.”

The fastest and easiest way to increase client loyalty is by improving the quality of the customer service that your salon delivers. When you take care of your clients very well, they tell others, and this will have a ripple effect. It’s then that you know you have delivered on the quality of the service. When you do this every time, with every client, you will see client loyalty, retention and referrals seriously escalate.

Two of these conclusions are death to your business. Obviously, dislike is bad, but so is the indifferent client because this is a temporary client. Once you make a great first impression on a new client, then you must do everything to ensure your client leaves feeling happy, looking forward to returning and happy to recommend you. Remember, outstanding customer service is the key to customer loyalty!

A new client will develop an impression about your employee, and your business, in their first seven seconds with your therapist. In that tiny slice of time, they will judge your employee in 11 different ways, all of which will affect how likely it is that they will do business with you again. The 11 ways (in no particular order) are: cleanliness, courtesy, credibility, confidence, friendliness, helpfulness, knowledge, professionalism, attractiveness, understanding and responsiveness. The outcome of these judgements is important - clients will roll these judgements into one opinion of your business, which will determine how likely they are to become a repeat client. The decision they make is one of the following three conclusions: they like your employee – and therefore your salon; they dislike your employee – and therefore your salon; or they are indifferent.

he Wicklow Street Clinic is primarily a skin clinic as opposed to a Dublin day spa. With consistent five-star reviews, the clinic has amassed a cult following in Dublin due to its excellent team of professionals as well as its sought-after Eminence facials. What do you love most about what you do?

How did you start out in the beauty industry?

Seeing a happy customer who is wowed by his or her treatment afterwards. I’ve seen some women come in and they’re visibly transformed with treatments like CACI synergy (the non-surgical face-lifting treatment), a course of skin-correcting anti-ageing facials like Eminence’s peel range, which can hugely impact problem skin, q-Fraq lasering and microneedling.

I am a qualified accountant. I grew up in Lithuania and moved to Ireland over 17 years ago. I started out working as a chambermaid in Galway, which was good honest work but I was a little isolated and really wanted to work in Dublin. I remember reading a quote that said ‘her success is not proof that you’re failing, it’s proof that it’s possible’. That inspired me at the time and I have always thought that it’s a good quote to remember. I took the chance and moved to Dublin and then got a job in a beauty salon on Wicklow Street. I worked my way up to become manager and when the owner retired I acquired the business, which is now The Wicklow Street Clinic!

What do find most rewarding?

ADARE MANOR SCOOPS INTERNATIONAL AWARD The five-star Adare Manor and Golf Resort in Co Limerick has been named Hotel of the Year 2018 at the Virtuoso Best of the Best Awards in Las Vegas. Virtuoso is a network of highend travel agencies with in excess of 17,500 advisors worldwide and a portfolio of almost 1,700 partners, including luxury hotels all over the world. Adare Manor has the only La Mer Spa in the British Isles, and a relaxation area with a terrace overlooking the river. The Irish hotel, which re-opened last November after a 21-month restoration, refurbishment and expansion project, beat four other properties to the title. It has 104 bedrooms, 42 of which are in a new wing, linked to the original building by a colonnade.

INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION ANNOUNCES NEW INITIATIVES Spa Life International has announced two new initiatives for its UK convention 2018; the return of the CEO summit and the introduction of additional supplier showcase presentations. As the name suggests, the CEO summit is an exclusive discussion forum, restricted to senior spa industry personnel in order to debate the key issues affecting the growth and development of the spa sector. Previous CEO summits have proven to be stimulating and enlightening so the organisers have decided to bring it back for 2018. The CEO summit is an invitation-only session and numbers are strictly limited. The supplier showcase presentations will take place on the second day of the Convention and will provide an opportunity for a wide range of suppliers to take to the stage to deliver a five-minute presentation to the entire audience. In additional to the face-to-face meetings with prospective buyers in the speed-dating forum and the opportunity for a dedicated display stand in the EXPO Arena, the supplier showcase will allow companies to achieve maximise exposure for their

brands and enjoy optimal return on their time at the convention. This exciting new commercial opportunity will be limited to suppliers who have already registered as official sponsors at the convention and will be offered on a first come, first served basis. BACK TO BASICS You should always remember the core pillars of what your spa actually is, writes interntationsal spa consultant Diahann Buckley.

A

s a spa consultant, I am often asked to revamp or revitalise a spa that has lost its lustre. Often clients see a new treatment trend or brand change as the solution to finding their market share. While brand

change and treatment evolution have merit, in most cases the solution is right there within their grasp. In a hectic world of spa trends and an explosion of new brands it is easy to run forward and completely forget the core pillars of what your spa actually is. The first step in is defining who/what you are as a spa. This may sound simple, however most spas today allow the brand to lead their identity. A brand is an essential part of your spa’s treatment offering, it is a layer but should not be the core. Define your spa essence, are you a destination spa? An urban retreat? Wellness spa or medical spa? Once you define this you can begin to build the story that you will translate through every aspect of the customer journey. This bespoke journey the guest will remember and will set you apart. Now you have defined your spa, build the story through the senses. The interior design and textural response will create the visual aspect and organically exude your story. Remembering lighting and all physical decoration will have a lasting impact. Tap into the sensory experience of touch, this includes all soft furnishing, wall finishes, and even your linens

When choosing your music be true the destination you are and momentum of your spa. This takes a little work, but it is certainly worth the effort. Aroma and essence are equally important.
