New Dublin Traffic Restriction affecting our businesses New Traffic restrictions along the Dublin Quays are leading to concerned small local businesses. With the Luas beginning its cross-city service in the coming months, Dublin City Council is attempting to ease traffic along the Quays by enforcing new rules. One of those is creating a 'no-go zone' for traffic, so that cars will no longer be able to turn right onto O'Connell Bridge from the North Quay. Businesses and workers have expressed their concerns over how this is going to affect their businesses. Watch this space... Growing Concern at Cost Increases

Retail Ireland, the Ibec group that represents the retail sector, has highlighted growing concern amongst retailers that the sector’s competitive position is being undermined as costs increase. In its latest Retail Monitor, the group identified particular concerns regarding Government controlled costs such as commercial rates, the minimum wage, and levies attached to utilities. Retail Ireland Director Thomas Burke said; “While retail sales values grew by 3.7% in the first half of 2017 compared to the same period in 2016, retailers remain cautious and uncertain about what the second half of the year will bring in terms of trading performance. With prices now below 2008 levels, retailers remain addicted to deep discounting as a means of driving footfall and additional spend. At the same time, we continue to see Government controlled input costs growing and retailers’ margins dwindling, threatening the very existence of certain high street brands. “Budget 2018 will offer Government an opportunity to address these spiralling costs and a chance to support retailers who find themselves under growing pressure. In this post-Brexit era, control of costs and a focus on our competitiveness will be essential to sustain the recovery in Irish retail, and avoid placing the sector at a major competitive disadvantage compared to counterparts in Northern Ireland or pure play online-only retailers based in the UK”, Mr Burke added.

A Quarter of Irish 9 out of 10 Irish people discontent Companies in their job Optimistic of Brexit Impacts Unemployment might be at its lowest rate in years, with more opportunities for work, but according to the Matrix Recruitment Survey 2017, the vast majority of people are not in their dream jobs.

According to a survey carried out by Dublin chamber of 359 companies, a quarter of those believe that Brexit will impact their business positively.

Here were some of the findings of the report. •

The number of those believe that Brexit will affect them negatively is down, only slightly, from 46 per cent from 50 per cent.

However, in the survey, when asked if business had been impacted on since the June Brexit vote, a third said it had been impacted negatively, with one in six saying it had been impacted positively.

Quoted in the Irish Independent, Mary Rose Burke, Dublin Chamber CEO said she was greatly encouraged to see Irish businesses looking further afield to other markets, in addition to seeking out additional markets at home in Ireland.

Two thirds would miss a wedding or funeral to land the perfect role. 24% of job candidates amended their social media status to secure their current job. 57% never heard back following an interview. 70% of workers in the survey said they believed that there was such a thing as a dream job. 12% reported that they had their dream job.

Beauty and Personal Care: Quarterly Statement Q3 2017 reported “negligible but positive” changes. I’m interested in doing a photoshoot of my work for my new website, but I am on a very tight budget. What guidelines should I follow when selecting a photographer?

I would like to gain more experience in the make-up sector. I studied some make-up during my beauty course, but would now like to pursue a professional make-up career. I am a full-time beauty therapist so a full-time make-up course is out of the question. Do you have any advice on changing careers? Should I discuss this with my boss too?

Thanks Sharon XXX Hi Sharon, Firstly, you should always go with a recommendation. In terms of choosing which photographer to go with if you have several recommendations, it’s important to gel with the photographer as you both need to be on the same page when it comes to your vision. Check out their previous work to ensure they’re suitable for your project. There are a lot of young, talented, up and coming photographers, who are building a portfolio and can create amazing work on a budget. Remember that, even though you pay to have the photographs taken, it does not mean you own the rights. Discuss this from the outset. When the photoshoot is complete, if the results are great, send them to magazines, and local papers. Some may be interested in using them. They can also be used for social media and advertising your business; the photographer may want to be credited for these, so check with her/him before publishing.

Moving on up Linda Ennis, Business Mentor & Director of Beauty Academy Drogheda talks about moving into management. You finally got your big break and are moving up on the career ladder. So how do you approach this new position? Beauty Academy has this advice to give. 1. Prepare Do a SWOT analysis, listing the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats to your business. Request insight from existing team members, gaining sometimes invaluable ideas while making everyone feel part of the team. 2. Making the Decision Decide on what direction you want the business to take, and how you think you can achieve it. Be clear on what it is that you expect from your team in terms of commitment, delivery of services, sales targets and attitudes. 3. Delegation Pin point the tasks that are required for the smooth running of the organisation. Allocate responsibility for each of these to each staff member, while attempting to allocate these evenly and fairly. 4. Marketing & Advertising Planning is essential in order to achieve a successful marketing campaign. Make an annual plan pin pointing dates such as Mothers’ Day, Christmas, local debs etc. Focus your special offers and your marketing plan around these events to keep the salon on-theme. Ensure the team are aware of the plan so they can also focus on upcoming events.

5. Sales Start by looking at the last few years’ turnover, and decide where improvements need to be made. Decide on a monthly, then weekly target and distribute them to the team. Make sure you give your staff monthly feedback, outlining performance for that month. 6. Costs Take a look at the overall costs of the business. Are there any areas in which you could save some money, such as electricity, telephone or other expenses? 7. Teamwork Maintain monthly team meetings to ensure good communication, to encourage motivation and to ensure all staff are up to speed with any salon news, future targets and plans and always encourage participation, feeback and the sharing of ideas with the team. 8. K-Beauty places an emphasis on order. It’s not what you do, it’s the way that you do it and that’s what gets results - this is definitely true when you’re applying products. Korean Beauty is famed for its multi-step skincare routines, but there’s more to it than just slapping it on and hoping for the best. The Koreans know that to ensure the proper penetration of each product, you must apply them from lightest consistency to heaviest consistency. The most beneficial concept in Korean skincare is that it does away with ready-to-go skincare routines. Korean

skincare rejects the single brand regime. A skincare routine should be created for the individual and centred on the specific problems that each person deals with in regard to their skin, no matter how satisfying it is to have a pretty row of identikit packaging in one’s bathroom! Even though Korean skincare is a trend in the direct sense of what a trend is (ie. incredibly popular in a fairly short space of time), I personally hope that it is here to stay, as the concepts that it transports over to us in Europe are effective and timeless. If you haven’t already, I’d recommend incorporating a sheet mask or two, an essence and a spritz into your weekly routine!

Communicate well and inform your team about what is going on in your salon. Encourage feedback and ensure you are making yourself accessible to staff.

2. Build Positive Relationships

Get to know the members of your team individually in order to build rapport among the group.

3. Acknowledge Good Work

Encourage creativity and ensure that everyone is clear about what is expected of them. By providing staff with positive feedback, it will help to build their confidence and encourage them to get more involved in the company vision.

4. Be Real and Set a Good Example

Showing your human side and allowing your staff to get to know you a bit better will allow them to feel more relaxed and comfortable approaching you. Your staff look to you for guidance and inspiration, so set a good example in order to gain respect and behave professionally.

5. Be Decisive

A good team leader needs to be able to assert their authority and make important decisions for the team. There is no space for flakiness in a leadership role, so always go with what you feel is best for the business.

6. Manage Conflict

When there is conflict in the workplace, it must not be ignored. Turning a blind eye can lead to a negative atmosphere, which could have implications for staff productivity and communication within the team. When an issue arises – deal with it.

7. Delegate

People perform better and are more engaged in roles where they feel they are using their best skills, so learn to delegate suitable roles that suit each individual.
